panoramahorizonsStart here for films by established directors as well asacclaimed titles from the festival circuit including Canneswhere earlier this year such veterans as André Techiné(Golden Years), Philippe Garrel (Lover for a Day), JacquesDoillon (Rodin) all had new films alongside an earliergeneration such as Michel Hazanavicius having fun withJean-Luc Godard in Redoubtable, Carine Tardieu’s hitcomedy (Just to be Sure), François Ozon erotic thriller(The Double Lover), Laurent Cantet (on top form in TheWorkshop) and Emmanuelle Bercot (150 Milligrams)about a real life medical whistle-blower.There are two widely different takes on celebrated Frenchsingers. Barbara, Mathieu Amalric’s tribute to the “dame ennoir” in which the director himself plays a film director withhis ex-wife Jeanne Balibar as the grande dame is the edgierof the two. Lisa Azuelos’s more conventional glittery biopicDalida boasts an unknown Sveva Alviti in the title role. Amalricis also present on screen as another film-maker in Ismaël’sGhosts, his seventh collaboration with Arnaud Desplechinalongside Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and LouisGarrel (also to be seen as the great Godard in Redoubtable). To mark the 150th anniversary of Marie Curie’s birth MarieNoëlle offers a large-scale biography of the Nobel-Prize-winningphysicist starring Polish actress Karolina Gruszka (in a roleonce taken by Isabelle Huppert). Another historical subjectA Bag of Marbles draws for inspiration on the memoirs ofJoseph Joffo about two Jewish boys in Second World WarFrance. From today’s headlines This is Our Land by LucasBelvaux has as a background the rise of the forces of theNational Front while Pierre Jolivet’s The Firemen looks fromthe inside at the summer conflagrations along the Côte d’Azur. For sheer unadulterated delight try Lost in Paris by and withDominique Abel and Fiona Gordon adrift in the City of Light, the wacky shenanigans of Problemos by comedian EricJudor or the versatile Noemie Lvovsky with Tomorrow andThereafter dedicated to her mother. No Panorama selectionwould be complete without a major literary adaptation whichcomes in the form of A Woman’s Life, an adaptation byStephane Brizé of Guy de Maupassant’s first novel.150 MILLIGRAMS12A BAG OF MARBLES12BARBARA13CORNICHE KENNEDY13DALIDA14THE DOUBLE LOVER14FéLICITé15THE FIREMEN15FOREIGN BODY16GOLDEN YEARS16ISMAëL'S GHOSTS17JUST TO BE SURE17A KID18LOST IN PARIS18LOVER FOR A DAY19MARIE CURIE, THE COURAGEOF KNOWLEDGE19PROBLEMOS21REDOUBTABLE21RODIN22SCHOOL OF LIFE22THIS IS OUR LAND23TOMORROW AND THEREAFTER23A WOMAN’S LIFE24THE WORKSHOP24FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL UK 2017 1 1

Seeking solid proofto justify her suspicions, she joins forces with thehospital’s head of research Antoine, played by BenoîtMagimel. What follows is a long and rough road strewnwith shady coverups, impenetrable institutionalframeworks and powerful figures who are either corruptor simply have their heads buried deep in the sand.Irène's determination in pursuing the cause catapultsher into the spotlight. By challenging one unscrupulouscompany, she shakes the foundations of a system thathas become inexcusably complacent.Cast Sidse Babett Knudsen, Benoît Magimel, Charlotte Laemmel, Isabelle DeHertogh, Lara Blazi Neumann, Philippe Uchan, Patrick Ligardes, Olivier Pasquier,Gustave Kervern, Pablo Pauly, Eddie Chignara, Raphaël FerretBased on the famous and acclaimed memoirs ofJoseph Joffo, A Bag of Marbles offers a new versionof his incredible story following the experiences of twoyoung Jewish boys living in France during the SecondWorld War. panorama horizonsBarbara (N/C 15 )A loving tribute to the icon of French song with abrilliant performance by Jeanne Balibar who hasan uncanny physical resemblance to the late“Dame en noir” as the legend used to be called byher admirers. Mathieu Amalric (who won best directorat Cannes for On Tour) directs Balibar, his ex-wife,in a film within a film. Balibar plays an actress calledBrigitte who is cast to star in a film about Barbarawith Amalric playing a director called Yves. At timesit is deliberately difficult to know what is real andwhat is recreation as Amalric edits in material fromdocumentaries but there’s no doubt about the powerof Balibar’s performance.Cast Mathieu Amalric, Jeanne Balibar, Erwan RibardDirector Mathieu Amalric I 2017 I France I 97 mins I Int sales GaumontJeanne Balibar is cast in the double role of thecelebrated singer and an actor playing her in ahaunting performance. panorama horizonsDalida (N/C 12 )In the tradition of French chanson a singer’s abilityto sell the audience on the emotions of the song iseverything. Few did this better than Dalida. Overthe course of 30 years beginning in the 1950s, thisEgypt-born Italian became a French idol with aguileless voice and sensual stage persona, selling170 million records worldwide. But all that professionalbliss came packaged with a fair amount of privatetorture. This glittery biopic faithfully chronicles thecomplexities of being a liberated woman in a lessliberated era, as well as the ferocious passions of alife in which, despite all the triumphs, suicide becamea recurring theme. Writer/director Lisa Azuelos madea bold decision to go with the unknown Sveva Alvitiin the title role who incarnates the legend with styleand confidence.Cast Sveva Alviti, Riccardo Scamarcio, Jean-Paul Rouve, Nicolas Duvauchelle,Alessandro Borghi, Patrick Timsit, Vincent Perez, Valentina Carli, Brenno Placido,Niels Schneider, Vittorio Hamarz Vasfi, Davide Lorino, Haydee BorelliThe Double LoverL’Amant double (N/C 18 )Francois Ozon’s erotic thriller, about a woman Chloé(Marion Vacth from Young and Beautiful) who falls inlove with Paul, her psychoanalyst (Jérémie Renier)but discovers there’s more to him than meets the eye, sees the director back to his old tricks after therestrained Second World War saga Franz.
