You are the congregation; there is no worship without you.As we gather for worship together in our different locations, we are making different choices ofhow to participate. Some are standing, sitting, and kneeling as they would in church, and singingwith enthusiasm. Others are participating in silence. Choral Evensong: May 13, 2021The Ascension of our LordDerived from the ancient monastic evening offices of Vespers and Compline, Evensong (literally“Evening Song”) is an almost entirely sung service. Thomas Cranmer, the first Anglican Archbishop ofCanterbury, combined the above two Roman Catholic monastic offices into one Anglican lay office, characterized by the chanting of psalms and the singing of the principal canticles from each – the Magnificatfrom Vespers and the Nunc dimittis from Compline. This felicitous pairing, and the mystical atmosphere of achurch at dusk, have fired the imaginations of many of the Anglican Church’s greatest musicians. Please notethat the texts to some of the sung items may differ slightly from what is printed in the modern Book of CommonPrayer, particularly the Suffrages.Numbers preceded by “BCP” are found in the Book of Common Prayer (Black Book)Numbers preceded by “S” are in the front portion of the 1982 Hymnal (Red Book)The Organ Voluntary: Prayer of Christ Ascending to his FatherOlivier Messiaen (1908-1992)Word of WelcomeThe Invitatory and PsalterThe Invitatory: PrecesRichard Ayleward (1626-1669)Officiant O Lord, open thou our lips;ChoirAnd our mouth shall show forth thy praise.Officiant O God, make speed to save us;ChoirO Lord, make haste to help us.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. The LessonsThe First LessonActs 1:1-11In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning untilthe day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to theapostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by manyconvincing proofs, appearing to them over the course of forty days and speaking about the kingdomof God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for thepromise of the Father. ‘This’, he said, ‘is what you have heard from me; for John baptized withwater, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore thekingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father hasset by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; andyou will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of theirsight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in whiterobes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw himgo into heaven.’The People stand. The MagnificatHerbert Howells (1892-1983)Evening Service for Gloucester CathedralMy soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imaginationof their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek.He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away.He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers,Abraham and his seed for ever.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The People sit.The Second LessonLuke 24:49-53And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you havebeen clothed with power from on high.’ Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up hishands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried upinto heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they werecontinually in the temple blessing God.The People stand. The Nunc dimittisHerbert HowellsEvening Service for Gloucester CathedralLord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, * according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, * which thou hast prepared before the face of all people,To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, * and to be the glory of thy people Israel.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: *as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.
