!!Among the Hidden KEY Comprehension Questions for Text Evidence, Chapters 1-51. Describe how Luke’s parents treat him using details from the novel.Luke’s mother gives him extra attention when she can and is very sensitive to his moods. She is alwayspatient with Luke and takes time to explain things to him, such as the time she explained to him why he hadto hide (p 10). Luke’s father is less patient with Luke and is often complaining about Luke or frustratedbecause of Luke. For example, he yelled at Luke for peeking out the shades (p. 12) and complains aboutthe cost of heating the attic for Luke (p 16).2. Do you think the government is justified in limiting the number of children a family can have?Justify your answer using details from the novel.(opinion) The government might be justified in limiting the population because of the fear of famine. Oncea tramp came to Luke’s house looking for food, so there are hungry people in Luke’s society (p 17). Thegovernment might not be justified in limiting the population and may just be exerting its power over thepeople without just cause. Evidence of this includes the family’s distrust and fear of the government andthe government telling the family to get rid of the pigs (p 23).3. How does Luke feel towards his brothers, Matthew and Mark? Explain your answer.Luke is jealous of Matthew and Mark because they do not have to hide like Luke does. Luke looked forwardto his sixth birthday for months because he thought after turning six he would be able to go out in public(p 7). Luke wished he could go to school and go outside like his brothers could.4. At the end of Chapter 3, Luke’s mother makes the comment, “And things could be worse.” Whatevents does this statement foreshadow? (How do things get worse?)Things do get worse after Luke’s mother’s statement. First, Luke is no longer allowed to eat meals at thetable with his family and instead has to eat them from the bottom of the stairs (p 20). Then, a letter fromthe government upsets his family as they are ordered to get rid of the hogs (p 25) and this will causefinancial difficulty.5. Explain why Luke’s chair is no longer kept in the kitchen. One of the workers asked Luke’s father why the shades were always closed in a house with no airconditioning. Luke’s father was concerned that keeping the shades closed would draw suspicion frompeople nearby. Luke’s mother asked him to eat on the bottom of the stairs and removed his chair to preventfurther suspicion (p 21).!
