MIDDLE SCHOOL CHORAL CLINICSA. PurposeChoral clinics give students from different choralbackgrounds throughout the state an opportunity torehearse and perform together under the direction of aprofessional conductor. Participation in these clinics will:1. Unify large and small choruses in the commongoal of performing challenging choral repertoire.2. Allow students to hear other groups perform in apositive, non-competitive atmosphere3. Give teachers an unparalleled opportunity toshare ideas, music, and “tricks of the trade” andto benefit from first-hand observation of otherchoruses and conductors.4. Offer students opportunities to be taught byother choral directors.B. Registration1. Registration materials must meet the postmarkdeadline and be accurate and complete in orderfor choruses to participate.2. Participants in the clinics must be sixth, seventh,eighth, or ninth grade students attending amiddle or junior high school and enrolled in thechoral program of the school. Teachers must becurrent NAfME members. Sixth grade studentsmay only attend the 6th Grade Clinic.3. Registration fee is 3.00 per student. Teachersmay bring only the number of studentspreregistered. Teachers may wish to pay for afew extra students.4. Payment must be made by checks, moneyorders, or credit card. No purchase orders.5. A second location choice must be indicated onthe registration form and directors shouldprepare to attend either their first or secondchoice. Schools are assigned to clinics on a firstcome, first served basis.6. Directors will receive confirmation via email oftheir clinic assignments within 10 days of theregistration deadline and should read thisinformation carefully in case changes have beenmade to the original clinic date or location. Clinicchairpersons will send detailed information(schedule, directions, lunch arrangements, etc.)to clinic participants.7. NO refunds will be made after the registrationdeadline date.8. If a school is unable to attend a clinic for which itis registered, the teacher should contact thechairperson as soon as possible.9. School or districts are not to (1) send checksseparate from the registration form or (2) send acombined check for more than one clinic or morethan one school.10. SomedistrictswillrequireTaxIDinformation in order to send a check forclinic registration. Teachers should requestthis information from the Choral DivisionTreasurer in advance of the registration deadlineso all registration materials can be postmarkedon or before the deadline.11. South Carolina State Ethics Law states thatClinicians or Accompanists who bring their ownstudents will not receive payment.C. Schedule/Rehearsal Session1. Clinics must take place during school hours. Thelocal chairman will determine the schedule forhis/her clinic based on site restrictions, thenumber of schools participating, the clinician’sschedule, etc. The clinic schedule generallyincludes a morning rehearsal session, optionalinclusion of a short lunch break at the clinic site,individual school performances and a final“performance” of clinic music.2. If the clinic schedule includes a lunch break,students and chaperones should bring a baggedlunch and drink.3. All schools participating must be prompt. Schoolsmay need to find an alternative to school bustransportation should this pose a problem. If youare traveling out of town, do not expect to returnby the end of your school day!4. If district transportation is unable to meet theclinic arrival and departure time, the school is touse alternative transportation. Clinics will not beheld up for tardy groups. Late groups will beseated at the discretion of the site chairperson.Schools that arrive late or leave early mayreceive a Notification of Rules Violationsform.5. Each choral director is responsible for theadvanced preparation of all the clinic pieces.Music must be memorized and students musthave copies of the music available as theclinician desires. EXCEPTION: SSA and TTBstudents are NOT required to have the musicmemorized but must have the music in hand atthe clinic. PHOTOCOPIED MUSIC AND WORDSHEETS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.D. Behavior1. Each school MUST bring at least one chaperoneper 15 students. The choral director can serve asa chaperone for 10 or fewer students.Chaperones may include parents and teachers,but the choral director should not be counted asa chaperone (unless there are 10 or fewerstudents).2. Teachers and chaperoneswill constantlysupervise their students at the clinic and duringtherehearsalandindividualschoolperformances. Teachers who fail to provideadequate supervision for their students will benotified by the committee chairperson andappropriate action will be taken by the MiddleSchool Clinic committee.3. Teachers will prepare their students concerningappropriate behavior for the entire clinic day:a. Students should exhibit correct postureduring the rehearsal and during theindividual performances.b. A positive attitude and a spirit of unityshould be encouraged.c. No talking or disruptive behavior.5

d.No “booing” or other negative responsesfor any reason!e. Standing ovations are inappropriate.f.No hats are to be worn.g. No gum or candy is allowedh. Students must remain in the designatedareas only and must be accompanied by ateacher or chaperone at all times.i.No electronic devices or cell phones areallowed.j. Restroom breaks are at the discretion ofthe local chairman and clinician.4. Teachers with large groups are asked to bringtheir manageable, disciplined, best behavedstudents as well as adequate chaperones thatassist in monitoring.E.Individual School Performances (SSA, SATB,and Sixth Grade Clinics Only)1. Each school will be encouraged to perform ONEselection, not to exceed eight minutes(including entering and exiting the stage area).2. The director will choose the individualperformance piece.3. The individual performance piece cannot be oneof the clinic selections.4. Choreography (including snapping, stomping,etc.) should not be included during theindividual performance unless it is part of thewritten score.5. Groups may perform a cappella or with pianoaccompaniment only (taped/CD accompanimentnot allowed). Other accompanying instrumentssuch as flutes, tambourines, guitars, etc. areallowed if it is a part of the written score.Directors who do not bring an accompanistfor their individual performance areencouraged to send a copy of theirperformance piece in advance to theclinic’s accompanist.6. The director will receive comments only fromthe clinician. No ratings will be available.7. Teachers must provide one copy of theirperformance piece with the measures numberedfor the clinician. PHOTOCOPIES ARE ILLEGALAND MAY NOT BE USED. Turn in clinician’smusic to the clinic chairperson.8. EachINDIVIDUALSCHOOLPERFORMINGGROUP will receive a certificate of performanceor may purchase a PLAQUE. (Use the PLAQUEORDER FORM.)9. MIDDLE SCHOOL CHORALPERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTA. REGISTRATIONThe registration can be found on the SCMEA ChoralDivision website. Registration is not complete until thedirector completes all online forms, submits the PrincipalAuthorization Form, and payment has been received.The following forms must be submitted:ONLINE REGISTRATION FORMPRINCIPAL AUTHORIZATION FORMPAYMENT OR ONLINE PAYMENT CONFIRMATIONEligibility—Participating choral directors must bemembers of SCMEA. A photocopy of your current NAfMEID card must accompany the registration form. You willalso be required to show your membership at the time ofthe performance. (If a student teacher is conducting,they will also need to present their membership card).Additional choir registration requests may be submittedwith initial registration and will be considered if schedulepermits. Choirs must have at least 16 members in orderto participate.Cost—The registration fee is 180.00 per choir and mustbe remitted with the registration form by January 31,2018. No money will be refunded due to cancellationafter February 15, 2018. Checks should be made payableto SCMEA Choral Division. Repertoire changes cannot bemade for choirs after March 1st. Changes should bemade by contacting the Middle School ChoralPerformance Assessment chairperson.Dates—Middle school choirs will be scheduled for April11-13, 2017.
