Valtek XL Series PositionerAdvantagesI/P or P/P Signal ConvertibleShock and Vibration ResistantField conversion from one control signal to another is easilyaccomplished by replacing one module with the other, greatly reducingspare parts inventory.XL positioners are designed with a high natural frequency coupled withpneumatic damping – unaffected by vibrations with acceleration up to 2g’s and frequencies to 500 Hz.For Single or Double-actingActuatorsUsable with either single or double-acting actuators (both linear androtary) makes the XL Series positioner versatile.Easily Field ReversedAction can be reversed in the field by simply turning the cam over, reversing anti-backlash spring and changing output tubing.Easy Calibration ProceduresCalibration is easy due to minimal interaction between zero and span.Other positioner adjustments are enclosed for protection to discouragetampering.Split-Range ServiceStandard signal ranges are 4 - 20 mA for the electro-pneumatic (I/P)model and 3 - 15 psi for the pneumatic (P/P) model. Optional range is10 - 50 mA. All models can be calibrated for a 2- or 3-way split rangewithout additional parts. The XL positioner’s simplicity, modular design and few parts, makemaintenance quick and easy.Simplified MaintenanceNo Regulator* RequiredThe XL positioner with the NT 3000 I/P or the pneumatic module isdesigned to withstand 150 psi at all ports and is relatively insensitive tosupply pressure fluctuation.Changeable Flow CharacteristicsEasily changed cam provides flow characterization.Insensitive to Mounting PositionPositioner can be mounted in any orientation without affectingperformance.Corrosion Resistant Partsfor Long LifeCover and base assembly are epoxy powder painted and continuouslypurged from the inside with instrument air. Internal working parts areconstructed from 300 series stainless steel, anodized aluminum or Buna-N.Low Air ConsumptionSteady state air consumption is .28 SCFM / .48 m3/hr @ 60 psi / 4.1 barsupply maximum (.34 SCFM / .58 m3/hr with I/P module).Extended Temperature ModelI/P: -40 F to 185 F / -40 C to 85 C; P/P: -50 F to 250 F /-46 C to 121 COxygen Service ModelPneumatic models are available with fluorosilicone diaphragms andO-rings.With the NT 3000 I/P TransducerReplaceable Coalescing Filter*Removes particles that may clog transducer. Large orifice / air passagesprovide additional protection against clogging. Positioner includesorifice screen to prevent clogging.Minimum Pressure CutoffWhen enabled, causes the NT 3000 transducer output to decrease tonear zero when input signal falls below a user-settable point.Output Gauge Helps Monitor UnitIndicates transducer output to positioner, permitting easy troubleshooting.Self-controlling Internal Regulator Reduces pressure to 22 psi / 1.52 bar, eliminating need for externalregulator.*With any sensitive pneumatic instrument, a clean air supply is required. Figure 4 shows an XL positioner with either anelectro-pneumatic or pneumatic module, installed on adouble-acting actuator for air-to-open action. Positioning is based on a balance of two forces: one proportionalto the instrument signal and the other proportional to thestem position. The current signal for the NT 3000 I/P module is firstconverted to a 3-15 psi air signal, while the 3-15 psi airsignal for the pneumatic model is passed directly intothe positioner. The transducer receives an electric current input signal and converts it to an output proportionalto the input. The supply pressure is filtered and regulated in the transducer by a filter element and an internalregulator. The output of the transducer is controlled by a feedbackloop consisting of a pressure sensor, electromagneticpressure modulator and circuit board. The pressuremodulator consists of a stiff flapper that is attracted bythe electromagnet to a nozzle. The nozzle-flapper spacing determines the transducer output. Based on thedifference between the input and the output measuredby the pressure sensor, the circuit board sends a currentto the pressure modulator that adjusts the nozzleflapper spacing to provide the correct output pressure tothe positioner. For more information, refer to the NT3000 I/P Transducer Module technical bulletinFlowserve Corporation, Valtek Control Products, Tel. USA 801 489 8611The positioner operates as follows: An increase in theinstrument signal forces the instrument signal capsuleand flapper downward. The detecting nozzle now releases air and the pressure decreases on top of the pilotvalve capsule. The pressure differential moves the pilotvalve capsule upward, opening the upper supply seatand allowing supply pressure to port 1. This opens theexhaust seat on port 2, causing the actuator piston tomove upward. The upward motion of the piston is transmitted back tothe positioner through the feedback linkage and camresulting in the spring being stretched proportionally tothe valve position. The piston continues to stroke upward until the force in the feedback spring increasessufficiently to counter the force generated by the instrument signal capsule. At this point, the balance beamand spool begin to return to their equilibrium position. As the valve spool ports start to close, the air flow rateto the actuator is decreased. After the piston has reached the required position, thefeedback spring tension force will equal the force generated in the instrument signal capsule. The flapper andinstrument signal capsule will remain in their equilibriumpositions with no air flowing to the actuator until achange in the instrument signal is made.A decrease in signal reverses the action, causing downward movement of the actuator piston and stem.5

valve controllers. Valtek control products are also known for handling the most severe services: cryogenic, superheated steam, volatile and corrosive fluids, erosion, high pressure drops, vibration, cavitation, flashing, and high noise levels. Valtek valves are equipped with spring cylinder actuators that provide the thrust and speed necessary .

Valtek Rotary Actuators Performance Torque Producing Capability Valtek spring cylinder rotary actuators produce sub-stantially higher torque than comparable diaphragm actuators because the cylinder operates with supply pressures up to 150 psi. Throttling diaphragm actua-tors are limited to 40-60 psi, thus decreasing their torque-producing .

The Valtek Mark One is the industry choice for a simple, reliable, tough globe valve. The Valtek Mark One TM globe control valve offers superior performance in liquid and gaseous services, while also permitting easy, fast and inexpensive maintenance. Unlike diaphragm-operated control valves, the spring-cylinder actuated Mark One provides .

Valtek's first choice of bellows seals for installation in Valtek Mark One valves. The Guardian can handle temperatures between -320 and 650 degrees Fahrenheit and pressures to 400 psi. The typical cycle life for Valtek's basic design when throttling between 25 and 75 percent open is 200,000 cycles. Figure 3 shows the
