Brief Summary of Findings on the Association Between Physical Inactivity and Severe COVID-19 OutcomesTwenty-five studies, 15 cohort, 5 cross-sectional, 4 ecological and one case-control, reported data on physical inactivity or physical activity and severeCOVID-19 outcomes and were included in this analysis. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results inenergy expenditure. Physical inactivity is defined as the lack of physical activity. Both may vary, depending on the context. The data indicate an association between increased mortality1-12 and hospitalization8,13-18 due to COVID1-19 infection and physical inactivity, anda possible association between increased ventilation1,6,9 due to COVID1-19 infection and physical inactivity. Limited data is insufficient on theassociation between physical inactivity and ICU admission6,9. Limited data from only one study is insufficient to determine if there is anassociation between physical inactivity and intubation17. The data suggest an increased risk of mortality19-22 and hospitalization15,17,18,22-25 due toCOVID1-19 infection with decreased duration or frequency of physical activity.Disclaimer: The findings and conclusions in this report are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Page 2 of 63
