Wehope you will enjoy visiting Maastricht, a wonderful place to spend time exploringits magnificent buildings, lovely cathedrals and spectacularly cobblestoned towncentre. The city is well known for its fine cuisine, excellent shops and multiculturalatmosphere. Maastricht is also very compact, and so everything is walkingdistance, or why not hire a bicycle to get around!ISTM has now grown to 3,000 members in 90 countries and is the largestorganization of professionals dedicated to the advancement of the specialty oftravel medicine. Our CISTMs are really outstanding opportunities that occur onlyevery 2 years and allow travel medicine practitioners from around the world tocome together to share experiences, enjoy a collegial environment, and do a bit oftravelling themselves.We wish to take this opportunity to thank all of the participating presenters, chairs,Scientific Program Committee and Local Organising Committee members, whosehard work has produced a truly thought-provoking and dynamic programme.These conferences are now established as the leading venue for the practice andscience of the discipline of travel medicine, and this is reflected in the outstandingcaliber of international experts in the field who will be sharing their knowledge andexperience with us over the next few days. One way of doing this is for members to attend the ISTMMembership Assembly on Wednesday, 22 May at 17.15, followed by a cocktailreception. During the Assembly you will hear more about the ISTM activities andmeet the newly elected ISTM Executive Board. New ISTM members are particularlywelcome to attend this session.Also during the conference, look out for the scheduled membership meetingshosted by each of the ISTM Interest and Professional Groups. VisserBlaise GentonFrom the Chairs of the CISTM13 Scientific Program CommitteeDear Colleagues,On behalf of the Scientific Program Committee (SPC), we would like to welcomeyou to the CISTM13 where you will be treated to a stimulating scientific programand can enjoy the many activities and rich history that this wonderful city ofMaastricht has to offer. The ISTM has chosen a conveniently located state-of-the-artfacility for the conference and has assembled an exciting array of extra-curricularactivities. We are fortunate to have confirmed many outstanding and experiencedspeakers from Europe and around the world who will provide you with the mostimportant and current material in the discipline of travel medicine. The SPC beganplanning CISTM13 immediately after the meeting wrapped up in Boston. We metfor the first time in early 2012 in Maastricht to begin working on the scientificprogram. We have tried to develop a program that will be exciting and stimulatingfor all members of our Society with presentations that will cover the latest cuttingedge information in travel medicine as well as topics and clinical challenges thattravel medicine practitioners encounter in day-to-day practice.To develop this program we have carefully considered the feedback from ISTMmembers from the past CISTM meetings and the suggestions for the differentCISTM13 sessions, and have worked to create a rich, diverse program that will bedelivered by leading experts in the field. The response to our invitations to presentat the conference has been extremely positive.In a second meeting in Guatemala in February 2013, we had to choose from amongsta record number (over 260) of original abstract submissions the ones that would bepresented as oral communications. We would like to acknowledge the hard work5

