DIRECTOR TEAMJason Smith (Acting & Props Director) "Greetings! I am thrilled to once again bejoining the director's team for this year's musical Beauty and the Beast. This is mythird year here at Mineral Point and my 10th year teaching over-all. I currentlyhold a Bachelor's Degree from Colorado Mesa University, a Master of Arts fromThe University of Northern Colorado, I completed my Teacher Certificationthrough Concordia University in Madison. As a high school and college student, Iwas active in theater and have been very fortunate to extend my passion for livetheater into my teaching career. Here in Mineral Point, I have assisted in thedirection of Once Upon A Mattress and Les Miserables, but other memorableproductions that I have been involved with are The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Where'sCharley, and Little Shop of Horrors. Previous to arriving at Mineral Point, I haveassisted in directing middle school productions at my previous school where Iaided in set construction as well as other technical aspects of the plays. When I amnot at school, I enjoy spending time with my wife Nikole, children Gavin andReese, and our dog Blue."Lisa Duwell (Costume, Hair, Make-Up Director) "This is the 9th show I’ve helpedcostume for MPHS. I love getting to know the kids and helping them find theircharacters in their costumes. I firmly believe that theatre experience serves you wellin all aspects of your life. Break a leg, Everyone!"Matt Nevers (Pit Orchestra Director) earned his BME at UW-Platteville in 2002 andhis Master’s Degree in Instrumental Music Education from Vander Cook College ofMusic in 2008. He previously taught band in the Loyal School District beforecoming to Mineral Point in 2005. Mr. Nevers isa 2017 recipient of the Kohl Teacher Fellowship and is a member of NBA, WMEA,NAfME and ASBDA.DIRECTORS' NOTEDisney’s Beauty and the Beast has been a challenging and rewardingexperience! This is Miss McHugh’s fifth and Mr. Smith’s third yeardirecting a high school musical theatre show, and it has been pure joywatching each character and student evolve throughout the season(even on zoom)!Given the overwhelmingly positive response that we received from thecommunity regarding Les Miserables, we knew that it would be a toughshow to follow. Beauty and the Beast has proven to be the exact adventurethat our young actors were looking for, and we can’t think of a bettershow for this year. At its heart, Beauty and the Beast is a story aboutlooking beyond the surface and finding the good in situations and otherpeople, as well as within ourselves. Our actors have risen to thechallenge and have grown incredibly through their performances. Weare very proud of them.Covid-19, just as in every other aspect of our lives, has completelychanged our production process this year. Regardless all of theunknowns and obstacles, we have remained undeterred in offering thisopportunity to our talented and resolute students. From learning newtechnological skills, to deciding between varying mask prototypes, toteaching music and dance virtually, to digitizing fundraisers andcommunications, to researching health protocols and precautions, our directors and volunteers have shown amazing flexibility, creativity, teamwork, and diligence.Though everything about this experience is a little bit different thannormal, the directors team has worked harder than ever to create a showthat both our students and audience will enjoy. We would much ratherperform for a live audience of course, but we know you are with us (inyour thoughts and prayers, and on the live stream), and we thank youfor supporting us. We look forward to returning to live performanceswhen it is safe once again, and we know you will be there with us whenthat time finally comes. On behalf of the cast, crew, directors team, and volunteers, we hope thatyou enjoy this “tale as old as time” as we present our rendition ofDisney’s Beauty and the Beast!Copyright 2021 Playbill Online Inc.
