Dunkin and DJ Pettitdecided to retire from the cattlebusiness and close their ranching operationRafter D Corporation. At that time, BufordRanches, LLC, was fortunate to acquirethe cow herd and bull battery in its entirety from Rafter D as well as lease DunkinRanch from DJ Pettit and Jane Dunkin.Thus, Buford Ranches, LLC, ownedequally by DJ’s three children, Stephen Buford, Sam Bufordand Sharon BufordLinsenmeyer, wasable to continue thefamily tradition ofranching in OsageCounty, which began in 1941. OnDecember 12, 1941,our grandparents,Jane and John D.Dunkin, completedthe purchase of theCraddock Ranchwest of Hominy. With the help of Ray andFern Buck, they operated the Double Rafter Ranch until John H. Dunkin’s death inJune 1958. Jane assumed the managementof the ranch, formed the Rafter D Corporation with her children, John R. and DJ andsteadfastly continued to look to Ray Buckfor guidance.In 1968, John R. Dunkin assumedmanagement gradually improved the quality of the cow herd, which originally wasa set of straight-bred Hereford cows purchased from the Mabee Ranch in 1942.Crossbreeding was introduced in the 1960s.Angus bulls were the first new breed introduced, followed by Limousin bulls in themid-1970s.Buford Ranches, LLC, has kept thesame three bloodlines and crossbreedingrotation in its program, earning thestate and national2000LimousinCommercial Producer of the Year.With the help ofour father, Daniel S. Buford, theranch has been expanding at a rapidpace.The Dillingham Ranch inOkmulgee Countywas purchased in 1997. 2017Competing Team from Pawhuska, Okla.drummond Land Cattle&Drummond Land and Cattle wasformed as a partnership betweenChuck, Tim and Ladd Drummondin the early 90’s and today is owned andoperated by Tim and Ladd Drummond.DL&C is involved with all segments ofthe cattle industry, from cow/calf, stocker/feeders and occasionally a fed a few cattle infeedyards. The Drummond Land & Cattleheadquarter is based in Pawhuska, Okla.,which is Osage County; the operation partnership also runs cattle in Kansas. Tim andLadd have their own operations as well,which includes cow/calf, stocker, feedersand developing heifers for replacements.In addition to the ranch cattle operations, Drummond Land and Cattle alsohave a horse operation, which consist ofranch raised Quarter Horses that are usedfor everyday ranch duties. The horse operation is heavily involved in the NationalCutting Horse Association (NCHA) andparticipates in the cutting competitions,which have earned the ranch many titles.Tim and Ladd are the fourth generation of Drummond’s to the ranch in Osagecounty with fifth generation waiting in thewings. 2017Competing Team from Comanche & Ardmore, Okla.Hall Ranch Daube Cattle Co.&THall Ranchhe Hall Ranch tradition goesback to the late 1800’s and engulfs the ranching history andheritage of three states. Shannon’s grandfather and father punched cowson some of the largest ranches in the stateof Texas. Ronda’s great, great, great, greatgrandfather John Blunk homesteaded in1860 in Barber County, Kansas and WoodsCounty, Oklahoma. The John Blunk Ranchencompassed 20,000 acres, running Hereford cattle and hosting some rather historical guests, such as Jesse James. The BlunkRanch is now operated by Ronda’s dad andbrother. When God brought Shannon andRonda together, he directed them to Oklahoma.Shannon pursued a career as a horsetrainer. Through hard work and God-giventalents, and blessings, his dream of owninghis own ranch became a reality. The HallRanch first began with 250 acres in GradyCounty. In 2000, they purchased the Stardust Ranch in Stephens County and haveadded numerous leases. The ranch consistsof 700 cows and runs approximately 5,000to 6,000 yearlings through the operationwithin a year. Yearlings are used for horsetraining, as well as for weight gain. Along with brother,Dave, and a school friend, Max Westheimer, the firm of Westheimer and Daubewas launched in 1894, where area farmersand ranchers bought, bartered or tradedanything from a dozen eggs to a carloadof cattle. When the firm was dissolved in1937, the Daube brothers continued withthe high tradition that had set their establishment apart in this