of participants who submitted well-designed and creative original content. Thehigh number and quality of the abstracts submitted, each of which was carefullyread and assessed by six members of the Scientific Program Committee, resulted inadding another free communication session to the program to accommodate theexcellent work. Most of the other abstracts will be presented as posters during theconference, thus providing a wide range of innovative work from around the globe.We thank our colleagues on the SPC who contributed excellent ideas and submittedproposals for sessions and then spent many hours working closely with us toevaluate the submitted abstracts in a transparent manner. Their input contributedto the breadth and richness of the topics and content of the plenaries, symposiaand workshops chosen. We extend a special thanks to all members of the Societywho contributed suggestions for the different sessions. We have tried to balancethe selection of topics for this conference, emphasizing new ideas while providingample coverage of general topics that – we are sure – you would like to hear thelatest news about.The membership provides inspiration for the work of the SPC. Your contributionsand thoughts enrich the Society. CISTM13 provides an opportunity for travelmedicine providers to reconnect with longtime colleagues, make new contacts,exchange ideas, discuss controversial topics and, not the least, to enjoy these daysand have fun. The International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) is committedto the promotion of healthy and safe travel. In cooperation with health care providers,academic centers, the travel industry and the media, ISTM advocates and facilitateseducation, service, and research activities in the field of travel medicine. Descriptions of Scientific Program SessionsPlenary LecturesThe daily plenaries during the meeting are meant to highlight areas at the forefront of travel medicine. In general these are internationally prominent invitedspeakers with expertise allied to travel medicine who delegates would like to hear,but who would not otherwise attend a travel medicine meeting. Each speaker isallotted 30 minutes; there is no discussion period during plenary sessions. Thereare no concurrent sessions running during plenaries.Symposium LecturesEach symposium is meant to highlight areas at the forefront of daily travel medicine practice. The topics are more focused than the plenaries and in many caseswill appeal most to subsets of delegates with special interests. Each speaker isallotted 25 minutes for their presentation with 5 minutes for questions. Symposiaare held concurrently with other sessions.Workshop SessionsEach workshop session is designed to promote dialogue between 2 experts on atopic in the field of travel medicine and individuals in practice who have experiences to share and questions to ask. While designed to be intimate and interactive,experience indicates that workshop audiences will vary. Practical informationthat will give participants insight into the most current strategies for prevention,self-treatment, and diagnosis is emphasized. Workshop chairs will have developeda set of clinical scenarios or case histories designed to stimulate discussion/learning. Some workshops are designated as ABC, indicating an introductory level ofcontent, and some as Destination which focus on a particular geographic area. Allworkshop sessions are concurrent with other sessions.DebateThe debate during the meeting is meant to highlight a controversial area at theforefront of travel medicine. This format will feature 2 highly experienced ISTMmembers who will debate specific issues under the broad topic. There will beopening and closing statements by each of the debaters, and time will be madeavailable for questions from the audience to the debaters. This session will be heldconcurrently with other sessions.13

Free Communications Oral SessionsEach free communication session will consist of presentations of the latest originalresearch, case studies, or experiences of travel medicine peers. Each presentationwill be 10-minutes in length with 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Thesesessions are concurrent with other sessions.PostersPosters are presented on the latest original research, case studies or experiencesof travel medicine practitioners. Posters must be displayed on Monday, 20 May by10.00, and will be available for viewing from Monday, 20 May 2013 at 10.30 untilWednesday, 22 May 2013 in the Exhibit Hall. Authors will be in attendance onWednesday, 22 May 2013 from 16.15 to 17.15.Poster ToursOn Tuesday, 21 May 2013 during the morning and afternoon breaks, invitedexperts in travel medicine will lead groups to view posters and discuss selectedtopics. The poster tours are listed in the program schedules, and all delegates areinvited to participate. To join a poster tour, simply go to the Exhibition at the starttimes indicated in the schedule. There will be signage placed near the entranceand Conference staff will make certain you find your selected tour leader.Meet-the-History LecturesIn the early morning, the always popular Meet-the-History sessions describe historical and cultural background information on the local area that is of particularinterest to travel medicine professionals.Case of the DayIn an early morning session, an expert in travel medicine will present cases thatare both interesting and informative to attending delegates. The cases will raiseissues of diagnosis and therapy that will stimulate discussion and participation bythose attending.Meet the ProfessorIn these early morning sessions, travel medicine experts will meet with attendeesto discuss professional development and career planning.14

The form can be returned to the Registration Desk.Continuing Medical Education (CME) CreditsThe ‘13th Conference of the International Society of Travel Medicine’ is designated for a maximum of (or ‘for up to’) 20 hours of European external CME credits.Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.Through an agreement between the European Union of Medical Specialists andthe American Medical Association, physicians may convert EACCME creditsto an equivalent number of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits . Information on theprocess to convert EACCME credit to AMA credit can be found at www.ama-assn.org/go/internationalcme.Live educational activities, occurring outside of Canada, recognized by theUEMS-EACCME for ECMEC credits are deemed to be Accredited Group Learning Activities (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Programof The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.EACCME creditsEach medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
