READING MATERIALRead About Moon PhasesPHASES OF THE MOON DEFINITIONThe portion of the moon that we can see from Earth on any given night is called the moon’sphase. As the moon orbits around the Earth, sunlight is reflected off the moon’s surface andthat light reaches us on Earth. The phase of the moon depends on where the moon is in itsorbit. It takes about one month for the moon to make a full orbit around the Earth, meaningthe phases of the moon repeat about once a month! To better understand what causes the phases of the moon .LET’S BREAK IT DOWN!The moon does not make its own light, it only reflects it.The moon does not produce any light onits own. The light we see coming fromthe moon is actually light reflected fromthe sun, kind of like a mirror. The sun is the strongest source of light inour solar system. Every moon and planetthat is visible in our solar system isreflecting light from the sun. Thereflected light enters our eyes and thatis what allows us to see.Page 1

The moon is smaller than the sun but appears the samesize because it’s closer.Even though the moon and sun appearto be the same size from Earth, the sun isactually 400 times bigger than themoon. They look the same size due to anoptical illusion. Objects that are close toyou appear larger. You can experiment at home to provethat. Hold a quarter in your hand onearm’s length away. Ask a friend to hold adinner plate on the other side of theroom. Have the person move closer or further until the plate is the same size as the quarter. The phases of the moon are caused by its orbit around theEarth. As the moon orbits the Earth, we can seea different amount of the moon is lit bythe sun from our perspective on Earth.Sometimes the moon is completely lit,and other times it is completely dark. The illuminated shape of the moon thatis visible from Earth is called a phase. When you cannot see the moon at all, this phase is called a new moon. Severaldays after a new moon, we see themoon as a thin sliver of light called the crescent moon. As the moon appears larger and larger, itbecomes a quarter moon and gibbous moon. A full moon is visible when the whole side of themoon facing Earth is completely illuminated by the sun. On a clear night, a full moon looks verybright.Page 2

The moon’s surface has markings we can see from Earth. The moon’s surface has markings on incalled rays that are visible from Earth.Rays spread out from a crater formedby the impact of an asteroid. Whenasteroids hit the moon, material fromthe moon was thrown in differentdirections, just like when Dr. Jeff used asling shot to launch a paint ball into theflour and cocoa powder.Another feature of the moon we can seeare "lunar maria." The world maria means “seas” in Latin. Early astronomers thought the big darkspots on the moon were actual seas of water. However, these dark areas on the surface of themoon are not made of water, they are actually caused by ancient volcanic eruptions.Page 3

Earth has only one mooncalled “the moon” but other plants like Jupiter have at least 69 moons!A system is a set of things that are connected. The earth, moon and sun are connectedbecause their orbits depend on each other. The earth orbits around the sun and themoon orbits around the earth. The first phase of the moon. In this phase, the moon is completely dark since we can’tsee the side that the sun is shining on.The second phase of the moon. In this phase, we can see sunlight reflecting off onlyabout one quarter of the moon’s surface that faces us.Page 4

In this phase, we can see sunlight reflecting off threeGibbous Moonquarters of the moon’s surface that faces us. It’s not a full moon yet, but it’s gettingthere.PHASES OF THE MOON DISCUSSION QUESTIONSWhat causes the moon to look like it is changing shape? As the moon orbits the earth, the sun always shines on half of it, but from Earth we may only see partof that illuminated surface. The phase we see depends on where the moon is in its orbit around theEarth.Where does the light of the moon come from? The moon is lit by the sun. It is important to remember that the moon does not make its own light, itonly reflects light from the sun. What makes the moon and sun look like they are the same size? The moon is smaller than the sun but it is also 400 times closer. That makes it seem like it is the samesize as the sun. What caused the surface of the moon to look the way it does?Asteroids smashing into the surface of the moon created some of the features we can see on themoon’s surface (craters). Volcanic activity in the past created other features like mountain rangesand dark areas called “mares.” Volcanic activity stopped a few billion years ago, but asteroidscontinue to hit the moon because there is very little atmosphere to stop them. What causes tides in Earth’s oceans? The pull of moon’s gravity affects the water of the oceans and causes tides.Page 5

Why do scientists think there might be life on the moons of other planets? Some moons of Jupiter and Saturn have chemicals that could provide energy for living things. Anatmosphere and liquids can be found on one of Saturn’s moons.Page 6

The third phase of the moon. In this phase, we can see sunlight reflecting off half of the moon’s surface that faces us. Gibbous Moon The fourth phase of the moon. In this phase, we can see sunlight reflecting off three quarters of the moon’s surface that faces us. It’s not a full moon yet, but it’s getting there.
