Havering COVID-19 StatisticsThis report brings together information published elsewhere to provide residents witha clear statement about the coronavirus pandemic in Havering. It is updated weekly.New cases of coronavirusThe number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK is published each dayon the GOV.UK website1.The current situation in Havering – Week 13, ending 02 April 2021As of 02 April 2021, 26,597 Havering residents have tested positive for coronavirus.2Number of Havering residents testing positive for coronavirus each week from13 March 2020 to 02 April 5287392502687907930717945Number of -May17-Apr01-May03-Apr20-Mar06-Mar0From 2 July 2020 onwards, this website reported the results of testing in all settings and the data havebeen cleaned to remove duplicates. Previously, only pillar 1 data were shown. Pillar 1 comprises NHSand PHE labs testing NHS patients and staff, and care home residents and staff in new outbreaks; Pillar2 comprises commercial labs testing people in the community attending regional drive through centres, mobile testing units or requesting a home test and regular testing in care homes.2Prior to 12 May 2020, only NHS patients or people engaged in specific occupations could accesstesting, and many people do not develop symptoms and therefore do not know they should be tested;so many more people will actually have been infected.

64 cases were reported in the last week, a decrease of 17 cases compared to theprevious week. This equates to an incidence rate3 of 25 new cases/100,000 populationwhich is similar to London (26/100,000) but lower than the England average(38/100,000).Weekly rate of new cases per 100,000 population in Havering, London andEngland: September – 02 April 2021HaveringLondonEngland14001200Rate / Mar02-Apr0The number of new cases in Havering and in neighbouring areas began rising inSeptember before increasing dramatically during December. Rates stabilised over theChristmas period and then declined throughout January and into February. Theweekly rate of new cases has remained relatively static in March (at around37/100,000). Whilst this is a large decrease compared to December, it is higher thanrates seen in Summer 2020. It is therefore important that we continue to comply withthe current lockdown to suppress rates of infection even further.Latest weekly rates show all adjacent local authorities have rates above 15/100,000.Nationally, Doncaster (114/100,000) and Wakefield (110/100,000) have the highestrates.3Rates are used as a way of comparing the number of cases across different populations of differentsizes over a given period. In this instance, by calculating how many cases have been diagnosed forevery 100,000 people in Havering and other selected areas (number of cases / population size x100,000), we are able to compare the relative Covid-19 burden.

Positivity and rates of testingMore information about testing is now published at local authority level on the GOV.ukwebsite.Since May 2020, anyone with symptoms has been told to book a PCR test4. Positivityrate i.e. the % of PCR tests that test positive for coronavirus is another useful measureof the scale of new infections in the community. At New Year, more than 25% of all PCR tests of Havering residents were positive. The positivity rate has reduced since to 1.6% as at 31 March mirroring the fall in therate of new cases.NB. PHE advise that a positivity of 7.5% or greater is of concern. The decline seensince the New Year is good news but we must all continue to comply with the currentlockdown to suppress rates of infection even further.Weekly percentage of people testing positive (PCR test) in Havering: January to31 March 2021Havering Positivity % (PCR only)London Positivity % (PCR only)England Positivity % (PCR only)3025Positivity (%)20151050Early in January 18,000 PCRs tests per week were recorded for Havering residents. The number of PCR tests has reduced in the weeks since to 5,310 in the week endingthe 31 March as fewer people experience symptoms that might be coronavirus. Asimilar reduction has been seen across the country as a whole. It remains importantthat anyone with symptoms isolates immediately and books a test.4Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests go to a laboratory for testing. It can take a few days to receive the resultfrom these laboratory-based tests, however a positive result is very accurate for confirming coronavirus infection.

Between a quarter and a third of cases of coronavirus do not display symptoms andyet may be infectious. While lockdown lasts, anyone without symptoms who is unableto work from home is encouraged to regularly get a rapid community test using aLateral Flow Device5.Havering Council began providing residents with access to rapid community testingjust before Christmas and nearly 3,500 tests are now being done each week. This isin addition to testing undertaken by teaching and health and social care staff. Work tofurther increase participation in regular asymptomatic testing has begun which will bea crucial element in plans to identify and control outbreaks when lockdown is relaxed. As a result 23,773 Lateral Flow tests took place in Havering for the week ending 31March 2021, compared with 10,034 for the week ending 1st March 2021.Weekly number of people receiving a Lateral Flow Device Test (LFT) orPolymerase chain reaction (PCR) test in Havering: January to 31 March 2021Number of people in Havering who have had a LFT test the previous 7 daysNumber of people in Havering who have had a PCR test the previous 7 days4500040000Number of tests350003000025000200001500010000500005Lateral flow device tests (LFT) produce results in less than an hour without the need for processing by alaboratory.
