The Elsevier Foundation 2019 Board ReportYoungsuk “YS” ChiChairmanElsevierDirector of Corporate AffairsRELXPresidentThe Elsevier Foundation “Inclusive health and research ecosystemsare more critical today than ever before. Wehave a profound role to play in supportingpartnerships which incubate new approaches, highlight inequities and catalyze change.”ForewordAs we all struggle to adapt to our rapidly changing world inthe age of COVID 19, the Elsevier Foundation’s mission toadvance inclusive health and research in service of the UNSDGs remains as relevant as ever. Over the past few years,we have worked hard to embed technology across manykey partnerships and have seen this focus bear fruit as theworld has gone into preventative pandemic measures. GirlsInc NYC, a new partner in 2019, serves a vulnerable urbanpopulation which has been particularly hard hit by thebreakdown in social and financial safety nets. Within a weekof New York City schools closing, they were able to deliverall of their programs, including PreG3: The Elsevier DataAnalytics Preparatory Program, virtually and are working asquickly as possible to equip their girls with the necessarytablets, internet and technical skills.Embedding TechnologyOur efforts to embed technology across many of ourpartnerships have been increasingly timely. This year, our longstanding partner Amref, which provides healtheducation in Africa, officially launched “Jibu” (the Swahilifor “answer”), a continuing education app we havesupported to offer efficient and cost-effective training fornurses in East Africa. We also supported the roll out of aResearch4Life training MOOC in 2019 which serves as anintegrated complement to our face-to-face training. TheMOOC ensures that distance learning on how to use criticalResearch4Life resources can proceed despite the physicallimitations that users and trainers are dealing with today.Inclusive HealthThis year, we also doubled down on our inclusive healthfocus in the US, adding two new partnerships whichtap technology to tackle issues faced by underservedcommunities. The Latino Diabetes Citizen ScientistsProgram will assist in the training of community healthworkers to gather critical data and use wearable tech toreduce health literacy barriers for adults suffering fromType 2 Diabetes, a disease disproportionately prevalent inthe US Latino Community. With our support, the NationalLeague of Nursing (NLN) will be able to develop the“NLN/Elsevier HBCU Excellence in Technology Innovation”5

The Elsevier Foundationprogram, which will provide e-learning modules that enableeducators to better guide students through the transitionto professional practice. Ultimately, the NLN aims to boostthe numbers of successful nurse graduates from lessrepresented backgrounds serving in US hospitals. Both ofthese programs exemplify how the Elsevier Foundation canmake a difference with funds and access to health expertise, content and networks.Inclusive ResearchNor have we neglected our inclusive research focus toincrease access to science, health and tech education forwomen, youth and researchers from developing countries. Our ISC3 Green & Sustainable Chemistry Challenge andOWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career WomenScientists in Developing Countries have highlighted risingstars and role models in 2019 and 2020. By providingcrucial recognition, we have sought to not only opensdoors for the winners but also for those following in theirfootsteps. In the words of the 2020 OWSD Kenyan awardwinner, computer scientist, Dr. Chao Mbogo, “This Awardis a testament that designing technological tools thatsupport learners is important and timely work, especiallyfor students in developing countries who may not havemuch access to information or opportunities. This awardhas acted as a strong reminder to me to never stop holdingthe ladder up for others.”Inclusive research is also an area where Elsevier, theFoundation’s core funder and supporter, has madesignificant strides this year. In March, Elsevier CEO andFoundation Board member, Kumsal Bayazit, launcheda new Inclusion and Diversity Advisory Board cochairedby Dr. Richard Horton, Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet andsupported by distinguished experts across a wide rangeof fields. The Elsevier Foundation has an opportunity tolearn from the new board and identify partnerships thathelp work towards lasting solutions to promote inclusiveresearch and measurable change. As we gear up for the 5th Anniversary of the UN SDGsthis year, it is critical that we continue to pose the difficultquestion of whether the Elsevier Foundation is doing enoughto support impactful programs in the most thoughtful andeffective way. Since 2016, we have committed to many 3year partnering cycles which offer time for partnerships tomature, develop and deliver. However, we have also learnedthat this approach ties down our funding and limits ourability to respond rapidly and effectively when the needarises. Clearly, we must embrace the challenge to find viableways to support our ambitious programs while ensuringoptimum flexibility in a rapidly changing world. We lookforward to exploring these issues with our distinguishedadvisors and Board members.20th April, 2020The Elsevier Foundation Board MeetingYoungsuk “YS” ChiPresident, The Elsevier Foundation

