NAB.005.235.0068All about Top 200Top 200’s investment objectiveIndices have been around for a long time. Indices specific tothe share market measure performance of the overall marketor sector(s) of the market, over time. For example,a share market index is a sample basket of shares thatrepresents the change in value of the market as a whole, inmuch the same way that inflation is measured by comparingthe cost of a basket of goods over time.Top 200 is designed to deliver returns as close aspossible to that of the index of Australia’s top 200 listedcompanies, the S&P/ASX 2003 Accumulation Index (‘Index’).The Index is based on returns (pre tax and fees), and takesinto account the reinvestment of income. The Index includes companies across all major industrysectors and represents approximately 78% of the totalAustralian share market value, as at 29 February 2008.How we invest in the share marketTop 200 currently invests in an underlying registered scheme, which is managed by Colonial First State Investments Limited(‘Asset Manager’).The Asset Manager uses detailed risk analysis to design andmanage a portfolio of shares to achieve Top 200’sinvestment objective. All shares in the underlying fund aremaintained within a close margin to their actual proportion inthe Index. The underlying fund mainly invests in Australianshares and cash as follows:Asset allocationRangeBenchmarkAustralian shares95 – 100%100%0 – 5%0%(note 1)CashNote 1 A reference to Australian shares or companies may includeunits in trusts and/or investments in companies listed on anoverseas stock exchange if they are also listed on the ASX.3S&P/ASX 200 refers to Standard & Poor’s S&P/ASX 200 AccumulationIndex, and ASX denotes the Australian Stock Exchange.2

NAB.005.235.0069How doesTop 200 compareto other funds? Many funds that invest in shares are actively managed.Active fund managers hope to outperform major marketsby trying to pick the outperforming shares within relativelyshort-term periods. This may involve a higher volume oftransactions and associated costs although there is noguarantee of superior investment performance. By doing so,actively managed funds typically have higher managementcosts than index managed funds. The Asset Manager uses an index management approachto deliver returns as close as possible to thatof the Index. This is generally associated with a lower volumeof transactions. As a result, management costs of indexfunds are typically lower than actively managed funds.PerformanceEach quarter, we will provide you with a report showinghow your investment has performed. You will also beable to access the latest Top 200 unit price attop200shares.com.au or by calling Top 200Client Services on 1300 723 832.Top 200 has received a compound annual return of 13.46%from inception (17 October 2005) to 29 February 2008.For the same period the Index has achieved a compoundannual return of 14.76%.The graph on the next page illustrates 10 years of returnsfor the Index (to 29 February 2008). The Index hasachieved a compound annual return of 11.79% over this10 year period. During this period there have been two yearswith a negative return. While Top 200 is designed to deliver returns as close aspossible to that of the Index, past performance of the Indexand Top 200 is not necessarily indicative of the futureperformance of the Index and Top 200. In particular itshould be noted that periods of volatility such as the marketis experiencing at the date of this PDS, may significantly3

NAB.005.235.0070impact the performance of the Index and Top 200. NAB.005.235.0072Things tothink aboutbefore investingBefore investing in Top 200, take the time to think aboutyour needs, financial situation, your timeframe forinvestment and how you feel about risk.Investing in shares isa longer term commitmentTop 200 is aimed at investors who want the benefits ofinvesting in the Australian share market, who canaccommodate short-term fluctuations (including thepossibility of negative returns) and who are investing overthe longer term. The minimum recommended investmentperiod is 5 to 6 years.Your comfort with riskAny investment decision involves taking risks of some sort.It is important to understand the relationship between riskand return, especially in light of the timeframe you areconsidering for your investment. As a general rule, the higher the level of risk associatedwith an investment, the higher the potential return will be,though the chance of incurring a loss will also be greater.Historically, over the longer term, shares provide higherreturns (and therefore risk) than most other asset classes.A commonly used measure of investment risk is volatility. This refers to the tendency of investment values tofluctuate. This volatility can apply to both the market priceand the income of a particular investment. So, the value ofyour investment may go up or down, and you may not getback the full amount that you invested. Please be awarethat your investment is not guaranteed.6

NAB.005.235.0073More information about riskThe investment processes used by our Asset Managerare designed to ensure that risks are managed ona number of levels. Investors should be aware that thereare a number of risks associated with this type ofinvestment. We have summarised 4 key risks as follows: Market risk The risk of negative events occurring thataffect the investments in a particular market, forexample, the level of interest rates, investor confidence, political and world events,Legislation risk The risk of government changes inlegislation and taxation, which may influence the valueof your investment,Management risk The risk that the Asset Managermay not perform to expectation, andFund risk The specific risks associated with Top 200and the underlying fund, including the risk that thosefunds could terminate or that the responsible entity ofthose funds could be changed.Top 200 investmentapproachA disciplined
