THE BIBLESection2SCIENCE and HEALTH with Key to the Scriptures6 Psalms 72:18Spirit blesses man, but man cannot “tell whenceit cometh.” By it the sick are healed, the sorrowing are30 comforted, and the sinning are reformed. These are theeffects of one universal God, the invisible good dwellingin eternal Science.7 Exodus 3:11 Moses, 12 (to ;)oses said unto God, Who am I, that I should gounto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forththe children of Israel out of Egypt? 12 Andhe said, Certainly I will be with thee;8 Exodus 4:1–4, 6–8And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they willnot believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for theywill say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee. 2 Andthe Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on theground. And he cast it on the ground, and it becamea serpent; and Moses fled from before it. 4 And theLord said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take itby the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it,and it became a rod in his hand:6 And the Lord said furthermore unto him, Put nowthine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand intohis bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his handwas leprous as snow. 7 And he said, Put thine handinto thy bosom again. And he put his hand into hisbosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 8 And itshall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neitherhearken to the voice of the first sign, that they willbelieve the voice of the latter sign.7 321:8–24Who am I tobe talkingto Pharaoh?OWNW D ODORTH AT RTHPIT UPICK E TAILHBY T9 Ecclesiastes 3:14 (to 2nd :)MANY DIFFERENTkinds of snakes live in Egypt, and most areharmless, but when Moses was talking toPharaoh, snakes, especially poisonous kinds, represented different gods and evil spirits tothe Egyptian people. So Moses’s display had a much deepersignificance than just turning a stick into a snake and back. What makes this story of Mosesinspiring to you? How can youapply it to your own life? When, led by wisdom to cast down hisFear of theserpent9 rod, he saw it become a serpent, Moses fled beovercomefore it; but wisdom bade him come back andhandle the serpent, and then Moses’ fear departed. In12 this incident was seen the actuality of Science. Matterwas shown to be a belief only. The serpent, evil, underwisdom’s bidding, was destroyed through understanding15 divine Science, and this proof was a staff upon which tolean. The illusion of Moses lost its power to alarm him, when he discovered that what he apparently saw was really18 but a phase of mortal belief. It was scientifically demonstrated that leprosy was acreation of mortal mind and not a condition of matter,21 when Moses first put his hand into his bosomLeprosyhealedand drew it forth white as snow with the dreaddisease, and presently restored his hand to its natural con24 dition by the same simple process.8 104:13Christian Science goes to the bottom of mental action, and reveals the theodicy which indicates the rightness of15 all divine action, as the emanation of divinePerfectionof divineMind, and the consequent wrongness of thegovernmentopposite so-called action, — evil, occultism,18 necromancy, mesmerism, animal magnetism, hypnotism.9 252:7I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever:nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it:bade: (past tense of bid) told; instructed;ordered; directeddread: greatly feared; frightful; terribletheodicy: defense of God’s goodness in spite of the apparentreality of eviloccultism: secret practice of magic or other allegedsupernatural powersnecromancy: the practice of attempting to communicatewith the spirits of the deadbestowed: given; granted; afforded; awardedprerogative: special right or privilege; entitlement;advantage; birthrightMary Baker Eddy6 78:28Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who onlydoeth wondrous things.M ANDUR H NICOYPUT OUR TUIN YWhen false human beliefs learn even a little of theirown falsity, they begin to disappear. Thepure joyofrunningBACKGROUND IMAGE: JUPITERIMAGES/PHOTOS.COM/THINKSTOCKIBY SHANE‘ve always loved thepure joy of running. And I discovered my freshman year, asa first-time cross-country runner, thatthis activity came naturally to me.My parents often took me runningaround the foothills of Golden, Colorado, when I was younger. But when I got intohigh school, it seemed like many peopleworried about running injuries. Stress fractures, shin splints—you name it. As a Christian Scientist, I find that it’s a great comfortknowing the truth about my relationshipwith a caring and loving God. Running tome is a strong expression of spiritual qualities, especially freedom and joy. When Itake this to heart, there is no room for common jogging theories and anxieties.Last summer, I began training with mycross-country team for my second season.