Howard Weinberger, MD, Division Head, is adiplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the AmericanBoard of Internal Medicine, and the American Board of Internal Medicinefor Cardiovascular Disease. Kern Buckner, MD, is a diplomate of theNational Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of InternalMedicine, and the American Board of Internal Medicine for CardiovascularDisease and Interventional Cardiology.National Jewish — A Cardiology PioneerCardiology is not a new program for us. Between 1948 to 1968, theNational Jewish cardiology surgery program pioneered work in openheart surgery, including: performing the first mitral commissurotomysurgery in the western U.S.; using climate controlled surgical suites withthe finest lighting; devising a chemical procedure to stop ventriclefibrillation; developing an electrode to measure the natural electricaloutput of heart cells and creating a high-speed, low-radiation x-raytechnique. Clinical Highlights*Interventional PulmonologyNew Options for Your PatientsMIDC is open for bronchoscopiesand GI proceedures.National Jewish is now one of only a handful of centers aroundthe country — and the only center in the Rocky MountainRegion — offering interventional pulmonology services with aformally trained specialist.Services Include:Ali I. Musani, MD, FCCP, joined National Jewish mid-January tolead our Interventional Pulmonology Program. Most recently hewas the Director of the Interventional Pulmonology Program forPresbyterian Medical Center at the University of PennsylvaniaHospital. It is one of the most active and well-respectedprograms in the nation. Airway recanalization with laser and other modalities Removal of foreign bodies Identify, diagnose and treat pulmonary nodules Early detection and staging of lung cancer Diagnose and treat airway obstructions due to benign andmalignant diseases Pleural procedures Airways stent implantation and removal Balloon dilatation of airways (balloon bronchoplasty)Dr. Musani and his team will utilize our new state-of-the-artMinimally Invasive Diagnostic Center (MIDC) for most of theprocedures. Equipment available includes:The National Jewish Interventional Pulmonary Program offers awide spectrum of minimally invasive diagnostic, therapeutic andpalliative airway procedures. Dr. Musani is an internationalexpert in the latest technologies such as EndobronchialUltrasound for early detection and staging cancers of the lungand other organs; Super Dimension navigation system for earlydiagnosis of pulmonary nodules; and laser therapy for tumorablation and stent placement in the airways for myriad of benignand malignant diseases. He is a Diplomate of theAmerican Board of Internal Medicine and the American Boardof Internal Medicine for Infectious Diseases. Prior to coming toNational Jewish, he served as Division Chief for InfectiousDiseases at Rose Medical Center where he worked in privatepractice. He was voted a Top Doc in 5280 Magazine for BestInfectious Diseases and AIDS Care from 1994 to 1999 and BestAIDS Care physician from 1999 to 2004.The National Jewish HIV program provides a unique blend ofdiagnosis, early stage treatment, health maintenance care,therapeutic drug monitoring, and full service research.
