It wasin that role that he caught the eye of BobSquires, who, as AKC Director ofObedience, was looking for a new rep.“Bill knows dogs and he knows people,”adds Squires. “When he watched a dog, hesaw everything. Older judges rememberedhim as a good, clean, honest exhibitor. Theyounger exhibitors coming up knew him as agood judge-fair, pleasant in the ring. He’srespected by old and young alike. He wasperfect for the job!”“As an exhibitor, his sportsmanship wasalways first class,” says longtime friend andobedience judge Joe Heidinger. ”At one ofthe Gaines Regionals his dog bombed and soThe World Cup Team at Crufts with (standing l.to r.) Iwrite reports, and there aren’t many badreports. A pleasant job, a dream job, really.I get to see old friends, and meet new ones.”As team manager, Thayne took the AKCWorld Cup Team to Crufts last year.Consisting of three dog and handler teamsand one alternate, all selected from thecountry’s top OTCH dogs. The Americancompetitors finished ninth in a field of 12.It was a dark and stormy nightThayne grew up in Vestal, a town inupstate New York. From the time he was 4,his family had dogs. After graduating in1953 from Cornell with a degree in animalhusbandry, he earned a Ph.D. in ormation judging of dairy cattle is quitesimilar to judging dogs,” he says. “Onedifference is that in livestock, judges givereasons for their placements, what was goodin this particular animal, not so good in thisanimal.”From 1962 to 2002, Thayne was aprofessor of animal science and statistics atWest Virginia University, which bestowed onhim the title professor emeritus. He and JoAnn, his wife of 44 years, livein Binghamton, New York, with Seamus theBorder Collie and Andy the Smooth FoxTerrier. When Thayne isn’t repping or skiing, heseeks adventure on the high seas. A fewyears ago, he and three other sailing studentscrossed the Gulf Stream from Coral Gables,Florida, to the Bahamas on a 32 foot O’Day.The chop turned rough during a nightthunderstorm while the instructor took a nap,Perri GrafTyne HorvathStacy JudgeDeb HarperJudy DrotarDale Burrier330 547-2384330 788-5901330 533-0748330 638-5232330 637-4875330 872-3277leaving Thayne and one other student to sailthe boat.“In the Bahamas, lightning struck. Itshot down the mast and traveled out theboom. No one was hurt, but one of the crewwas standing in front of the boom and itlooked as if fire were shooting out his ears.”Back on dry land and wearing his rep hatagain, Thayne advises the novice to start withrally and work up to obedience. In training,he suggests a balance between positive andnegative, adjusting training methods to thebreed and the individual dog within thebreed.“It’s different with various dogs,” hesays, “just like teaching kids.”The professor emeritus should know. Even if you don't havea pet, please pass this to those who do.Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixespurchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. Theyloved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away fromtheir garden. Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled goodenough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few timeswhich was typical when she eats something new but wasn't actinglethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypsoout for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had aseizure and died instantly.Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, uponfurther investigation on the company's website, this product isHIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It istrue that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat CocoaMulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending oneach individual dog). THE HAPPIEST MEMORIES OFA DOG SHOWBy Nancy ConnorYesterday, I experienced a very unusual thingindeed. It might restore someone's faith inhumanity! I know it did mine.As with all forms of competition, there comes acertain amount of ambition, goal grabbing, disappointment, anger and even revenge inextreme cases. Some of it is just the nature ofcompetition, the majority of it is just malice. Dogshowing is no exception. Unfortunately, all too oftenI have stood at ringside and heard maliciouscomments, bitching and bickering. Dog showpeople can be very cruel to each other sometimes.I have on occasion been the brunt of thesecomments, but that's another story. Well, yesterdayI had a breath of fresh air, as it were.I was stewarding at the Rough Collie Club ofIreland's Championship show. It's a relativelypopular breed here in Ireland. Always a big entry. They had a wonderful judge from the U.K. This ladyhas been in the breed since 1949. So, I t goeswithout saying, I was pretty privileged to steward forher. Anyway, just before the Novice class, one ofthe club officials came into the ring and, I overheardher tell the judge about the one entry in the class, Ithought it was unusual that there was one entry inthe class, but later found out the reason why!I called the class, and in walked an old man and hisRough Collie. I've only ever seen this man at ourSt. Patrick's Day show. He's an old man, rougharound the edges and, well, his dog is reallyunkempt by show standards. He marched proudlyinto the ring with the dog on a great big, thick ropelead! While the judge was going over the dog, I wasfilled in on his story. I was told that he lives in anold folks home in Galway (the other side of Ireland). He has no family left living and no visitors at the oldfolks home. He's been showing this dog for eightyears only ever on St. Patrick's Day or the Clubshow. He'd traveled 50 miles on a bus yesterdaymorning, which takes about 5 hours in Ireland. Thenurses in his home usually phone the club to tell ofhis departure, and the club usually phones backwhen they spot this old man at the show.He has only ever shown the dog in Novice, andpeople over the years never compete against him.4The nurses told the club officials that when he winsa rosette at a show, he wears it for weeks at homein the old folks home. The dog lives with him at thehome and is quite a celebrity "Show dog" with allthe residents. The pride and joy of this man's life.He spends half the year telling people about thelast dog show and the other half of the year lookingforward to the next one!Anyway, the judge was so considerate to this man. And, boy, was he proud to show his dog off. Whenthe judge asked could he look at the dog's teeth,"Oh yes," the man replied and instructed the dog to"Smile." With that, the dog showed off a perfect setof choppers! The judge replied, "Aren't you a cleverdog?" With that, the man said "Oh, he is veryclever, he'll shake your hand, too, if you like." Icouldn't help smiling when I heard this, and fullcredit to the judge, she shook hands with the dog.The dog won first in the class and every exhibitor atthe show, gave this old man and his dog a standingovation. He was cheered and clapped as he did hisown lap around the ring.People came over to the ringside to congratulatehim and pat the man on the back as he left the ring.Talk about Elvis leaving the building, this man wascertainly the king when he won his class. He wasjust so proud of his accomplishment. He lapped upevery minute of it. It was the first time, I'm sad tosay, that I've seen people being genuinely nice at adog show. They really made this old man's day.Possibly year! Heaven help the residents at the oldfolks home when he returned home last night. Notonly did he win a rosette but also won a great bigtrophy. I'm sure it will take pride of place on themantle piece. Isn't this what dog showing should beabout?!!Giving people like this old man a day out to enjoythe only family he has. His best pal, his dog. Amemory for an old man to hold on to, to brighten hisday, something to share with his friends at the oldfolks home? Something to be proud of, howeversmall the achievement?Anyway, that's the story, just a thought, anobservation and possibly an inspiration to us all?I know it's one of the happiest memories I have of adog show."
