Volume 127, Issue 2February 2020Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26th, and at 6:30PMwe plan to have delicious soup, followed by our 7:30PM servicewhich officially brings us into the Season of Lent!During the Season of Lent, we are called to focus on ourpersonal spiritual growth, and to exercise our capacity to showlove and kindness to the wider world. To help us along thejourney, all are welcome to grab a free Lenten prayer card fromthe Prayer Room. In addition, we will have discussions based onour Lenten devotional books at our bible study classes. In worship, our Lenten journey will tell of the Hebrew people going out of Egypt andinto a promised new land, and will focus on their journey, Jesus’ journey, and ourjourney of discipleship today. As the worship experience will remind us that we seek tohave a deeper relationship with God, and a greater understanding of our faith.Worship during Lent also tells of both the ordinary and unexpected people of the biblewho are like us, to teach us that the story of God’s unconditional love continues. Asthere are people like Peter who have denied Jesus; people like Paul who were oncepersecutors of Jesus’ disciples; people like Ananias who gave the gift of healing andreconciliation; and people like Tabitha who cared for others.Lent reminds us that individuals such as these, and the small community of Jesus’followers after the Resurrection, were the beginning of the worldwide church we knowtoday. And it should not be doubted that a group of small people, even one person, canmake a significant impact on the world.Let us pray this Lenten prayer: ‘O God, you give me new life through your Son. May Iseek you with an undivided heart, and grow day by day in your likeness.’ Amen. With God’s Love,Pastor Sheila

Du Bois' TheSouls of Black Folk (1903), which is a seminalwork in African American literature and anAmerican classic. In this work, Du Bois proposesthat "the problem of the Twentieth Century is theproblem of the color-line." His concepts of lifebehind the veil of race and the resulting "doubleconsciousness, this sense of always looking atone's self through the eyes of others," havebecome touchstones for thinking about race inAmerica. In addition to these enduringconcepts, Souls offers an assessment of theprogress of the race, the obstacles to thatprogress, and the possibilities for future progressas the nation entered the twentieth century.YOGAYoga is held Tuesdays at 5:00PM.During February, Yoga will be heldeach Tuesday at 5:00pm exceptFebruary 18th. Our next Missionevent will be CWS Blanket & Tools Sundaycoming up on Feb 23rd. The scripture is takenfrom Hebrews 13:6, “.And don't forget to dogood & share with those in need.” This offeringprovides blankets and kits to families impacted byhurricanes, tornadoes, flooding and other crises(including homelessness and poverty). We willalso have our first Mission & Outreach meeting ofthe year on Feb 23rd after fellowship.Lets continue to strive for more; more love, moregrace, more patience, more peace, more of God!The year 2020 offers us another chance to strivefor more & to be more like Christ, daily! We’re ona ‘Mission’!Thank you Union Congregational for supporting usas we make every effort to reach our missiongoals!God Bless,Rosemarie Lightfoot - ChairpersonFAMILY PROMISETHANK YOU to everyonewho helped out with ourDecember Family Promiseweek! Helping the homeless families isone of the many blessings of our church.MODERATOR MESSAGEIt's already February & it's alsoBlackHistory month! We got off to anamazing start by sponsoring theEbony Chorale in concert. Everyvoice was lifted in song in remembrance of howfar we have come as a people & how much fartherwe have to go. Thank you WAMM & Bryan Ijamesfor putting these musical series’ events together. As we know, there's a lot happening in this worldtoday & quite a few injustices that can make youwonder where God is & why He’s not fixing it. Andyet, no matter what’s going on around us, we asChristians must remain faithful & believe that Godwill 'deliver us from evil.’ So, we must“Do everything without complaining Live .as children of God, shining like bright lights in aworld of crooked and perverse people.” Philippians 2:1\4-15.As Pastor Sheila reminded us in her sermon lastSunday, as a church we must be the lighthouseon the corner that is a welcoming beacon to thosewho are seeking shelter from the storms of thisworld. It reminded me that no matter what’s goingon in my life, my lamp has to stay lit, & I can't let itburn out. We have to keep studying the Word, keep praying, keep pressing toward the upwardcalling of God & never give up. Our light has tocontinually shine so that others will be drawn toChrist through us.Union, let us continue to strive to be the churchthat God has called us to be.God Bless, Rosemarie Lightfoot ModeratorPER CAPITAAs part of being a church within theUnited Church of Christ denominationmeans paying our PER CAPITA ‘dues’.Per Capita is asked of each church inour Florida Conference to help defray the costs ofoperating our Conference ministry. Basically, weare asked to pay 15 for each member of thechurch. This year the total Per Capita due fromUnion will be approximately 2116. It woulddefinitely help our finances if each member couldpay their own 15 Per Capita dues. Just label yourdonation ‘Per Capita’ and the money will godirectly to pay your member dues to ourConference. If you financially cannot afford the full 15 right now, that is fine. Contribute what youcan toward the dues. Every bit helps us meet ourbudget goals for the year. Blessings andGratitude, Your Trustee Team

During worship, on the first Sunday in January, the children shared their vision for2020. They included: a place where there's more kindness, where people aretreated fairly and People can live in peace. We celebrated MLK Sunday with our Guest Rhythm Weavers Drummer,Buckley Griffis who led the kids in a drumming circle. Helping us rememberDr. King was a Drumming Major for Justice.
