MAHOVANewsOctober 2018October Brings Halloween Fun“Once in a young lifetime one should be allowed to have as muchsweetness as one can possibly want and hold.” Judith OlneyHalloween began with the ancient Celts, who marked the last dayof October as their New Year’s Eve. Surveys show thatHalloween, derived from the Christian observation of AllHallows E’en, now surpasses our own New Year’s Eve inpopularity. The National Retail Federation says that the holidaygenerates nearly 7 billion in retail sales, with the averagehousehold spending more than 44 on candy, costumes, andhome decorations.A survey by American Express found that 64 percent of adultsrank Halloween as a popular holiday in their households andcelebrate by trick-or-treating, going to a party, or watching scarymovies. Forty-seven percent said the holiday is not just for kids.More than a quarter of adults dress in costumes. More than 80percent of parents said they hand out treats, and nearly 60 percenttake their children trick-or-treating.Here at the Masonic Home of Virginia we will be having aHalloween Parade on October 30th. All residents are encouragedto don costumes (from the glamorous to the wacky) and join inthe fun. Also we will be having our annual Pumpkin Decoratingcontest. Pumpkins will be delivered mid-month, then displayedand voted on during the last week. The winner will be revealedduring the Halloween Parade festivities.“Backward, turn backward,O Time, in your flightmake me a child againjust for tonight!” Elizabeth Akers AllenIn This Issue:Health RxProgram HighlightsOctober CalendarBook EndsBehind the ScenesIn MemoriamBirthdaysWelcome New ResidentsWelcome New EmployeesResident AdvisoryCouncilPaula SwanseyPresident - D WingJames PalmerVice President– B WingSteve BollingerSecretary - VillageMildred Johnson and JamesPalmer-B WingPaula Swansey andLeon Headley– C and D WingsArt Gregory– Magnolia CourtPage 1

Book EndsBy Richard NeiswanderTHE GARDEN of EDENAND OTHER CRIMINAL DELIGHTSby Faye KellermanI liked the title of this book but didn’t look at it until I was home. Then I foundthat it contained seventeen short stories instead of one novel! The first story is aboutthe ‘Garden of Eden’. It is the work of Cecily Eden, thus the name. Cecily dies anatural death but there are some odd observances by her neighbors, Peter and RinaDecker. They are named in Cecily’s will as are her two daughters. Peter solves themysteries, learning that the daughters had ‘stolen’ money from their mother and hefinds a lot of hidden money. Presumably, Cecily hid it to keep the daughters fromstealing it. An interesting story in just 47 pages. I also enjoyed the other sixteenstories equally.REVENGE at BELLA TERRAby Christina DoddEli Di Luca is in trouble! He owns a vineyard and winery but his friend andaccountant has absconded all the cash and the taxes are due soon. Eli has little hopeof paying the taxes until an extremely wealthy man offers to pay the taxes if Eli willromance and marry his daughter, Chloe. The story follows them through discoveringeach other, also an eighty-year-old murder and the search for diamonds hidden by themurdered man. It includes attempts on their lives by the ancestors of the murdererswho still want to find the missing diamonds. Plenty of action, including a bombingof a cottage, but also a lot of romance. A little something for everyone.NO MAN STANDINGA Munch Mancini crime novelby Barbara SeranellaMiranda Mancini [called Munch by her friends] is a recovered alcoholic/drugaddict with an eight-year-old daughter. Her friend and fellow addict, Ellen, is gettingout of jail. The day before that event, Ellen’s mother and stepfather are murdered. The bodies also show signs of torture before their actual death.Someone wants something [money] that Ellen has hidden. Munch must solvethe murders so that she can cut a deal that will not send Ellen back to prison. Anexcellent story from the beginning until the end. I just wonder how accurate it is ofwhat is experienced by those caught in drug addiction.Page 7
