6LICENSING INFORMATIONLICENSING INFORMATIONRead on to learn how Maine law defines the major hunting license types, what they allow, and how to obtain one.WHO NEEDS A LICENSE?In general, anyone who hunts wild birds oranimals in Maine needs a hunting license.The type of license you need depends uponyour age, resident status, and other factors,and there are some exceptions. See thecharts on pages 8 and 9 for all availablehunting licenses and fees.In addition to a license, most huntingactivities also require a permit. See individual species pages for details.Junior and Adult Hunters: Huntersunder age 16 must possess a junior license,and those 16 and up need an adult license.Note: a junior license holder who turns 16may hunt with that junior license for theremainder of the calendar year.Exception for Assisting in a Hunt:A person may assist in a hunt without alicense or permit for that activity, as longas they do not carry hunting equipment(means to kill) or drive deer.Landowner Privilege: Maine residentlandowners and their immediate familymembers may hunt without a licenseusing firearms, archery, crossbow ormuzzleloader on land they own and resideupon, provided the land exceeds 10 acresin size and is used exclusively for agricultural purposes. The landowner privilegeis not available to hunters with revokedor suspended licenses, and does not applyto moose hunting, for which a license isstill required. See page 23 for informationabout landowner privilege for turkeyhunting.KEEP YOUR LICENSE WITH YOUYou are required to keep an electronicand/or paper copy of your huntinglicense and any necessary permitswith you while hunting or transporting wild birds and wild animals and,if requested to do so, must present itfor inspection to any warden, law enforcement officer, MDIFW employee,guide or landowner upon whose landyou are hunting.WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?HOW ARE LICENSES OBTAINED?Firearms Licenses: When applying for anadult firearms hunting license in Maine,you must show proof of residency, andthat you have either possessed an adultlicense to hunt with firearms in any prioryear beginning with 1976, or successfullycompleted an approved hunter safetycourse in any U.S. state, province or country. Convicted felons cannot purchase orpossess a firearms hunting license in Maineunless they have been issued a permit tocarry a firearm.From Agents: Licenses can also be purchased from agents throughout the state(sporting good stores, many conveniencestores, town clerks, and turnpike servicecenters). Agents who process applicationsonline for moose and antlerless deer permitsmay charge a fee of 2.00.To obtain a hunting license in Maine, yougenerally need to show that you have either(1) held that license in a prior year, or (2)taken a hunter safety course. License-specific requirements and exceptions follow.Archery Licenses: To obtain an adultarchery hunting license, you must showproof of having held an adult license tohunt with bow and arrow in any yearafter 1979, or successful completion of anarchery education course.From MDIFW: Residents and non-residentsmay obtain hunting licenses from theMDIFW office in Augusta, either in person,online at mainefishwildlife.com, or (fornon-residents) by mail.Note: Not all town clerks issue non-residentlicenses.All trapping licenses are issued by theMDIFW office in Augusta and cannot bepurchased online.It is unlawful to obtain a license or permitthrough misstatement or misrepresentation, or to possess a license or permit thathas been altered or tampered with in anyway.Exceptions to Safety Course RequirementNative American Exception: NativeAmericans are exempt from the safetycourse requirement for archery, crossbow,and trapping.Military Exception: An active-dutymember of the U.S. Armed Forces who ispermanently stationed outside of the U.S.and home on leave is exempt from hunter,archery, and crossbow safety course requirements if they can show proof at timeof license application that their home stateof record is Maine.DEFINITIONSRESIDENT means a citizen of theUnited States or a person who is nota citizen of the United States whohas been domiciled in the State forone year who: has registered in Maine any motorvehicles they own that are locatedwithin the state; if registered to vote, is registeredin this State; is a full-time student at a Mainecollege or university who satisfiesabove requirements. if licensed to drive a motorvehicle, has made application foror possesses a motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State;2 0 1 9 - 2 0 S TAT E O F M A I N E S U M M A R Y O F L AW S & R U L E S H U N T I N G is in compliance with the stateincome tax laws;NONRESIDENT means a personwho does not fall within thedefinition of a resident.Q U E STI O N S?
