School of Neuroscience College of Science Virginia TechSchool of Neuroscience College of Science Virginia TechMessage from the DirectorStudent Commencement SpeakersTO THE 2020 GRADUATESLauren HaackeCongratulations on your big day! I encourage you to celebrate your accomplishmentand hope this graduation marks just the beginning of a lifelong journey of curiosity, discovery, leadership and service. Yes, you have earned your degree, but this is merely thestepping-stone for what is yet to come. Whateveryour next endeavor may be, we know that youwill succeed. What makes us so sure? Fouryears ago, you came to Virginia Tech fearlessand determined to major in an emerging newscientific discipline. Possibly not fully graspingthe field of Neuroscience and its scope, youhave since learned about the inner workings ofthe brain; the brain-mind connection; you havelearned to rely on data to make evidence-baseddecisions; you understand how human emotionis regulated by defined neurochemicals; youlearned the volatility of memories, and becameconversant in mechanisms of neurologicalillnesses. You learned how genes and theenvironment collaborate to shape human traitsDr. Harald Sontheimerand personality. Most importantly, you haveI.D.WilsonChair and Professorbecome a critical thinker and a person whoExecutive Directoris eager to impart on the world the power ofSchool of Neuroscienceknowledge.Lauren is an Experimental Neuroscience major. She is the co-founder and President of thestudent organization Synapse, serves on the founding executive committee for Nu Rho Psi,has been an undergraduate researcher for the Sontheimer laboratory, and is a researchambassador the College of Science. Lauren was selected as Virginia Tech’s UndergraduateStudent of the Year. She was also selected as a Fulbright Scholar. This fall she will bestudying brain injury and regenerative medicine in Heidelberg, Germany.I leave you with one challenge and it is not a simple one: “Make a difference in the world.”Always ask for evidence and the data that supports decisions we make individually or insociety. I know you will succeed. I thank you for choosing Neuroscience as your degreeand share pride in your future accomplishments.Good luck and congratulations.4 Commencement Program Class of 2020 May 16, 2020Commencement Program Class of 2020 May 16, 2020 5

Several Clinical Neuroscience courses emphasizethe translation of research findings into clinical practice and the roleand responsibility that healthcare plays in society.COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIORAL NEUROSCIENCEGraduates of the Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience major havecompleted a curriculum that focuses on thought processes in humans. These students have explored a wide array of topics including sensoryand motor systems, learning, memory, decision-making, language, sleep, mood, awareness, and attention.COMPUTATIONAL AND SYSTEMS NEUROSCIENCEGraduates of the Computational and Systems Neuroscience majorhave undertaken an interdisciplinary branch of Neuroscience thatincorporates theoretical and experimental approaches to understandthe brain. Graduates from this major have explored tools andtechniques that neuroscientists use to make sense of vast data in hopeof finding solutions to neurological diseases as well as understandingprocesses such as decision-making, addiction, motivation, and more.EXPERIMENTAL NEUROSCIENCEGraduates of the Experimental Neuroscience major have completeda curriculum that prepares students for a hands-on career in scienceor science education. These graduates have gained a comprehensiveunderstanding of genes, molecules, and cells that are the buildingblocks of the brain. Furthermore, many Experimental Neurosciencestudents have taken part in undergraduateresearch.22 Commencement Program Class of 2020 May 16, 2020Commencement Program Class of 2020 May 16, 2020 23

School of Neuroscience College of Science Virginia TechSchool of Neuroscience College of Science Virginia TechCommencement Keynote SpeakerGeorgia HodesDr. Hodes’ work in mice and human subjectsidentifies the underlying biology that contributesto vulnerability and resilience to stress andmood disorders respectively. She is interestedin understanding how the sex of an individualcontributes to their susceptibility to stress anddepression. Her goal is to develop novel personalizedtreatments and bioassays for mental illness so thesedisorders can be medically diagnosed and treatedeffectively.ALUMNIStay engaged within the School and continue to be involved with Virginia Techcommunity.Learn about alumni: https://www.alumni.vt.edu/Join the School of Neuroscience LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/groups/8633446/Dr. Hodes’ initial education was in the liberal arts. She received a B.A. in Drama/Dance from BardCollege and worked as an actor and a designer inNew York City. In 1999, she went back to school andobtained post-baccalaureate training at HunterCollege in order to pursue a graduate degree inGeorgia HodesNeuroscience. At Hunter she experienced her firstAssistantProfessor, foray into research studying sensory behavior inelectric catfish at the American Museum of NaturalSchool of NeuroscienceHistory and mirror self recognition in Beluga whalesat the New York Aquarium. Dr. Hodes was acceptedinto the laboratory of Dr. Tracey Shors at Rutgers University in 2001. She received herPh.D. from the Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience division of the Psychology programin 2007. At Rutgers University her research explored sex differences in the effects ofstress on learning and brain plasticity across the lifespan. In 2007, she began postdoctoraltraining in Pharmacology with Dr. Irwin Lucki at the University of Pennsylvania examiningthe contribution of growth factors and adult neurogenesis to genetic and sex differencesin vulnerability to stress. In 2010, she joined the laboratory of Dr. Scott Russo as a postdoctoral fellow for training in molecular neuroscience. Her work at Mt. Sinai focused onneuro-immunological and epigenetic mechanisms contributing to individual differencesin stress susceptibility. In 2013, she received a postdoctoral NARSAD young investigatoraward to examine the role of the cytokine Interleukin-6 in stress susceptibility. In 2015,she was promoted to Assistant Professor at Mt. Sinai. In 2016, she left Mt. Sinai to join thenewly formed School of Neuroscience at Virginia Tech as an Assistant professor where shereceived a second NARSAD young investigator award to examine sex differences in theeffects of stress on the peripheral immune system. She is an author of over 50 scientificpapers and has contributed to 3 different textbooks. She currently runs her own researchlaboratory at Virginia Tech examining how sex differences in the immune system interactwith the brain to drive behavioral differences in susceptibility and resiliency to stress.24 Commencement Program Class of 2020 May 16, 2020Commencement Program Class of 2020 May 16, 2020 25
