IntroductionFor over 135 years, Johnson Controls has raised thebar of chiller design and customer expectations. We areraising the bar again with a leap forward in air-cooledchiller technology. Continuing the history of innovation inboth compressor design and Variable Speed Drive (VSD)technology, Johnson Controls proudly introduces theYORK YVAA.In the past, the choice to use an air-cooled chiller camewith the expectation of compromise, where simplicity ofdesign and maintenance were traded for performanceand efficiency. The new YVAA provides a better balanceby combining the best of both - a high performance designthat minimizes the total cost of ownership.YORK YVAA model air-cooled chillers provide superiorperformance. Higher efficiency heat exchangers coupledwith variable speed operation and smart controls elevatethe system efficiency to a whole new level. The resultingbenefit from YVAA chillers is much greater than the sumof its parts.Efficiency: Reduce your consumptionYVAA chillers are Johnson Controls’ most efficient aircooled chillers. The design offers a lighter, smaller andquieter package that minimizes the installed cost andmaximizes usable building space. YVAA chillers are simplerin design with easy access to service components forreliable operation and efficient maintenance. With up to a40% improvement in real world efficiency versus currentproducts, YVAA sets the new standards for lowering energyuse.JOHNSON CONTROLSFORM 201.28-EG1.EN.PED/CE (1111)Sustainability: Improve your environmental footprintYVAA lowers both direct and indirect impact on theenvironment. It uses R134a refrigerant which has zeroozone depletion potential (ODP). The design minimizesthe quantity of refrigerant used in the system. The highest portion of green house gases is carbon dioxidegenerated from electric power plants. HVAC systems areone of the largest consumers of electricity in commercialbuildings. YVAA chillers reduce the electricity usage, thereby contributing to reducing greenhouse gases andhelping keep the planet cool.Low Sound: Quiet operation makes you a goodneighbourThe variable speed technology on YVAA allows unparalleledlow sound levels at off peak design conditions. Thismakes YVAA a great solution for sound sensitive zones.Several acoustic attenuation options with smart controls(SilentNight ), aerodynamic fans and effective soundenclosures will meet the sound levels required.Confidence: Proven performance provides peace ofmindYVAA design is proven by years of success with theprevious generation of VSD air-cooled screw chillers withthousands of machines operating in more than one hundredcountries.YVAA is configurable to be the perfect fit for your uniqueneeds. YVAA offers an array of options that can be tailoredand tuned to match the capacity, efficiency, sound andfootprint for your specific application. Several variationsof condenser fans, evaporator arrangements, sound kits, protection enclosures, and controls schemes are availableto meet specific requirements for your site.3

FORM 201.28-EG1.EN.PED/CE (1111)RatingsCOMPUTERIZED PERFORMANCE RATINGSOFF-DESIGN PERFORMANCEEach chiller is custom-matched to meet the individualbuilding load and energy requirements. A variety ofstandard heat exchangers and pass arrangements areavailable to provide the best possible match.Since the vast majority of its operating hours are spent atoff-design conditions, a chiller should be chosen not only tomeet the full load design, but also for its ability to performefficiently at lower loads. It is not uncommon for chillerswith the same full load kW/kW to have an operating costdifference of over 10% due to part-load operation. It is not practical to provide tabulated performance for eachcombination, as the energy requirements at both full andpart load vary significantly with each heat exchanger andpass arrangement. Computerized ratings are availablethrough each Johnson Controls sales office.Part load information can be easily and accuratelygenerated by use of the computer. And because it is soimportant to an owner’s operating budget, this informationhas now been standardized.A more detailed analysis must take into account actualbuilding load profiles, and local weather data. Part loadperformance data should be obtained for each job usingits own design criteria.Product DescriptionYVAA air-cooled chillers are completely assembled withall interconnecting refrigerant piping and internal wiring, ready for field installation. The unit is pressure tested, evacuated, and fully factory charged with refrigerantR134a and oil in each of the independent refrigerantcircuits. MicroComputer Control CenterFORM 201.28-EG1.EN.PED/CE (1111)FIG.1 – VIEW OF YORK CONTROL CENTER USER INTERFACEMICROCOMPUTER CONTROL CENTERThe microcomputer control center (see Figure 1) providesautomatic control of chiller operation including compressorstart/ stop and load/unload anti-recycle timers, condenserfans, evaporator pump, evaporator heater, unit alarmcontacts and run signal contacts. The microcomputercontrol center comes online as soon as the main powerswitch on the unit is switched on; immediately, themicrocomputer control center will begin to check allvariables with a frequency ranging from 30 seconds toalmost continuous monitoring. The microprocessor controls the unit’s capacity bymatching the actual leaving chilled liquid temperature(LCHLT) to the user-defined setpoint. Factors that maycause the system’s actual LCHLT to fluctuate are changesin ambient temperature, loop flow rate, load, and loopvolume. The control system reacts to such changes byadjusting the number of compressors that are on and theloading of each compressor in order to keep the LCHLTat the setpoint. The control system logic monitors the rate at which theLCHLT is approaching the setpoint to ramp up or downcompressor capacity as required. The variable frequencydrive allows the compressor capacity to match the load.Display Data Leaving Chilled Liquid Temperature Returning Liquid Temperature Ambient Temperature Lead System Compressor Capacity (% of Full Load Amps) VSD Output Frequency / Compressor Speed Compressor Run Hours Compressor Number of Starts Oil Pressure and Temperature (per Compressor)6 Evaporator Pump StatusEvaporator Heater StatusHistory Data for Last Twenty Normal ShutdownsHistory Data for Last Ten Shutdown FaultsProgrammable Setpoints Chiller On/Off Chilled Liquid (Water or Glycol) Local or Remote Control Units of Measure (Imperial or SI) System Lead / Lag Remote Temperature Reset Remote Current Limit Leaving Chilled Liquid Temperature Setpoint andRangeJohnson Controls’ systems or another vendor’s systemscan incorporate these setpoints and data outputs to givethe customer a complete understanding of how the systemis running through a Building Automation System.Extreme Conditions - During extreme or unusualconditions (i.e. blocked condenser coils, ambient abovescheduled maximum, etc.) the chiller control system willavoid shutdown by varying capacity. By monitoring motorcurrent and suction and discharge pressures, the chillercan maintain maximum available cooling output withoutshutting down.Unit Safeties are provided for the chiller to perform autoreset shut down for the following conditions: Ambient temperature above or below allowable range Out of range leaving chilled liquid temperature Under voltage Flow switch operationJOHNSON CONTROLS
