IntroductionMidwifery, with its woman-centered focus and emphasis on respectful care, becomes anintegral part of comprehensive quality maternity services. Studies (Cochrane Databaseof Systematic Reviews 2016) revealed that women who received midwifery care andsupport were less likely to experience interventions and more likely to be satisfied withtheir care. The Cochrane Review also showed significantly higher rates of spontaneousvaginal deliveries, lowered C-section rates and lowered risk for neonatal intensive care.The need for professional midwives in maternity services is being recognized on a globallevel. India urgently needs professional midwives. With this background, the INC hasintroduced the Post Basic Diploma in Nurse Practitioner in Midwifery.Scope of PracticeThe Nurse Practitioner in Midwifery will focus on pregnancy, labour and birth includingcare of the newborn.These Nurse Practitioners in Midwifery will care for low risk pregnant women. During theantenatal period they offer advice on nutrition, physical exercise and physical activitiesand educate the couple on labour and birth.Nurse Practitioners in Midwifery provide primary care to childbearing women in a varietyof In-Patient and Out-Patient settings including hospitals and birth centres. The program mainly focuses on Competency-based education and trainingfacilitated by mastery and experiential learning centered around transformational andrelationship-based teaching and learning integrating Council’s/global educationaland midwifery practice standards.
