Brevard LiveHOT PINKBy Matthew BretzAll Photos byOak and Iron PhotographyThis month, Florida Beer Company is working in conjunctionwith Friends of Children of Brevard—a charity benefiting victimsof child abuse—to host a hugeevent for a great cause namedBeerapalooza and the one andonly James Spiva of the band HotPink is organizing all of the entertainment. It’s looking out to be areally fun party, and it’s the bestkind of party because all of thatfun turns into help for children inneed. I got together with Spiva totalk about the event and while Iwas at it, I was able to get someinfo about the man himself. Checkit out.So, what’s your background forthose of us that only know you fromthe audience? Are you what youwanted to be when you grew up?JS: As a kid I always wanted to be apaleontologist. I loved history and science but didn’t do too good in school. There were a few times, as a kid, thatI did something silly or accidentallyhurt myself and it got a big laugh fromeveryone. I was never embarrassed byit. I knew that making people laughwas what I wanted to do. I tried all thesports and even music but just neverhad the skill or patience for it. Actually,I kinda hated music until discoveringthe Beatles around the age of 14. Thatchanged everything. I had also gotteninto theater around that time and lovedperforming, so playing music in a bandwas definitely a dream job. Now at 30,I still play live music, I’m co-directingCocoa Village Playhouse’s production14 - Brevard Live March 2020of Into The Woods, and by day I workat The Dinosaur Store and Museum inCocoa Beach. I’ve had a lot of crummyjobs along the way, so I consider myself very fortunate to be doing what Ilove. Can you tell us about Hot Pink(HP) and how you got together? Andhow did you decide on such a crazyname?JS: A lot of people ask where the name“Hot Pink” came from. For a whilethere, Vintage was playing a string ofbreast cancer benefits in Orlando andthe color for the charity is pink. So, itwas kind of born out of that. My buddySpenny Crosswell was moving downhere from New York and we wantedto do something new and different. We’ve been through a few different iterations since then but we’re still goingstrong and having fun with it.Tell me about the event at FloridaBeer. What can we expect from theday?JS: Florida Beer Company is hostingthis event in cooperation with Friendsof Children of Brevard, a charity thatbenefits the victims of child abuse, andthey will be there at the event. It’ll bea full day of good music, good beer, and a good cause. We will have myold band Vintage, Mojo Hand, DirtyPower, Call the Wolf!, and of courseHot Pink. Can you talk about your Vintagedays and how the transition fromdrummer to singer was? Why are yousinging and not playing drums?JS: I had a lot of fun playing drumswith them boys. Had some real goodtimes. I only really got into playingdrums in the early days because wewere all playing guitar. I think I alwayskinda saw myself up front, but I gotreally good at the drums. I do miss itInterview WithJAMESSPIVAbut occasionally I get a chance to sit inwith them and realize that I was neveractually good at drums. Still a lot offun though. (Might have been a motiveto get them for the event if I’m beinghonest.)Your musical format with HP hasgarnered a pretty wide audience. Wasthat on purpose?JS: The happy medium for us was toplay songs that nobody else plays andnobody expects us to play but everyoneenjoys. You can make a living playingSweet Home Alabama but it’s easy andsafe. We’re goin’ for gasps. What inspires you? Who are youlistening to lately?JS: You know, I actually don’t reallylisten to music. I’m more moved bythe performance of the music. LatelyI’ve been quite inspired by the performers that have come out for theauditions of Into the Woods at the Cocoa Village Playhouse. We have sucha talented community and I love howfar the village has come in just the pastfew years. It seems like not that longago it was a ghost town after 8pm.Where do you see you and HotPink in the near future?JS: We love working with CVP and puton our Super Shows there. We’ve donetributes to Queen, The Beatles, PinkFloyd, and Motown. Those are greatbecause it gives us the chance to put ona bigger show with horn players, backup singers, etc. CVP is also expandingwith the construction of a black boxtheater next door that could lead tosome exciting new opportunities. You have a background in theater. How does that if it does translateand/or influence your shows?JS: I often tell people that I’m not amusician I just play one. I think beingan actor gives me a unique perspective

