The Role of the PreceptorThe College of Nursing Graduate Faculty would like to thank you for taking time to be a preceptor for one ofour students. The role of the preceptor is important in shaping the development of a nurse practitioner. Werecognize that it takes time to supervise a student, and we appreciate the additional time you give to eachstudent. Preceptors must have an advanced practice degree (APRN, MD,DO, PA) and at least one year experience at the advanced practice level. Emphasizes the counseling role of thePsychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurse (PMHAPN) as well as the concepts underlying nursing’spractice of the counseling role, including ethical and legal considerations. Lab focus on the development ofindividual and group counseling skills for advanced nursing practice.PREREQUISITE COURSES: NoneCREDIT ALLOCATION: 2 - 3 credits (2 didactic/0 - 1 lab)Purpose of the Course: This course is designed for survey and application of selected counseling frameworksin the care of individuals, families, groups, and communities representing diversity in culture, lifestyle, andvalues. Specific learning objectives and setting(s) determined in consultation withfaculty.PREREQUISITE COURSES: NRSG 606/806, NRSG 662/862, NRSG 663/863, NRSG 664/864 and NRSG 665/865 orpermission of instructorCREDIT ALLOCATION: 1 - 8 credits (1 - 8 lab)Purpose of the Course: This course is designed to be taught primarily as a practicum. Students focus on one ormore of the following areas of advanced psychiatric mental health nursing: (a) rural mental health, (b) childrenand adolescents, (c) adults, (d) geriatric psychiatry, (e) severely and persistently mentally ill, (f) addictions, or(g) consultation-liaison psychiatric nursing.Course Objectives1.