section of the state.Sam helped pioneer commercial Hereford breeding in the early 1900s and thebreed is the mainstay of the herd today.After Sam’s death in 1946, his son, LeonDaube, continued to uphold his high ranching standards. Soon after the death of Leonin 1958, son Sam Daube took over. The Lazy Rafter Slash is a stocker operation runningcattle in Oklahoma and Kansas. They background most of their stockers at the Lenapah ranch with the help of their children.The Gagan’s also run a cow/calf operation.In 2006, BJN Cattle was formed whenBurr partnered with a couple local ranchers, Jim Folk and Neal Kottke. BJN Cattlerun yearlings in Oklahoma, Kansas, andTexas. In 2011, they bought the ParkerRanch in Chouteau, Oklahoma where theyprecondition yearlings and run about 1,000momma cows. BJ Kester, his wife Misty andson Luke live on the Parker Ranch at Chouteau where BJ takes care of the cow calf operation. In 2014, they bought the ScudderRanch in Dewey and made it their yearlingheadquarters.The Lazy Rafter Slash is truly a familybusiness. Burr and Theresia have five children and three grandsons. He was a rancher nearKennedy, Indian Territory and Finley, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) until his deathin 1937. In 1894 my Great Grand FatherRaymond Tucker was born in Indian Territory and ranched his entire life north ofFinley, OK.From 1949 until his death in 1985,my grand-father, Ray Tucker operated hisranch north of Finley, Oklahoma which heincreased from the acreage inherited fromhis father to 15,000 acres. Grandpa Ray wasOklahoma State FFA President in the late1940’s and in 1960 was elected by the Oklahoma House of Representatives to help stopthe closing of open range. The Angus cattle better suited Bob’svision of producing better beef for the feedlot. Bob’s vision bolstered the growth ofthe ranch that encompasses approximately20,000 acres located along State Highway60 in Craig and Nowata Counties betweenVinita, Okla. and Nowata, Okla. Bob’s sonClay is now in charge and continues the vision of raising Angus cattle the grow, gainand grade.Spur Ranch has a 1,200 head registeredAngus herd and a 1,000 head commercialAngus herd that directs its focus on calving ease and carcass genetics. After acquiring his first lease in2001, there were many more to come andso began a big start in the cattle business. In2007 at the age of 27, he leased over 50,000acres in Oklahoma and South Central Kansas turning out over 10,000 head of customgraze yearlings to grass and owned interestin over 1,000 mother cows and bred heifers. In 2010, he purchased a piece of theGraham Ranch in Western Osage County,Oklahoma where they have homesteadedand has built a starting/grow yard wherethey precondition over 10,000 head annually.Also, through a separate partnershipwith B-M Cattle Company, also known asJoplin Regional Stockyards, they turn outand graze a number of yearlings and momma cows together. Shane also works as afield representative for the Joplin RegionalStockyards in livestock marketing, selling, and order buying. Shane is involved inmany different things that involve the cattleindustry. He is presently setting as currentofficer and President of the Osage CountyCattleman’s Association.On January 1, 2016 Shane marriedJenna Adams Stierwalt from Fort Pierce,Florida. 2017Competing Team from Waurika, Okla.Stuart RanchIn 1868, Robert Clay Freeny left BoggyDepot, Indian Territory to settle onthe “Redlands” on what is today theAtoka/Bryan county line, north andeast of Caddo Oklahoma. This countrywould become the future headquarters forthe Stuart Ranch, which has now growninto a diversified operation spanning fourcounties in the great state of Oklahoma.The headquarters today is in JeffersonCounty, near Waurika Oklahoma.The ranch operates a commercial cowherd comprised of Hereford and BlackBaldys and runs yearlings on wheat.In 1949, Bob Stuart began to upgradethe horses on the ranch with the purchaseof Big Shot Dun from the Waggoner Ranch.Son O Leo and Port Command crossedback on the Big Shot Dun and Breezy Buckmares laid a solid foundation for the broodmare band. 2017Competing Team from Frederick & Snyder, Okla.Treadwell