Our ProgramsOver the past few years, we have aligned our programs to key challenges in science, health and diversityidentified by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have also recognized that technological solutions areincreasingly playing a role in helping the world to tackle these. This has led us to evolve our approach into atech-enabled, partnership-driven model allowing us to develop our knowledge and networks while facilitatingcloser, more sustained and impactful involvement in the work of these organizations.HEALTH & INNOVATIONInformation technology can significantly advance the delivery of healthcarein developing countries, addressing problems such as the high risk ofmaternal death across Africa and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Wedirectly support organizations working to improve health outcomes in boththe Global North and South through the innovative use of technology todisseminate health information.RESEARCH IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIESOnly 2% of sustainability science research output is produced by developingcountries, even though they are often the hardest hit by climate change, food, energy and other scarcities. For many low-income countries, thisso-called ‘science poverty’ limits the effectiveness and potential for scienceand innovation to be relevant to their needs. Our partnerships aim to widenaccess to academic knowledge and deepen the involvement of scientists indeveloping countries in SDG-driven research relevant to the issues they face.DIVERSITY IN STMThe future of science requires a robust and diverse workforce drawn fromall corners of society. Encouraging scientific, technical and medical careersamong young people with severely limited educational resources and fewprofessional role models is a particular challenge. To address this, we haveexpanded our longstanding focus on advancing women in science to includepartnerships helping under-served youth receive greater exposure to scienceand health education.MATCHING GIFTTo encourage generosity and community involvement, the ElsevierFoundation provides matching funds to charitable organizations that Elsevieremployees personally support. We earmark 200,000 to match individualand group donations to eligible non-profit organizations around the world, aswell as global disaster relief efforts.

Doctors without Bordersepicentre nigerIn Niger, infectious diseases and child malnutritionare the principle causes of mortality. In 2009,Epicentre, MSF’s research and training arm, established its third research center in Niger todevelop a viable West African hub to developimplementable solutions to clinical and public healthproblems. Since then, the Niger Research Centerhas developed a strong research portfolio andbuilt capacity to investigate epidemics, implementalerting and monitoring systems, conduct clinicaltrials and prevalence surveys while working withNiger’s Ministry of Health and evaluating impact. However, Niger and the Sahel, remain one of theleast developed regions in the world with pooracademic, research and health infrastructure. Ourpartnership supports the training of Epicentre’sAfrican staff with the goal of eventually running theCenter autonomously. Key scientific staff such as fieldinvestigators, laboratory technicians, epidemiologistsand clinical statisticians have received advancedindividual and institutional training in technicalareas and have been able to present at Epicentre’sScientific and Medical Days in Paris and Niger, travelfor courses and conferences, build their internationalnetworks and take up other training assignments inMSF programs and African research centers.Primary outcomeThe partnership focuses on building the capacity of Epicentre Niger’smedical and scientific staff, reinforcing Epicentre’s ties to theprovincial authorities to guarantee optimum rapid response to health crises.Goals Provide opportunities outside of Niger for medical and scientificstaff at the Center to receive additional training to further their careers. Encourage medical and scientific staff from Niger and surroundingcountries to be mentored and mentor others to sustain a vibrantresearch culture. Provide opportunities for staff to promote Epicentre’s visibility andencourage discussion on pressing medical research issues in Africa. Improve the quality of clinical studies in the long term.Milestones The benefits of support for Epicentre Niger have beentransformative. Key scientific staff has been able to travel for trainings, connect with international scientists and expand their skill sets. The Epicentre Medical Day in Niamey, 21 January 2020:researchers, public health experts and government officials werebrought together discuss best practices in dealing with meningitis, malaria and malnutrition for Niger and the Sahel region. 7 medical and scientific staff members have participated in theresponse to the Ebola outbreak in DRC - participating in seminars, trainings and the development of a novel vaccine trial for Ebola in Zaire.
