Grant HighlightRadical HospitalityPassionate WorshipThe Salvage Yard, JoplinThe Salvage Yard doesn’t look like a typicalchurch and the worship services are noticeablylouder. This environment may not be for everyone, but for many, it is the catalyst that connects andreconnects them with Jesus Christ. In 2006, The Salvage Yard was awarded a 5,000 challenge grant by the Missouri UnitedMethodist Foundation. The proposal described aproject to record worship services and concerts forbroadcasting over the Internet. As an outreach ofSaint Paul’s United Methodist Church, The SalvageYard provides an open door that is free from worryor intimidation. Internet broadcasting opens thatdoor much wider to people around the world. It’s apractice we now know as Radical Hospitality. Thanks to a generous church member,The Salvage Yard met the challenge withover 5,000 in recording and computerequipment. The Foundation grant thenprovided for the purchase of a soundmixing board and digital recordinginterface. Remaining funds were set backfor an additional video camera and a videomixer.Within one year, audio broadcasts of sermonswere available and had garnered nearly 1,000 hits onthe website. Confirmation of the project’s successcontinues to come in the form of listener emailsfrom Joplin to Iowa and beyond. What’s next for The Salvage Yard? According toministry leader, Ben Bainbridge, the next step is tomake videos available for download. Future plansalso include recording sessions with local artists toproduce live and studio albums that will share themessage of Jesus Christ. For more information about The Salvage Yardor to download audioand video, visit www.thesalvageyard.com.Visit our website and discover whatthe Foundation can do for you. 8Downloadable grant applicationsScholarship application instructionsFree brochures in quantityCharitable gift annuity calculatorsChurch investments Stock donationsPlanned giving educationEndowment supportStewardship servicesAdditional backoffice support

A few years after John’s death, Elizabethand her sons decided to discontinue the familyfoundation. Gifts were made to the University ofMissouri, Central Methodist College, StephensCollege, and other causes. Jerry estimates that allthe gifts made from the foundation over the yearstotaled about 2 million.Among those gifts were two made to theMissouri United Methodist Foundation benefitingchurches built by Epple Construction. One gift of 50,000 created a traditional endowment providingannual income for the benefit of the Linn MemorialUnited Methodist Church in Fayette. The secondgift was the seed awaiting its 25-year harvest.Bob, Jerry, and their mother wanted to ensurethat the Missouri UMC would never again have topostpone maintenance on the grand, stone buildingat 9th and Locust streets in Columbia.