Land Cattleand McPhail LandCattle&&Treadwell Land & CattleTreadwell Land and Cattle wasformed by the late Elbert E. “Buddy” and Micah Buchanan Treadwell.Their families came to Kiowa and Comanche counties in 1901 and soon after. Theymarried in June of 1979 and began farming and ranching near Frederick in TillmanCounty. The following April, Micah became the Tillman County OSU ExtensionAgent.The primary operation includes wheat,cattle, cotton and forage for silage. Farmand pasture land is both owned and leasedin Kiowa, Comanche and Tillman Counties. Several years ago Buddy could seeopportunity in running cattle on summergrasses, places away from the parched areaaround Frederick. That vision has nowgrown; summer grasses are grazed in eastern Kansas along the beautiful flint hills, insouthwestern Kansas, and other Oklahomalocations. Ethan met Jess Kane, Bartlesville, attending the Oklahoma Cattlemen’sLeadership Academy. That friendship hascreated opportunities for both families. Wepartner with Jess and his brother Richardrunning stockers on their family ranch,homesteaded near Coldwater Kansas andalso partner with cattle in northeasternOklahoma. We graze our own winterwheat and also graze wheat across southwest Oklahoma.Micah retired from Extension in 2012,a year after Buddy’s sudden and untimelydeath from kidney cancer. She and sonEthan manage the operation. DaughterPaige and husband Derek Jacobs partnerwith us farming some of the irrigated landand hauling an occasional load of cattle.Derek is our “cotton and hay specialist”,but he and Paige manage their own farming and ranching business. Micah andEthan have grown the operation by addingland, increasing stocker numbers and haveadded a 600 head cow herd. They vow topreserve and maintain Buddy’s vision ofTreadwell Land and Cattle and his love offarming and ranching.Buddy and Dallas McPhail were childhood friends growing up near MountainPark in Kiowa County. The three participated inOklahoma High School Rodeo as team ropers and have maintained a close friendshipinherited from their dads.McPhail Land & CattleMcPhail Land & Cattle wasestablished in 2004 by brothers Dayton McPhail and DillonMcPhail. Their family has been farmingand ranching in Kiowa County, Oklahomafor over five generations. Dayton andDillon have worked for their father DallasMcPhail on the family farm since theywere old enough to straddle a horse. Aftergraduating from high school, Dayton andDillon got offered to lease eight hundredacres of land. This was an opportunity theycouldn’t turn down. Not only would thisbe the start of McPhail Land & Cattle, butit would also be beneficial for their entirefamily’s farming and ranching operation.With the earnings from their first year’scrop Dayton and Dillon purchased theirfirst cow herd. Over the years McPhailLand & Cattle, in partners with their fatherDallas, has grown by purchasing andleasing land in both Kiowa and Tillmancounties. 2017Competing Team from Delaware, Okla.Whitemire RanchThe Whitmire Bar W Ranches areowned by M.G. “Whit” & Florence Whitmire. M.G. “Whit”Whitmire was born and raisedon a small cotton farm in West Texas. Hisfamily scratched out a very meager livingraising cotton. There were several smallranches in the area, and to Whit, they wereat the top of the social and economic ladder. Whit’s life long dream was to own acattle ranch.After graduating from Texas Tech in1953, Whit served two years in the Armyand then worked as a Geologist/Geophysicist for Texaco until he started Bandera Petroleum Inc. in 1985.In 1999, he was finally able to buy hisfirst ranch West of Nowata, ok. It was referred to as the “Home Ranch”. In the following years he purchased several otherranches. He now owns nearly 20,000 acresin Nowata and Washington Counties. Theheadquarters is in Lenapah, Ok. They runapproximately 2100 momma cows, 450replacement heifers, and 120 head of herdbulls.Florence, “Flo” Whitmire is an artistfrom New York City and grew up ridingstable horses on the beach in Brooklyn. Sheenjoys ranch life and cooking for the cowboys.T.J. Mills is foreman over all of the BarW Ranches. He grew up on the MullendoreCross Bell Ranch in Copan, Ok.
