PLYMOUTHCONGREGATIONALUNITED CHURCH OFCHRISTBURLINGTON, WIVOL XIV, ISSUE XIIDECEMBER 2019The Plymouth EpistleA Newsletter for the Members & Friends of Plymouth Congregational UCC, Burlington, WIWORDS FROM WANG – “Advent and Christmas Wishes”Every year it’s the same thing. The sun goes down on all hallows eve and with the flipof a switch, the market-driven announcement is made: “It’s the holiday season.” Andmy sermon-ship on this popular topic has already sailed (i.e. season’s greetings, happyholidays, merry Christmas; you know the scene and that worn out debate).Special points ofinterest:TIME YET TO GRAB AGIFT FOR CHRISTMASFAMILIES!Packer Party– Dec 8It is a forgone conclusion that our world has (unofficially) declared that the yuletideseason is now and will forever be, made up of two very different holiday foci. Theone that the dominant culture partakes of, and the one that devout Christians practice(and hopefully, prefer). Many would argue that the “consumer driven” version ofChristmas brings with it certain rituals and practices that actually contradict many ofthe core values of our faith. However, this commentary in no way deserves an “oh,you’re such a Scrooge - Humbug” response. It does deserve an evaluation of ourpriorities, however. And like all things, calls for some discernment.I dare say those who truly know me will not perceive my remarks as judgmental. Therefore, it is my annual hope that there are actually more folk who have developed(or are developing) a similar attitude for approaching the holiday season; and seek toavoid the allure or getting caught up in the chaos and “rushed” nature of the holidayseason.Inside this IssueWorshipOpportunities2Adopt-A-Family3Christmas FundOffering4John DenverChristmas Concert5Chrismas DinnerHelp Needed!7Birthdays & More8Calendars1011Thus, without imposing guilt, may I simply encourage those who value the truth andtreasure of this special season to engage in the spiritual practice of waiting, wondering, and wishing; in short, practice what the ancients did. To enter into a time of mentaland spiritual preparation by beginning the season slowly, advancing with the expectation of a blessing, not only in days ahead, but along the path as well; and finally toarrive at the manger where the spirit of the Christ child dwells. As you traverse, offer an advent wish or message to those whom you encounter. The term, Advent, is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming". May your Adventgreetings or wishes, therefore, be reflective of the good work that is yet to be done inthe name of the one who comes in the name of the Lord. For the extraordinary thing that is about to happen is matched only by the extraordinarymoment just before it happens. Advent is the name of that moment. Please join with mein offering Advent greetings as we anticipate the coming of Christmas that, the last time Ichecked, begins on the 25th and concludes on January 6th. We wait. We watch. Wehope. Advent. Blessed is the one who “comes” in the name of the Lord.See ya’ in church.Pastor Bob
