Course Description:Beginning Spanish I is an elementary course designed for students with little knowledge or no prior studyof the Spanish language. The course is proficiency oriented and its primary objective is the development,at an upper beginner level, of listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing.Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to understand and use familiar everydayexpressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type; greet andintroduce him/herself and others, share biographical information, make simple descriptions, express likeand dislikes, talk about present and near future plans, and discuss daily routine activities; handle mostbasic language survival situations; interact in a simple way when the other person talks slowly andclearly; read short texts for pleasure and meaning; and use simple grammatical structures incommunicative situations and write sentences and short paragraphs.III. Demonstrate knowledge of basic vocabulary by conducting an oral presentation of a posterincluding a collage of labeled magazine cutouts of words related to classroom objects,clothing, colors, numbers 1-100, names of people, places and common objects, activities, andthe weather.Participate in situational games and communicative activities using familiar everydayexpressions and very basic phrases and applying one’s growing knowledge of Spanishgrammatical structures and basic vocabulary.Incorporate one’s knowledge of basic grammar, vocabulary, and descriptive patterns tocreate simple paragraphs about different class topics and to create a biography.Read and answer a series of reading comprehension activities to demonstrate readingcomprehension skills and a growing pleasure for reading texts in a foreign language.Respond the lab manual and workbook activities to demonstrate a growing knowledge ofthe topics proposed in class.Demonstrate a growing knowledge of the language by completing with 80% Level 1 ofRosetta Stone software.Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of technological resources by communicatingwith instructor and peers via email, using word processor to produce quality writtendocuments, using PP to produce a quality presentation, using search engines to locate classinformation and a CP player/drive to access the information of the lab manual.Professionalism OutcomesThe following “Professionalism Outcomes” are infused throughout the course.
