Registration allows us to better assist you withusing, maintaining or servicing your equipment, as well as tocontact you in case we have important safety informationconcerning this product. If you determine service is required, have your equipment model, serial number and original proofof purchase available and call your distributor for assistancewith obtaining a return material authorization (RMA).Odor controlWhen used with the optional Activated Carbon Filter (F397),the HEPA 500 can effectively remove many odors from anindoor air environment, including volatile organic compounds(VOCs), food odors, fumes from paint and paint thinners, sewer odors, and many others.ELECTRICAL SAFETYOther uses: The HEPA 500 can be used in a wide variety ofsituations, including abatement, dust control, fire damageremediation, jobsite ventilation, positive or negative air setupsfor contamination cleanup and cleanroom environments, andgeneral air scrubbing. Use in institutions, schools, hospitals, long term care facilities, construction and remodel job sites –anywhere that that professional grade air quality control isneeded to control indoor air quality and protect the health andsafety of workers and occupants. The HEPA 500 has two features designed to protect themachine and the operator from electrical hazards.1. Circuit Breaker. The On/Off switch incorporates a circuitbreaker to protect the machine from excessive electricalcurrent by automatically turning the unit off when more than 12amps run through the unit’s circuitry. If the circuit breaker trips, first reduce the number of units connected to the main unit via“daisy chain,” then press the On/Off switch to reset.IMPORTANT: Many of these applications can presentsignificant health risks and require professional training. Formore information about using the HEPA 500 for restoration andremediation projects, consult the IICRC at 360-693-5675 orvisit www.IICRC.org. You can also contact RestorationSciences Academy at 800-932-3030 for technical advice andinformation about Academy courses.2. GFCI. The HEPA 500 is also equipped with Ground FaultCircuit Interrupter (GFCI). The GFCI helps to protect the useragainst electric shock. If the system detects a ground fault, theGFCI will instantly interrupt the electric current. The GFCI willalso trip when a short circuit or an overload occurs.NOTICE: If the GFCI trips, unplug the unit, and look forpotential electrical hazards – standing water, worn or frayedcords – anything that would cause a surge of electrical current.Once you’ve addressed these problems, press the red “Reset”button and check for proper operation. To isolate the problem,it may be useful to relocate the unit and plug it into a differentoutlet. If the GFCI continues to trip after you’ve addressed anyobvious problems, please contact your Dri-Eaz distributor forassistance.NOTICE! Because federal, provincial and local laws andregulations have varying requirements for the application, testing and general use of equipment on asbestos abatementprojects, Dri-Eaz cannot warrant the use of any product wemanufacture for asbestos abatement. Contractors performingabatement work should evaluate tools, equipment andprocedures in light of their local regulatory requirements, andHEPA 500 APPLICATIONSWater DamageUse of the HEPA 500 within the affected area will reduceparticle levels during the restoration process. In a standardCategory 1 water damage situation, place the HEPA 500 inthe middle of the affected area. Category 2 and 3 waterdamage situations may require negative pressurecontainment and other precautions. Only professionals withthe appropriate training should use containmenttechniques.Fig. 3: HEPA FilterChange LightFig. 4: On/Off Switchand Circuit BreakerMold RemediationMost mold remediation projects require containment.Containment prevents the spread of mold spores and otherbioaerosols. comply with those requirements.Ducting optionsThe HEPA 500 has a standard ductable 12 in. inlet and aductable 8 in. outlet, suitable for use with rigid and layflatducting. See “Ducting Options,” p. 5, for descriptions of theducting types available from Dri-Eaz.WARNING: BREATHING HAZARDWhen using the HEPA 500 in a containment area, turn off all sources of power to open combustionappliances such as fireplaces, boilers, furnaces, water heaters and HVAC systems to avoid the riskof backdrafting deadly carbon monoxide fumes.Negative Pressure SetupThe HEPA 500 can be configured to set up a negativepressure containment area. Install the HEPA 500 outside thecontainment area to draw air out. Only professionals with theappropriate training should set up negative pressurecontainment areas.CONTROLS AND OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONSOptions for Storage and OperationThe HEPA 500 can be stacked up to two high for storage oroperation. The handle of one unit fits snugly into the bottom ofa second unit. The unit can also be operated on its back, withthe outlet facing upward.Variable Speed Control knobIncrease the fan speed by turning the knob (Fig. 1) clockwise.Fan speed can be adjusted between 250 and 500 CFM.Change LightThe change light (Fig. 3) illuminates when you need tochange the HEPA filter. For storage, HEPA 500s may be stacked horizontally orvertically. Secure the unit properly when transporting.Electrical OutletsYou can “daisy chain” or interconnect up to 3 HEPA 500s tocustomize your air filtration needs. The unit can conduct amaximum of 12 amps when it is turned off, and 9 amps whenit is turned on. That means you can plug other equipment intothe unit, but the amperage is limited.About the filtersThe HEPA 500 uses two types of disposable filters: prefiltersand a HEPA filter. The prefilter section can be fitted with one ortwo filters. These prefilters are designed to capture largerairborne particles and to control odors, depending on the filterselected. The HEPA section (Position 3), is fitted with a filterdesigned to capture 99.97% of smaller particles down to 0.3microns. See Fig. 7, Filter Positions, and “HEPA 500 FilterConfigurations,” p. 5, for details.Setup1. Unwrap the cord wrap completely2. Place the HEPA 500 upright (vertical with handle at the top)3. Plug in to a standard 115 volt outlet. Each HEPA 500 needs3 amps to operate.4. To switch the unit on, locate the control panel and turn thevariable speed switch clockwise (see Fig. 1 “Speed Control”above). Then select either a maximum (500 CFM) or down toa minimum (250 CFM) airflow rate. To maintain the optimal airchange rate, consult the IICRC S520 standards, 10.3.1.Filters should be replaced whenever they show visibleaccumulation of dust. For environments with a high volume ofaerosolized particles, we recommend the use of two prefiltersto extend the life of the HEPA filter.Always replace the HEPA filter promptly when the FilterChange Light illuminates.
