Activities in LockdownWinter 2020 – 2021The emotional and physical wellbeing of those with care and support needs andthose who care for them must be our absolute priority at this time. The provisionof activity is not the sole responsibility of one person however, the whole team canbe fully involved in an activity and engagement-based model of care. The advice from government foranyone in any setting is to followthese main guidelines:1. Follow current guidelines onsocial distancing2. Wash hands more often than usualand for at least 20 seconds usingsoap and hot water, particularlyafter coughing, sneezing andblowing your nose. Throw awaytissues immediately after use, then wash hands or use handsanitising gel.3. Clean and disinfect regularlytouched objects and surfaces usingyour regular cleaning productsto reduce the risk of passing theinfection on to other people.Approximately 400,000 older peoplein the UK live in care homes and asignificant proportion of these areliving with dementia, multiple healthconditions, physical dependency andmany are in their last year of life.Approximately 3,000 of our membersare care homes, they are facingunprecedented challenges as theCovid-19 outbreak continues and weenter another lockdown. Care homeresidents are particularly vulnerableto COVID-19 as a consequence oftheir complex medical problems andadvanced frailty.Care homes are required to havestandard operating procedures foreach resident with suspected andconfirmed COVID-19 infection.Including appropriate infection controlprecautions to protect residents andstaff. All care homes are requiredby law to notify their relevant publichealth authority regarding suspectedcases of infectious disease, who willprovide advice and guidance aroundinfection, prevention and control. The points listed below are NAPA’ssuggested ways of working, they arebased on government guidance andbest practice principles, they are notlegal guidelines. They are intended tosupport the provision of activity on aone to one basis.Having something to do can makepeople feel useful and valued. Talking, laughing, singing and just beingtogether can help improve wellbeingand reduce loneliness.1. Activity and care teams should useexisting care and support plansin order to develop individualengagement plans for eachresident in their care2. The plans should includeopportunities for activities overa 24-hour period and should notalways depend on the presenceof a member of staff to initiateengagement3. Where possible the plans should bekept in each resident’s room4. Care home managers shouldidentify a staff member to helpmaintain contact between residentsand their loved ones5. Activity and care teams shouldencourage family contact throughthe means of technology (weencourage our members tocontact NAPA for up to dateadvice on safe visits)6. Care home managers shouldenable the use of electronicdevices to maintain contactbetween residents and theirfamily and friends7. All staff to offer support andencouragement through one toone interaction with residents,in accordance with the requiredCOVID -19 restrictions. Theprovision of activity is not the soleresponsibility of one person; thewhole home can be fully involved inan activity and engagement-basedmodel of care8. Activity and care teams shouldproperly discard or sanitise activitysupplies according to the carehome’s Infection control policy9. Activity and care teams shouldensure items are not sharedbetween residents10. Activity and care staff should beenabled by care home managersto liaise with family members andor purchase necessary supplies foreach resident’s room, in order topromote one to one engagementand activitywww.napa-activities.co.uk / Activities in Lockdown / Winter 2020 – 2021 /2
