NEWS & VIEWSEditor’s NoteA New Year, A New Network& Hundreds Of New ShowsWELCOME, 2018! The new year always marks an opportunityto start afresh and, as the wise Oprah once remarked, it alsobrings “another chance for us to get it right.” Oprah’s wordscertainly ring true when it comes to theworld of TV programming. While 2017brought hundreds of new shows, some ofwhich were quite memorable (think TheGood Doctor, Young Sheldon, The Sinner)and some we wish we could forget (thinkEmerald City, APB, Kicking & Screaming),this year a fresh list of newbies is set to rollout. The networks waste no time, either —series premieres begin almost immediately.Inside, we highlight 13 new shows thatdeserve your attention, from TNT’s newpsychological thriller The Alienist to StevenSoderbergh’s interactive storytellingexperience Mosaic. Also new this year is a major network revamp. Spike —part of the Viacom family of networks that includes MTV, VH1,Nickelodeon, BET and TV Land — is smartly morphing intoParamount Network effective Jan. 18. Please note that yourdaily program listings have already been updated to reflect this.Paramount’s first original series is Waco (see page 15), which tellsthe tragic story of David Koresh, the cult leader of the BranchDavidian compound in Waco, Texas, and his followers. As always, on behalf of the staff, I wish you all a healthy, peaceful and happy 2018!Barb Oates, Editor in ChiefMeetTHE CREWBARBFirst on my list to DVR:Counterpart on StarzIn 2018, TV networksshould resolve to:Stop changing theirprogramming after theyissue a schedule.JEFFFirst on my list to DVR:Return of The X-Fileson FOXIn 2018, TV networksshould resolve to: Stoprebooting everything.LORIFirst on my list to DVR:Mosaic on HBO. Random Rants & RavesIf I Could Program ANetwork For A Day I’d air anything about UFOs, Area 51,shows like Ancient Aliens. I can’t getenough of these. Then my other favoriteis The Middle, as it reminds me so muchof my own family. I’d like more, muchmore, of The Middle and a lot less ofThe Golden Girls and Reba. — DavidI would put Game of Thrones on astandard network such as TNT. — JustinQUESTION OF THE MONTH:What is yourfavorite eventyou watch in theWinter Olympics?Email us at letters@ntvbmedia.comWhat Happened To “TenDays In The Valley”?I’m so annoyed with ABC. I wasfollowing the new Kyra Sedgwick dramathat had her searching for her missingdaughter Lake, and now it’s not onSundays anymore. What’s up with that?— MaryAfter four episodes, ABC pulled theseries from Sunday nights and replacedit with “Shark Tank.” The network took ashort break with airings before moving“Ten Days in the Valley” to Saturdaysin mid-December. A two-hour seasonfinale will air on Jan. 6, so you shouldget your answers on whether she’ll everget her daughter Lake back.Looking For More HorrorI just finished overdosing on all ofOctober’s scream-and-holler horrorfilms. Syfy, AMC and TCM all did verywell with a great variety. My favorite isthe original, very first The Exorcist, butit has to be uncut and unedited. Thenwhat really scares me are The TexasChain Saw Massacre (1974) andDeliverance (1972). Why? Because itcould really happen. Get this — when Iask people if they know character actorNed Beatty, they say no. I tell themhe was in Deliverance, and then theyknow. I really can’t get enough horrorand scary movies, so kudos to thosenetworks who did it for October.— Bruce“Halcyon” ConfusionWhy oh why would anyone cancel TheHalcyon? The storyline is so interesting, and the characters hold your attentionwith their interactions. Please forwardany comments, however many youget, to someone who may listen to usviewers. — MattieThe period drama following London’ssocialites was produced and originallyaired in the U.K. on ITV before Ovationpicked it up. Unfortunately, ITV did notrecommission the series for additionalseasons.Cover SuggestionsMy list for who I would like to see onthe cover of this magazine is: No. 1,Muhammad Ali, a great person — he hasappeared on the cover of all the leadingmagazines and on Sports Illustratedalmost more than anyone else [MichaelJordan is the only athlete who appearedmore]. No. 2, Donald Trump becausehe will make America great again. No. 3,Elvis Presley — he’s a handsome, kind, real person who loved America. No. 4,Sam Elliott because he is a great personand great actor. HYPESETH STEPS INTO HOST GLOBESThe Golden Globes has certainly found its comfort host in SNL alumni. Only sevenweeks prior to the Jan. 7 live event, NBC announced Seth Meyers will take onhosting duties for the 75th annual gala. Meyers takes over the reins from fellowNBC late-night host and former SNLer Jimmy Fallon (2017), who took over for TinaFey and Amy Poehler (2013, 2014, 2015). Unlike the Oscars, the Globes didn’t havea regular host until 2010 when Ricky Gervais captivated Hollywood’s best party forthree years standing, and then returned for his fourth and final gig (sohe swears) in 2016. 