EligibilityIn order to apply for the entrance examination, prospective students must meet the requirements set by theGraduate School of Engineering. Refer to Guidelines for Applicants to the 2022 Master’s Program GraduateSchool of Engineering, the University of Tokyo for details.There are no restrictions regarding past fields of specialization (majors/degrees) or year(s) whenqualifications (degrees) were attained. Master’s Course entrance examinations are conducted once a year.2. Supervising Professors and Application FormsGraduate students pursue their research activity under the guidance of their academic supervisors. Therefore,applicants are required to select up to two prospective academic supervisors from the supervisors list onpages 5 & 6 and write their names and their research divisions in the Prospective academic supervisorsdeclaration form (Exhibit No. 1).There are six Research Divisions in the Department of Architecture: Design, Planning, History, System &Construction, Environment, Structure & Material. All academic supervisors belong to one of those researchdivisions as shown in the list on pages 5 & 6.Applicants must prepare and submit the following documents in addition to the submission requirementsoutlined in the Guidelines for Applicants to the 2022 Master's Program for Graduate School of Engineering,The University of Tokyo. Details of how to submit the additional documents will be announced at theDepartment of Architecture's website. 3.Number of Accepted Students and Admission Dates & DeadlinesThe Department of Architecture Master’s Course will accept 32 students in academic year 2022*. Thenumber of students admitted to each professor is restricted in order to avoid unbalanced researchenvironments within the department. Normally, admitted students enter graduate school in April. Studentswho complete undergraduate courses by the end of September may enter the graduate school in October, asstated in Graduate School Admission Information.*The Japanese academic year starts on April 1 and ends on March 31.4.ExaminationsApplicants will be evaluated based on written and oral entrance examinations as described below.(A)Written examinationSubjectDuration of test1. Each applicantwill be allotted several minutes with a group of faculty members from the applicable field. Notes(1) Applicants should carefully read the Notice for Examination The 2021 Master’s / Doctoral Program,Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo announced on the website of the Departmentof Architecture, https://arch.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/.(2) Entering the examination room 30 minutes after the beginning of the examination is prohibited under anycircumstances.(3) All applicants are subject to an identity verification using the photograph on their admission card beforeor during the examination. Failure to verify your identity may result in disqualification.(4) As a general rule, the entrance examination will be conducted at the test center in Hongo Campus at theUniversity of Tokyo in person only. However, those applicants who are unable to take the examination inperson at the test center due to severe and legally proven hardships, such as those living overseas with theborders momentarily closed, or those who have a pre-existing medical condition and are at increased riskof developing dangerous symptoms of COVID-19, may be allowed to take the entrance examination. Anapplicant who wishes to take the examination online due to the above mentioned reasons should submitthe Online Examination Application Form which can be found on the website of the Department ofArchitecture. Please keep in mind that once the application is accepted and the online examination isoffered, it won’t be possible anymore to take the examination at the test center in person. The result of theapplication, whether or not an applicant can take the entrance examination online, will be sent via postalmail together with the examination number card.Those who are allowed to take the examination online must participate in a mock exam conducted priorto the examination. Failure to do so may result in disqualification from taking the actual entranceexamination. During the online written examination, the examinees will be recorded for ensuring exam3

integrity.Details will be posted in June, 2021 on the website of the Department of Architecture (https://arch.t.utokyo.ac.jp/)In this case, the preparations shown in (5) should be made.(5) The in-person examination is currently scheduled to be held at the test center in the Hongo Campus at theUniversity of Tokyo. There is, however, a possibility that the examination may be conducted via onlinedue to COVID-19 circumstances. In that case, we will notify the examinees via the website of theDepartment of Architecture. In the event of holding the online examination for all, all prospectiveexaminees must prepare and secure the followings in advance before the actual examination date:・private room where silence and good illumination can be guaranteed,・good network connection that enables online examination using a video call,・PC with camera and microphone,・smartphone with camera (4G or 5G).(6) The information in this guide is subject to change due to the situation of the COVID-19 coronaviruspandemic.
