Approved Agency defined in 202:“An established and recognized agency that isregularly engaged in conducting tests orfurnishing inspection services, where suchagency has been approved by the buildingofficial.”79Who Hires a Special Inspector? 1704.2:“ the owner or the owner’s authorized agent, other than the contractor,shall employ one or more approved agencies to provide special inspectionsand tests during construction on the types of work specified in Section1705.” Exception #4:“The contractor is permitted to employ the approved agencies where thecontractor is also the owner. “ Exception #5: (CT Addition)“The contractor is permitted to employ the approved agencies for theverification of the temporary installation restraint/bracing.”80Qualifications of a Special Inspector81OEDM- Fall 2018 Career Development27

Thisaccreditation process involves an assessment of the agenciescompetence for performing inspections and the consistency of theirinspection activities. IAS accredits agencies that perform inspections ofmaterials, products, installations, processes or services.82Qualifications of Testing AgenciesTesting LaboratoriesISO/IEC Standard 17025AC89 IAS accredits testing laboratories to ISO/IEC Standard 17025 andindustry specific standards.
