Synergies with EU Missions On 29 September 2021 the Commission adopted a Communication on EuropeanMissions. Based on the 5 areas agreed by the co-legislators, the Commission identified 5 Missions on whichHorizon Europe will dedicate almost 1,8 billion EUR in the period 2021-2023: Adaptation to Climate Change: support at least 150 European regions and communitiesto become climate resilient by 2030 (approximately EUR 368 m). Cancer: improving the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cureand for those affected by cancer including their families, to live longer and better.(approximately EUR 378 m). Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030 (approximately EUR 344 m). 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 (approximately EUR 360 m). A Soil Deal for Europe: 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towardshealthy soils by 2030 (approximately EUR 320 m).

Synergies with EU Missions Two of the 5 Missions have their clear centre of gravity in Cluster 6 (Oceans and Waters – SoilDeal) Cluster 6 also has strong links with the Mission on Climate adaptationAdaptation toClimate changeCancerRestore ourOceans andWatersClimateneutral &smart citiesSoil Deal forEurope

Why a mission on soil health? www.sli.doHealthy soils are the basis for nutritious and safe tions: water regulation, hosting biodiversity, nutrientcycling, climate mitigation and adaptation, carryinglandscapes and cultural services.Green Deal Targets on climate, biodiversity, zeropollution and sustainable food systems depend onhealthy soils.Soil is a scarce, non-renewable resource: it takeshundreds of years to generate 1 cm of top soil but only acouple of years or less to destroy it. Soils are threatened due to current managementpractices, pollution, urbanisation and the effects of climatechange. The effects of climate change put further pressure onsoils and accelerate land degradation.15

A Soil Deal for Europe: 100 living labs and lighthousesto lead the transition towards healthy soils by 20301. Reduce desertification5. Prevent erosion2. Conserve soil organiccarbon stocks6. Improve soil structure toenhance soil biodiversity3. Stop soil sealing andincrease re-use of urban soils4. Reduce soil pollution andenhance restoration7. Reduce the EU globalfootprint soils8. A strong research and innovation agenda toimprove our knowledge on forests Forests play a crucial role for the achievement of the EU climateand biodiversity objectives. Building on the 2030 EU Biodiversity Strategy, the Commissionhas published a new EU Forest Strategy covering the wholeforest cycle and promoting the many services that forests provide. Research and innovation (R&I) will be key drivers in achievingthe ambitious goals of the Strategy.www.sli.do24

The bioeconomy will require tight linkages between a diversity of agricultural sciences with other biological, chemical, and engineering technical fields. Underpinning this growth is the role rural America plays, because the materials needed to build the bioeconomy are largely produced on farms and forests.

The diversificationof the forest-based bioecono-my is also a key issue. In the 20th century, the for-est-based bioeconomy was very much focused on pulp and paper products, wood products, and forest-ry related to these. Today, and increasingly so in the future, the forest-based bioeconomy is also bioener-gy, biochemicals, textiles, construction .
