ALOHA AND WELCOME TO MAUI - THE MAGIC ISLEIn 1996 mountain biking and triathlon met in a duel of the fittest onthe island of Maui. The race consisted of a rough water swim, amountain bike race, and a trail run. It represented a bold new racingformat that attracted outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers,mountain bikers and triathletes. The mountain bikers brought theirlaid-back style and bold self-assurance. The triathletes brought theirhard-core training and avid dedication. They soon discovered acommon “Live More” spirit that pulled them together. Therelationship flourished into an internationally-recognized brandcalled XTERRA, and today there are tens of thousands of athletesnot only taking part in the races, but truly living the lifestyle.A fitting representation of this “XTERRA Tribe” - 775 athletes from 35countries and 43 U.S. states – is gathered here at Kapalua Resorton Maui’s northwest coast; and on Sunday, October 27 at 9am,they’ll put their mental and physical toughness up against MotherNature at the 18th running of the XTERRA World Championship.Visit www.XTERRAMaui.com for raceday coverage.All the action is being filmed for a one-hour TV special that willbe broadcast across the U.S. starting in mid-January 2014.TABLE OF CONTENTSMedia Information . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .4Schedule of Events . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5How to Watch Guide for Spectators . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .6World Championship Quick Facts . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7Weekend event descriptions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .8-9Course Description, Course Map, and Course Profiles . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10-11Pro Start Lists . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .12-13Kahuna Dave’s Pro Race Preview . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .14-15Men’s Profiles (alphabetical order) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .16-35Women’s Profiles (alphabetical order) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .36-53Pro Prize Purse Information and Outrigger Double Information . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .54-55Past XTERRA World Championship Results . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .56-682013 XTERRA U.S. Pro Series and European Tour Results . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .69-70XTERRA World Tour Championship Race Winners . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .71XTERRA Hall of Fame and XTERRA Warrior Award Winners . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .72-732014 XTERRA World Tour Schedule (Tentative) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .74How XTERRA got started and the XTERRA Planet . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .75TEAM Unlimited and XTERRA.TV . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .76-772013 Amateur Start List (Sorted by Bib #) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .78-85Appendix (Past XTERRA World Championship Results)Maui No Ka Oi translates to"Maui is the Best"With 120 linear miles ofshoreline and more miles ofswimmable beach than anyother Hawaiian island it's nosurprise Maui has regularlybeen voted "Best Island in theWorld" by the readers ofCondéNastTravelermagazine. SPECTATORS GUIDE ON HOW TO WATCH THE RACEMaui’s World Championship XTERRA course covers 27 miles of unyielding terrain. The experience is a sensory riotfeaturing fragrant breezes, Pacific blue water, bright yellow sun, soft white sand, fine red dirt, and cool green lawns.Start and Swim: Located at the D.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, there are plenty of great vantagepoints to watch the mass start from the lawn above or down on the beach. Pros are easy to spot with their identifyingswim caps - men in blue and women in pink. A short beach shuffle mid-race between two 750-meter laps of an “M”shaped course gives spectators a chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.T1 and T2 - Bike and Run Transition: Located a few yards from the swim start in front of the Ritz. The transition areais for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over from any position around the boundary.Bike: Unfortunately, there’s really no place to watch the bike aside from the first mile out and back as the entire 18-milesingle loop course is on private land and not open to the public.Run: Most of the run course is open to the public (follow the red arrows backwards) but the best spot to watch is theleg-burning section of sand just before the finish line on D.T. Fleming Beach.Finish: The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is the place to be to watch the swim, the swim-to-bike and bike-to-run transitions, andthe finish line. Announcers will be on-site providing live race updates, plus there’s great food, the Paul Mitchell cut-athon, XTERRA Souvenirs, Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front row seat to one of the greatest spectacles inall of sport - the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of emotion at the finish line.Follow it live: Friends, Family and fans that are not able to attend the race can get live updates on the internet atwww.xterraMAUI.com starting at 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 6am in Sydney, Australia,8am in New Zealand, 4pm in Brazil).Free Parking: From Honoapiilani Highway go past the main Kapalua entrance (Office Road) and take your next left atLower Honoapiilani Road. Look for the XTERRA parking signs and staff to guide you.6

