They willbe expected to interact effectively with the teacher/examiner, defend their views andsustain discussion as the teacher/examiner moves the conversation away from theirchosen issue.They will be expected to use the language of debate and argument to discuss the issueand will also be assessed for understanding as well as communication and quality ofspoken language.Assessment:11-13 minute assessmentStudents first outline their chosen issue for about one minute, adopting a definitestance towards the issue. C French unit contentCourse structure Edexcel’s GCE in French comprises four units and contains anAdvanced Subsidiary subset of two AS units. The Advanced Subsidiary GCE is the first half of the GCE courseand consists of Units 1 and 2. It may be awarded as a discretequalification or contribute 50 per cent of the total Advanced GCEmarks. The full Advanced GCE award consists of the two AS units(Units 1 and 2), plus two A2 units (Units 3 and 4) which makeup the other 50 per cent of the Advanced GCE. Students wishingto take the full Advanced GCE must, therefore, complete all fourunits. Spoken Expression and Response in FrenchPreparationUnit 1Students are able to undertake focused preparation for this unitas they can select their preferred general topic area in advance.They should become familiar with the full range of prescribed linkedsubtopics and, through regular classroom practice, often participatein formatively-assessed discussions. More information and adviceon preparing for this unit is given in the GCE oral training guide,available on the Edexcel website (www.edexcel.com).In addition, students will have a 15-minute preparation period whenthey receive the stimulus immediately prior to the test. They shouldspend this time studying the stimulus with a view to answering fourrelated questions and considering further discussion points thatmight follow on. Students will not be allowed access to a dictionaryor any other resources at this time. However, it will be possible forstudents to make notes (no more than one side of A4) which theycan refer to during the examination. They must not write on thestimulus.StimulusDifferent sets of stimuli will be produced for each of the above topicareas and will be issued on a random-allocation basis as prescribedin the Oral handbook for GCE. Stimuli will be written in French(approximately 70-90 words) at an accessible level for AdvancedSubsidiary students and may be supported by a visual. These willbe issued to students on the day of their assessment.Time allocationThe assessment time should, as far as possible, be divided equallybetween the two sections. Although assessment is qualitative ratherthan quantitative, the test should take no less than eight minutesand no more than 10 minutes.1.3 ContentFocusAlthough this unit relates to a chosen general topic area, it isessentially designed to assess manipulation and understanding ofthe French spoken language. The general topic areas should beconsidered as different contexts in which students can develop, useand understand spoken French language. Rainbow Grange was founded in1876. The Rosier Grange was founded in 1933. They merged in 1994 when their memberships were waning and upkeep of the substantial building in North Brooksville (now Bill Jagger's carpen-try shop) became too burdensome. The current Rosier Rainbow Grange Hall was built on land donated by Lillian Bakeman around 1940.