(The season officially started in August butthe unofficial training began in early May.)But by early June I began to struggle withback trouble. There was pain when I wasdoing common activities such as bendingover or jumping, not to mention running. As fear started to grip me harder, the painonly grew worse. My parents were aware and wantedto make sure that I would get relief soon.Because of many healings my family hadexperienced during my growing-up years, Iwanted to use Christian Science treatmentto handle this problem. That meant that wewould prayerfully reject the false, distortedpicture of an “injured me,” and understandmore about my pure, spiritual identity. Weexpected to see healing results.I tried to remain calm and prayed onand off about it for several weeks, but goodthoughts seemed to be blocked by scarierwe have hiddenan image of a pearl[] somewhere in thepages of mybiblelesson.happy pearl hunting!Pearl Hint: The Christ keeps you from everbeing entombed in material views.thoughts. What Science and Health withKey to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddycalls “error,” or the lie that there’s a powerbigger and more powerful than God, wastrying to escalate my fear with lies like “Thisis a severe condition. What if it can’t behealed through prayer?” or “Maybe it willnever disappear, and you won’t be able torun again.”One night I glanced around my roomand saw my tattered, well-used, little“Words Only” Christian Science Hymnal. Ihad gotten to know this book well since I’dused it to find supportive ideas to pray withduring a very difficult math class the yearbefore. So I immediately turned to my favorite: Hymn 160. The first verse reads:It matters not what be thy lot,So Love doth guide; For storm or shine, pure peaceis thine,Whate’er betide.(Mary Baker Eddy)I love this verse because it says that nomatter what happens, whether you are instorm or shine, you can always feel purepeace because God, Love, is your guide. This, along with a thought from my momthat doing a good activity to express spiritual qualities can’t produce bad results, succeeded not only in calming me downfor that moment, but in blocking all negative thoughts that came my way.By the end of that week, the back trouble was gone. Actually, I’d completely forgotten about it! When bad thoughts andworries crept back into my thinking, I justlaughed to myself and thought, “So silly!”They had no power to take my healingaway. This healing experience helped duringanother problem toward the end of mysophomore running season leading up toour school’s biggest cross-country event.I learned that having a peaceful frame ofmind and a diligent attitude, in practiceand prayer, is so important.During this time, cold symptoms startedto develop, which made it very hard forme to focus on running. Besides the challenge of these symptoms, I didn’t get to runmuch, since I play the drums and also hadto practice and perform with the drumlinefor my school. (I play during the footballgame halftime shows, and also in otherdrumline events.) I wondered if only onecross-country practice that week would besufficient to get me ready for the pre-re-gional meet on Saturday. At the one practice, I only made ithalfway through before sputtering andcoughing. On our way back to the school, Icouldn’t breathe very well and had to walka good way back. This was discouraging because it seemed that I wouldn’t be able torun for the rest of the week. I became afraidI wouldn’t do well in the upcoming meet, and not be ready for the regional meet thenext Friday. This felt like a low point. When I got home, I tried to calm downand thought back to what my mom hadtold me during my back troubles—something like this: “You can’t be hindered whenyou’re doing a good, God-expressed activity.” I knew that drumline required creativityand joy, both of which are God-given qualities. And I realized that since God is omnipotent, there could be no shortage of joy fordrumline and running. I started to look atrunning in a whole new way, as somethingthat should be joyful, not worrisome or irritating. And it also became clear that whileI’m expressing joy, God, it is impossible forme to feel hurt or sick.On the night before the cross-countrymeet, I completed all of the drumline performances, and the next morning it wastime to run. I went into the meet with arenewed feeling of anticipation and excitement, and thought how wonderful it wasgoing to be to run with this new mind-setof jubilation, enjoyment, and delight.I ran the whole meet with no negativethoughts and ended up coming in secondfor my team with a time that was only threeseconds away from my personal best. Thesigns of a cold were completely gone anddidn’t come back. Wow . . . Bliss! The remaining practices gave me opportunitiesto practice this new joyful approach beforethe next big meet.At the regional meet that next Friday, Iran very well, beating my personal best by16 seconds on a difficult course, and I enjoyed the run the whole time.I am very grateful for these healings, and for a new way of thinking that not onlyimproved my running, but my outlook onlife and God.This article was originally published in theJuly 18, 2011 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel. You can find this piece (and thousands more!) atjsh.christianscience.com.PHOTO ATTRIBUTIONS:COVER: Jupiterimages/Creatas/Thinkstock: barnyard, mod.Page 4: Barry Huff: Mount of Temptation, mod.Page 5: Olene Carroll: wayside tombAll nonattributed graphics, photos, and digitally modified images by mBL staff.CHRISTIAN SCIENCE QUARTERLY MYBIBLELESSON 2014 THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE PUBLISHING SOCIETY ANCIENT AND MODERN NECROMANCY, ALIAS MESMERISM AND HYPNOTISM, DENOUNCED 7Visit myBibleLesson.com Nov. 24–30, 2014