THE 2013 COURSE AT KAPALUAFor the third straight year the XTERRA Worlds course willtraverse Maui Land & Pineapple Company’s 22,000-acreKapalua oasis. There are changes from last year, however,to the bike course. The race starts with a 1.5-kilometer rough water swim atD.T. Fleming Beach fronting the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua; andwill feature wave starts beginning with pro men and women, followed by age group men, then age group women.Once on the bike riders will navigate from The Ritz to aridgeline - down to a ravine - and back up again like atropical roller-coaster ride through pineapple fields andforests. The bike is one big 18.6-mile loop with 3,100-feet ofclimbing that goes up-and-down the lower slopes of theWest Maui Mountains more than a dozen times. This yearseveral technical single and double track sections havereplaced dirt jeep roads.“The new stuff has tight, twisting, sharp corners, space justwide enough for your handlebars, places if you don’t get itright you’ll hit your shoulder on a tree,” said race directorDave Nicholas.“Almost all of the dirt roads have been eliminated on theway to the top and this will appeal to the better bikers. Atabout the five-mile mark you will pop out on a narrow ridgetrail with hundred foot drop offs on either side. Don’t panic– the top is at least 15’ wide and the views of thesurrounding forest and hills are simply spectacular. If Ididn’t fall off – neither will you. In fact, if you come early andpreview the course, bring your camera with you. Thescenery is something that not many people get a chance tosee.”Once on the 10K run competitors will be faced with a wholelot of climbing while they weave along dirt trails, throughOleander forests, and into 60-foot high ironwoodevergreens to an unexpected mountain lake at the 700-footlevel.gully where racers will have to jump over and duck underfallen trees, navigate a rocky dry creek, head through thickelephant grass, up a short rope-assisted scramble andalong a narrow single track trail with switchbacks that dropall the way down to the beach. The final test of skill andendurance is a calf-busting 250-meter sandy beach run.”COURSE QUICK FACTSSWIM DISTANCE: 1.5-kilometers (0.93 miles).Location: D.T. “KAHUNA DAVE’S” PRO RACE PREVIEWWhen it comes to racing andXTERRA there is no one morequalified to chime in than themanaging director of theXTERRA World Tour "KahunaDave" Nicholas.Indeed, the Mother Natureinspired XTERRA racing scenehas been his work-life passionfor nearly two decades now. He’s been to every WorldChampionship since helping to create the sport back in ‘96,and this year watched races unfold in South Africa, thePhilippines, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, France, Italy,Mexico, England and all over the U.S.It is that time of year for me to prove how wrong I can be. Ihave never seen so difficult a task to predict the winners asthis year, especially in the men’s race. You can’t look at the women’s field without seeing LesleyPaterson as the favorite. Super Czech pro HelenaErbenova handed the little Scot her only loss this year at theITU race in Holland but Les was not at her physical finestthere. Have no doubts; Erbenova is the real deal and hasdominated Europe for two seasons.Very much in the mix for the top spot is Chile’s BarbaraRiveros. Barb was 2nd at Maui last year and finished lessthan a minute behind Lesley at the USA champs andactually had a slightly faster run time. While he’s equipped with unequaled perspective on whomight take the checkered flag on the lush green lawn of TheRitz-Carlton, Kapalua on October 27, that doesn't meanhe'll get it right. In fact, he hardly ever does, going just 4for-22 in picking winners over the last 11 years.Lurking in the back with every possibility to win must bethree-time World Champion Julie Dibens. Julie made herXTERRA return at Beaver Creek this summer and showedoff her unbelievable swim skills and was very fast on thebike. She was still not 100% and backed down on the run– OR was she keeping her British powder dry?Regardless, the man is on the throttle and ready to take uson a hot lap so, with a grain of salt, but some tasty insightnonetheless, here are the Kahuna's 2013 Mauiprognostications Heather Jackson was 4th at Maui last year and has had aphenomenal 70.3 season. She raced at Utah but wascoming off a hard road schedule and did not finish on thepodium. She’ll be ready at Maui.sonretaPNever to be overlooked is three-time World ChampionMelanie McQuaid and the now-back-to-full-strength ShonnyVanlandingham. Both are motivated racers who are notready to be put in the “past their prime” bucket. How will it shake down? Dibens, Riveros, Jacqui Slack andChris Jeffrey will get out front on the bike. It will be up toLesley, Helena, Heather, Shonny, Melanie and the others tocatch them but not use up all their energy because theyknow they will be in a battle on the run. There are a number of very fast women who have everyexpectation to stand on the podium; Renata Bucher (SUI)Suzie Snyder (USA) Danelle Kabush (CAN) Jacqui Slack(GBR) Emma Garrard (USA) Kathrin Mueller (GER) FloraDuffy (BER), Carina Wasle (AUT) and South Africa winnerCarla Van Huyssteen are all fast and are all winners.14

“KAHUNA DAVE’S” PRO RACE PREVIEWFor the men it is even more challenging. Costa Rica’sLeonardo Chacon easily won Mexico and then repeatedagainst a strong field at Utah. This very quiet man is easy to miss in a crowd, but neverforget he was 4th last year at Maui. Look for him at thesharp end on Sunday. Josiah Middaugh has had a fabulousseason winning the USA series championship and has to bethe favorite. In 2012 he beat everybody in the field by over2 minutes, except one. Javier G