Brevard LiveThis is Hot Pink (from left to right): Jason Cook - Guitar, Jonathan Honeycutt - Drums,Bill Erskine - Bass, James Spiva - Vocals, and Cory Johnson - Guitaron putting on a show in general. I liketo put myself in the shoes of a character when writing or performing. What’s your favorite thing aboutmusic?JS: Music, like any art, is best whenit tells a truth of some kind. We knowthe play Hamlet. We know the character Hamlet. But no one comes out to asurf competition to watch boards ridewaves. We come to see the surfers. How have YOU been Hamlet? What are you absolutely gettingsick of?JS: Entitlement. That and pride inone’s ignorance. People don’t likescience because science is hard andthat’s ok but it’s nothing to be proudof. That culture has become hip as oflate because it validates laziness and itenables people to speak with authorityon matters that they just don’t knowanything about. What’s next for you?JS: Well, I’m currently prepping a section of Triceratops frill at the store.Stop by and check it out.Nice! What’s next for Hot Pink?JS: Next up for us in our lineup of Super Shows is the Rolling Stones show(May 15th, 16th,17th) and the Doorsshow (July 31st, Aug 1st, Aug 2nd).Check out CocoaVillagePlayhouse.com for tickets.Getting back to the event at Florida Beer Company, word on the streethas it you were pretty instrumental inputting it all together.JS: I just made the phone calls to getthe bands together. Not gonna take anymore credit than that. Florida Beer isdoing the rest. Thanks for taking the time tochat. Is there anything else at all youwould like Brevard county to knowabout you, your event or your band?JS: If you haven’t liked us on Facebook please do so you can find outmore about who we are, where we are,and what you’re up to. Facebook.com/HotPinkTheBand or our site Hotpinktheband.com and for all of you hashinit #Hotpinktheband. Brevard LiveGREG REINELBy Steve KellerGreg Reinel was a military brat. Never staying inan area for too long, that nomadic lifestyle followed him into adulthood. But for the 55 year old artist/musician now back in Brevard by choice, he couldenvision a Tarantino-esque script right here in HarborCity. Hell, he could even design the poster for its theatrical release.“I spent the my last year of high school in Palm Bay,” heremembers. By that time the Bradenton born Reinel hadgrown up in the suburbs of Chicago before returning to theSunshine State. “My dad worked at Harris and had a passion for art and engineering,” he continues. “He was likeJames Bond’s Q always involved with top secret projects.”Reinel’s passion for art and music grew as a young adult. The Screaming Iguanas of Love were a Melbourne basedband that have the distinction of being in the Robert DeNiro movie Cape Fear, sort of (a poster of the band is seenon the bedroom wall of actress Juliette Lewis in a pivotalscene). This could prove to have been foreshadowing forhim as he pursued his own passions.18 - Brevard Live March 2020Reinel continued making music. He moved to the Tampa/St. Pete area and formed the duo (once described as ‘lovethem or loathe them’) Nutrajet. There he would team upwith drummer Jeff Wood. The band found success whichincluded moving to England. The move influenced Reinelboth musically and artistically. Wood’s health then declinedas a result of a brain tumor. A move back to the states cameas a result and ultimately Wood succumbed to his illness. “Ifound it hard to continue playing music when Jeff died,” heconfides. He then channeled his love for music to more ofa visual side.He started out making posters for local shows. His flyer designs were reproduced black and white copies for thevarious concerts that went through Orlando. His ‘big break’took place when the popular British band Supergrass cameto town to play at what is now known as The Social. “I was abig fan of theirs partly from my time in England”, he recalls. He brought his design; a souped up Mustang (muscle carswould be a repeated theme) alongside a beautiful woman(another theme) with the details of that night’s concert onit. This time the black and white copies were replaced withslick color silk screening suitable for framing. Upon inspection pre-gig, the band not only agreed to sell them at themerch table, but insisted on Reinel keep all the money. Theposters sold out before the band even hit the stage.Suddenly Reinel had the makings of a career. And amoniker. He had given an old matress to a friend in need. The nickname ‘Stainboy’ meant to be embarassing nowstuck as his namesake. He repeated the process of creating, producing and presenting his works to the bands playinglocal shows. Some went well. Really well. Others did not.Lee Ving, singer of iconic punk band Fear, has a reputationthat