MIAA Handbook July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2019A message to Principals and Athletic DirectorsDear Association Leaders,This Handbook provides policies and procedures that guide the Association and itsschool leaders. Definitions, philosophy, conduct codes, and constitutional structuresare further examples of Handbook information and aids that can be useful to you atvarious times. Ideas for improving content or format are welcome. Please note, Rule32.1, “As a condition of a high school's participation in interscholastic athletics underMIAA Rules and Regulations, prior to the first fall season contest, each principal andathletic director must read entirely, understand, abide by, and be prepared to enforceall rules, regulations, and policies contained within this Handbook. Only the Board ofDirectors, executive staff, or their designees may interpret or clarify rules of theAssociation. All disputes will be resolved by the executive staff or Board of Directors. The principal and athletic director must assure that each member of the school'scoaching staff is knowledgeable of, and will enforce, all requirements containedtherein.”The electronic version (found at www.miaa.net) of this Handbook provides Principalsand Athletic Directors with rule resources that may be as helpful as the rulesthemselves. For example, the electronic version includes “icons” that provide ruleclarifications, supporting forms, etc. The electronic version also allows opportunityfor instant staff editing of language that a principal or athletic director might suggest.Individually and collectively, our belief is that the positive educational outcomes ofinterscholastic athletics do not happen by chance. They happen because teachercoaches and school administration adopt an intentional and purposeful approach tothe interscholastic athletic experience. Please remember always that your executive staff’s number one priority is toefficiently respond to a member school principal or athletic director who might benefitfrom our support. If you have any level of uncertainty about the application of a rule, please give us a call before you try to “reinvent the wheel.” Staff contact informationis easily accessed at the top of the “Members Only” section of our website. Thanks you for all you do!Very sincerely yours,MIAA Executive DirectorJune, 20173