5QuestionsWith Brandi Rhodes Of“WAGS Atlanta.” By Scott FishmanAs a model, ring announcer and professional wrestler, Brandi Rhodes isused to cameras on her. However, having them follow along in daily lifewas a new experience for the former WWE beauty. The wife of Ring ofHonor star Cody Rhodes is among the cast of WAGS Atlanta, which airson E! Wednesdays beginning Jan. 3. Viewers will get a candid glimpse ofher married life and career. Here we get to know Rhodes a little better.12What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?I’m a nerd. I was a nerd in school growing up. I wasn’t popular. I wasn’tcool. I was really into my academics and books. I was an accomplishedfigure skater, so that took up a ton of my time. Because of the role I’ve playedon television, people think of me as the cool girl. I was not that at all.Where was your first date with Cody, and when did you knowhe was the one? The first date we had was in Biloxi, Miss. It’s Biloxi,so there wasn’t a whole lot to do. We hung out with Ted DiBiase Jr.part of the time because he had a place to hang out, a cigar club. Then weended up at Waffle House because, again, it’s Biloxi. There weren’t a lot ofplaces open past 10pm. On another date, he asked me, “Would you everwant to go with me to Halloween Horror Nights?” I am a horror junkie andhave been since I was 8 years old. My heart beat out of my chest at thatmoment. If he had proposed then, I would have said yes.3What was your biggest splurgeitem you got for yourself?Probably my current car, a MercedesGL350. I got that because before that Ihad purchased a Range Rover Evoque.I loved it for 15 minutes and realized Ishouldn’t have spent the money becauseit doesn’t have what I need.WAGS Atlanta: 2017 E! Entertainment Television LLC Credit: Tony Kelly4If you could invite threecelebrities alive or dead for adinner party, who would theybe? Oprah because Oprah kind of has herhands in everything. If I were to fall on hardtimes, I feel like Oprah would be a goodfriend to have. Ryan Seacrest because heis the man, and I would love to learn howhe went from being a cohost on a realityshow competition to owning everything inHollywood. I would have my father-in-lawDusty [Rhodes]. Dusty was always theguy you wanted to have over for dinner. He was so charming, so positive, and hewould have a good time with Oprah.5What’s a movie you can watchover and over and neverget tired of? 13NEWMUST-WATCHSHOWSThe1 AlienistTHRILLERDakota Fanning Hunts A Psycho Killer In TNT’s Period Thriller. By Ryan A. Berenz“In the 19th century, persons suffering from mental illnesswere thought to be alienated from their own true natures,”explains the introductory title sequence to TNT’s psychologicalmurder mystery series The Alienist. “Experts who studied themwere therefore known as alienists.”The Alienist is set in New York City in 1896 at the tailend of America’s Gilded Age, when the economic expansion, industrial advances and scientific achievements veiledwidespread corruption, organized crime and serious socialinequality. In a dark corner of this world, an immigrant boydressed in women’s clothing is found gruesomely murdered.Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), an alienist specializing inchild psychology, and New York Times illustrator John Moore(Luke Evans) are drawn into the case, uncovering evidenceand following leads that the corrupt police officials won’t.Kreizler and Moore enlist the help of Sara Howard(Dakota Fanning), secretary to then-police commissionerand future president Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Geraghty),to secretly circumvent the police. Sara’s the first womanemployed by the department, and many of her cohorts areopenly hostile.“Sara just wants to be able to do her job,” Fanning says.10Channel Guide Magazine“She wants to be able to help other people and be able to useher skills and her intelligence to be of service. She’s not reallythinking about being a pioneer.”What Sara is thinking about becomes a part of themystery. As the investigation progresses, more is revealedabout her own dark past. “She comes from a family of means, but she’s largely been on her own for most of her life and wasorphaned at a young age,” Fanning says.Sara’s somewhat cold and detached exterior belies hercomplex emotional core. “A big part of her character is thatshe doesn’t really let other people see her sweat,” Fanningsays. “She can’t show vulnerability because that in this timewould have been perceived as weakness. But there are a lot oftimes when we see her embrace her femininity. It’s importantto show female characters who are feminine and strong, because of course you can be both.”The Alienist will draw comparisons to a 19th-centuryTrue Detective (Cary Fukunaga executive produced bothseries). Based on early episodes, The Alienist looks like adeep dive into a complex world inhabited by characters whoconfront a disturbed psychopath and their own natures. The Alienist TNT Mondays beginning Jan. 22N