precedes him. Upon arriving at the venue, he spottedReinel with a stack of this design. “He assumed that I wasbootlegging them to sell for my own profit,” he remembers. At this time, Reinel would agree to a percentage with theband before showtime. “He started yelling and causing ascene,” he continues. “I said ‘f*** this’ and started handingout the posters to the people standing in line.” Ving was thenbrought up to speed; that Reinel was not intending to rip theband off, and invited him back into the venue. “He put hisarm around me and laughed it off,” he concludes.Reinel’s work and his guerilla marketing style soon attracted bigger venues in the Orlando music scene. “I basicallywalked into House of Blues with some of my prints. Theyliked them so much they wanted to do a series for the showsthat would come there,” he explains. “A lot of other artistswere upset since they had been waiting for a response totheir inquiry. I went in unannounced and got the gig”.One memorable event happened in 2005 when he wasdropping off prints for that night’s Elvis Costello show.“Elvis was very specific; no outside promo posters for his

shows,” he recalls. “I couldn’t attend the show for somereason, I don’t even remember why now. I dropped offthe posters and my HOB contact said ‘wait right here’.Not too long after, Elvis came up. He said he loved theposter. He said he was told that I couldn’t come to theshow that night so he invited me to soundcheck. Insteadof just being a fly on the wall to observe, he had me shoutout songs that they would play.”This new enterprise of incorporating his love of music and cars alongside his artistic abilities soon caught on.Local FL gig posters became client requests for showsall over the globe. Reinel was now traveling all over thestates to festivals. A chance encounter at a show in Oregon led to his greatest release to date. Dark Horse Bookswanted to release a collection of his work as a coffee table book. Entitled Vicious Intent, the forward was writtenby iconic artist and friend Frank Kozik.Reinel is in demand not only for the concert posters, but album art and commissioned pieces of all kinds. Tobring it full circle, the band Supergrass are releasing aboxed set of their work this year. Inside is a collector’sreprint of Reinel’s Orlando poster. Finished prints of TheDevil’s Rejects have found their way to writer/directorRob Zombie (wife/actress Sherry Moon Zombie and actor Danny Trejo have both posted on their social mediaabout it). A recent Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry poster hada limited release and is in high demand.Throughout all this career success, Reinel has relocatedback to Brevard. Living in the same Palm Bay house hespent some of his youth in, he finds a safe haven to workon his art. “This place has just enough trouble to keepme busy,” he muses. A recent relationship also keeps hisinterest here. He finds it remarkable that the same streetsof Eau Gallie he wandered around as a teenager are here, relatively untouched. “I love that everything is still here, but better,” he marvels, noting that last year’s Space CoastMusic Festival was a highlight. Last year also saw thecontinued next pageBrevard Live Live March 2020 - 19

Penertration; A tribute to The Stooges featuresReinel on lead vocals backed up by the Orlando bandThe Tremolords. “That was fun, we’re talking about doing something like that again this year,” he says.Reinel’s social media presence is a great way to viewhis career spanning works as well as keep up with his newprojects. “I’m involved with this collective,” he shares.“A group of people hire me to work on a design, thenhave first rights to the finished poster,” he explains, noting that he is booked for the foreseeable future.” For nowit looks like he is staying put here in Brevard. “The area, and EGAD in particular, look like something out of aQuentin Tarantino story,’ he shares. As a recent Facebookpost suggests; “Looking forward to seeing old friendshere again and meeting many new ones and also doingsome knockout work while here. The ColumnBy Chuck Van RiperIDollar to Doughnuts’ll bet you dollar to donuts you can’t tell me where theterm dollar to doughnuts came from. Does that soundlike something from the department of redundancy department? You might notice that “donut” is spelled two different ways. Which is correct? Actually, both are, althoughthe abbreviated “donut” seems to be uniquely American. The rest of the civilized world spells it “doughnut”. Anyway, back to our original query, originally coined in the1870’s the phrase was meant to mean that something wasa sure bet. A dollar was worth something but a doughnutwasn’t.
