FROM THE DIRECTORThank you very much for coming to Tuesdays with Morrie. As you will soon hear Mitch say, it is a play with a profound subject – TheMeaning of Life. Topics covered – love, work, aging, family, community, forgiveness and death.Kind of serious stuff, right?Don’t worry. Professor Morrie Schwartz is an experienced teacher. He willguide us through. You should also know that you are an important part of this journey, too. There’s a wise observation that the authors make in the notes to this play. They say: “Everyone who comes to Tuesdays with Morrie brings someexperience of death, illness, and loss.” We’ve tried to remember this aswe’ve prepared this work for you.Thank you for bringing your experiences. We look forward to sharing thoseof Morrie and Mitch. We’re all in this together. Let us ever remember. For PK and H and FR.L. Flint EsquerraSMP is proud to support the Golden West Chapter of theALS Association by donating a 1 from every ticket purchasedand one special performance’s take of Tuesdays with Morrie.

Dames at Sea to Sail into PlayhouseBy Fran SyversonIt’s 1930 and Ruby steps off the bus in New York City with both thenaiveté and starry-eyed dreams of Broadway stardom that many ayoung girl from “back home” has done. Will she find it? Will theleading lady not be able to go on? Will she go out there a dancerand come back a star? Will she find love along the way? This paean to the musicals of the 30’s was first performed in 1966and was the show that made Broadway legend, Bernadette Peters,a star. Dames at Sea is often played with a bit of a wink and as aparody of musicals of the period. Director Joshua Finkel, however, plans for it to be an evocation and not a send-up of the period. Hesays it is both a charming and hilariously funny story filled withcharacters that you’ll recognize from countless films of the time. Ithas had many revivals through the years and, in fact, was the 100thproduction here at SMP 25 years ago!Dames at Sea will have you tapping your toes right along with theactors. For tap they do, LOTS of tap dancing, in Dames at Sea,with choreography by Jeffrey Scott Parsons and music direction bySMP’s Associate Artist, Sean Paxton.Although he is directing at SMP for the first time, Josh brings withhim a career that spans from Broadway (where he starred oppositeChita Rivera in Kiss of the Spiderwoman) to Los Angeles. He is anacclaimed actor, director, choreographer, producer, and teacherand he has garnered numerous awards for his work. And this is a reunion for Josh and SMP Artistic Director ChristianLebano who were in Conservatory together at the University ofWisconsin-Milwaukee and are working together for the first time inmany years.Dames at Sea opens June 17 and plays through July 21 – ticketsare on sale now at SierraMadrePlayhouse.org or 626.355.4318.
