EDITORIALDear Friends,The year 2020 has finally ended and we have entered 2021 with hopes and prayersof peace and health for the entire world. At the dawn of the new year, we asked ourmembers to share their positive takeaways, if any, from the last year. Their feedbackswere heartening as presented in this newsletter.We, at the GDA, continued our progress unabated through this tumultuous year ofCOVID-19. Our Board of Directors met to review the year’s progress and plan for theforeseeable future. We added four new episodes to our popular ongoing series “GDAConversations” with KPMG, Ingenero, ASTM and Shell. We conducted three virtualcourses for our members in collaboration with AspenTech, ASTM and Honeywell-UOP.We represented GDA as panelist, part of committee, exhibitor or a delegate in severalvirtual events around the GCC and beyond, such as: India Energy Forum 2020 byCERAWEEK (IHS Markit), LEWAS 2020, MENA Energy 2020, World Petroleum Council’sSpanish roundtable (Impact of COVID-19 on worldwide refining industry), ADIPEC2020, and MPGC.RAJ JHAJHARIATechnical Manager andActing Marketing &Communications ManagerOur Technical Committees also continued meeting virtually on a regular basis at frequentintervals sharing great value-based knowledge and adding significant deliverables to the GDA KnowledgeHub. We kept our in-house team updated with our very own team webinars on the important topics of Risk,Health, Safety, and Environment. Our unique cross-company mentoring program is progressing smoothly asevidenced by a success story shared by a KPC mentor and a ADNOC Refining mentee.Two Technical Committees – “Leadership & People Development” and “Project Management” have joinedhands to produce GDA’s first ‘free-to-attend’ virtual event “TRANSFORM” on 22nd - 23rd February 2021 as aprelude to our signature event “GDA Conference 2021” on 14th - 16th September 2021. We say a big “ThankYou” to all our Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Single Point of Contacts (SPOCs) who steadfastly continueto support us in the unique journey of knowledge-sharing. NEWSVIRTUAL COURSESD5002-19 STANDARD TEST METHOD FOR DENSITY,RELATIVE DENSITY, AND API GRAVITY OF CRUDEOILS BY DIGITAL DENSITY ANALYZERThe Gulf Downstream Association (GDA) organized thesecond virtual training course on the 16th – 17th November2020 in collaboration with its Knowledge Partner “ASTMInternational”. It was a two - day training for eleven (11)Aramco, BAPCO and SATORP employees on “D5002-19Standard Test Method for Density, Relative Density, AndAPI Gravity of Crude Oils by Digital Density Analyzer”.The course, which was hosted and delivered by Dr.Mohammad Arab & Mr. Mohamed Musa was designedto provide the knowledge about test method that coversMr. Mohamed Musa & Dr. Mohammad Arabthe determination of the density, relative density, andDelegates were able to strengthen their knowledge basefashion as liquids at test temperatures between 15 Ctheir knowledge to fully utilize automatic instrumentsinjection equipment. This test method applies to crudefocus for day-to-day work of lab personnel. Delegatesprecautions are taken to prevent loss during transfer ofmany labs and benefited from the finer details of the testbackground from Laboratory Technicians, Laboratoryby studying precision and bias of the ASTM test method.API gravity of crude oils that may be handled in a normalbased on actual ASTM test procedures and reinforceand 35 C utilizing either manual or automated samplewith increased usage of automated lab equipment andoils with high vapour pressures provided appropriatewere provided with the advantages of collective work ofthe sample to the density analyzer. NEWSGDA IN ADIPEC VIRTUAL 2020Held under the patronage of the President HisHighness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan,ADIPEC, hosted by ADNOC, was held virtually from9th - 10th November 2020 to adhere to Abu Dhabi’scoordinated COVID-19 response.ADIPEC provided a virtual platform that gave theenergy community a chance to meet virtually andidentify the potential opportunities ahead for theenergy sector.GDA took the role of a supporting organisationduring this year’s ADIPEC. Our former SecretaryGeneral, Audah Al Ahmadi, was also part of theADIPEC Awards Selection Committee.Our association was able to engage and networkwith the majority of the over 100 exhibiting entitiesin the energy sector by means of the virtual boothwe managed.PROCESS MODELLING WITH ASPEN HYSYSVIRTUAL TRAINING COURSE BY ASPENTECHIn collaboration with our Associate Member“AspenTech”, GDA has organized a repeat sessionto the virtual training course “Process Modeling withAspen HYSYS” for its Members on 12th – 14th, 19th –21st October 2020, for six days for twelve (12) Bapcoand KNPC employees, via MS Teams and an onlinecertification test.The course, which was delivered by Mr. Hassan AlMarzook & Mr. David Paor was designed to provideparticipants with the theoretical knowledge andpractical skills required to build, navigate andoptimize steady-state simulation models using AspenHYSYS. Attendees varied in the background fromProcess engineers, Plant engineers, R&D engineersand new engineering graduates/technologists. Thefully immersive course saw participants leave withthe ability to provide high-quality simulation modelsfor process design, operation, and safety studies,furnish a wide library of chemical components andthermodynamic property models, develop core6GDAFLASHcompetencies at an accelerated pace, automateengineering workflows with Aspen HYSYS to savevaluable project time, discover best practices torealize the full capabilities of Aspen HYSYS and earncontinuing education units toward P.E. licensingrequirements. On the 22nd of October 2020, theparticipants also took the online exam to get certifiedthrough the Aspen User Certification program.

NEWSGDA SUPPORTS MPGCGDA supported the 28th Annual Middle EastPetroleum & Gas Conference (MPGC 2020),organized by Conference Connection and cohosted by The Bahrain Petroleum Company(Bapco), National Oil & Gas Authority (NOGA) andnogaholding, under the Patronage of His ExcellencyShaikh Mohamed Bin Khalifa Al-Khalifa, Minister ofOil, Kingdom of Bahrain. The event took place as avirtual conference from 15th-17th November 2020.Ten virtual sessions spread over the two-day eventthat examined crude and product trade, the LNGand refining sectors, oil storage, shipping anddigitalization, offering data, cutting edge analysis,solutions, for stability and sustainability for the globaland Middle East oil and gas markets challenged byshifts in fundamentals and the pandemic.Aside from supporting the event, GDA also hada virtual booth where we engaged and invitedattendees to join in GDA’s vision to help create astronger downstream industry through collaboration.GDAFLASH7

NEWSGDA IN LEWAS PARTICIPATIONGDA had the privilege to support the 2020 LEWASAwards which had over 1,100 participants from57 countries. LEWAS brought together a globalaudience from diverse industries including oil andgas, chemicals, academia, healthcare, utilities,construction and beyond.The LEWAS 2020 three-day business briefingaddressed topics impacting the future of growthin the energy sector; from exploring what setsresilient organizations apart to how diversity drivesinnovation and growth during crises, preparing forthe next market shocks and more.With the theme, ‘Resilience Reimagined: LeadingPeople Through Change’ the symposium hadbusiness leaders move the needle on how somelong terms projects had to take off with the pandemicdeveloping overnight; shifting the pace, balanceand urgency to act on all fronts.The three-day event did exceptionally well with asteady stream of attendees joining from differenttime zones. 2020 was not an ideal year for all. We agree that it brought devastating disruptions, but there are still some things we haveto be thankful for.
