distinguished AlumniThe University of Texas at ElPaso is proud to recognize its2011 Distinguished Alumni Awardrecipients presented by the UTEPAlumni Association. The award isthe highest honor bestowed upongraduates who have excelled intheir professions and sustained acommitment to the University.Our 2011 distinguished alumni areBob Black and Jerry I. Porras.Bob BlackBob Blackearned abachelor’sdegree inhistory fromThe Universityof Texas at ElPaso in 1977before going on to complete lawschool and become the managingpartner of MehaffyWeber, aBeaumont, Texas law firm he joinedmore than 30 years ago.In June 2011, he was sworn in aspresident of the State Bar of Texas.Born in Ocala, Fla., Black movedto El Paso in 1966 at age 11, abouta month after Texas WesternCollege, now UTEP, won the men’sNCAA basketball championship.For a sports fan who had mostrecently lived in a tiny northern city– Sunburst, Mt., population 307 – ElPaso’s warm weather, minor leaguebaseball team and community of250,000 people still abuzz with16the recent basketball victory was awelcome change.Black attended Eastwood HighSchool, where he first becameinvolved in speech and debate. Heearned debate and National HonorSociety scholarships to attend UTEP,where he enrolled in 1972. He wasan active member of the University’sdebate team, which becamevaluable training for his futurecareer as an attorney.He attributes much of his successto the training he received fromextraordinary teachers at UTEP,including the late Gene Kuzirian.“I was thinking about becominga history professor, so (Kuzirian)really focused on my papers andforced me to examine my thinkingon logical consistency, on whetherI was being redundant, and if I wasquestioning the evidence,” Blacksaid. “He gave me a very gentlenudge toward law school becausehe felt that’s where my talentswere.”Outside of his job, Black is anavid duplicate bridge player and adevoted animal lover. He has servedas president of the Humane Societyof Southeast Texas and has been apresident and member of severalbridge leagues. He collects artand first editions of contemporaryAmerican literature.During his year as president of theState Bar, Black hopes to educatethe public on the role of lawyersand teach civics to children. He’llalso concentrate on providingservices to Texas’ 89,000 lawyers.

Jerry PorrasJerry I. Porras,the LaneProfessor ofOrganizationalBehaviorand Change,Emeritus,at StanfordUniversity, started his long career ineducation with a bachelor’s degreein electrical engineering in 1960from Texas Western College, nowUTEP.Born and raised in El Paso, Porrasand his three siblings ended upat Texas Western because theycouldn’t afford to go anywhereelse. But the foundation heestablished was key to his futuresuccess.“I’m one of the hundreds ofthousands of Mexican-Americanswho, if it had not been forUTEP, would not have had theopportunity to go to college andget a university education,” Porrassaid. “UTEP serving that purposein El Paso is really a significantcontribution it’s making to theLatino community nationwide.”Porras served in the Army forthree years after college, thenworked as an engineer at LockheedMissiles and Space Co. andGeneral Electric Co. for anotherthree years, but realized that hisinterests were in managing. Hehad no background in accountingor marketing, so he decidedto pursue a Master of BusinessAdministration.After completing his M.B.A.at Cornell University in 1968,he went on to earn his Ph.D. inmanagement at the University ofCalifornia, Los Angeles, and startedteaching at Stanford in 1972. Hehas since written three books,including Built to Last: SuccessfulHabits of Visionary Companies,which has sold more than 1 millioncopies.Porras has taught courses inleadership, interpersonal dynamicsand organizational developmentand change at the StanfordUniversity Graduate School ofBusiness. He directed the school’sExecutive Program on Leading andManaging Change for 16 years. Hebecame an emeritus professor in2001.Since then, Porras and his wife,Charlene, have spent time travelingand pursuing other interests. Hehas served on advisory boardsfor three State Farm insurancecompanies, a small startup businesscalled Translattice, and the KnightCommission on IntercollegiateAthletics, among others.He is a recipient of the BrillanteAward presented by the NationalSociety of Hispanic MBAs and the2007 Lifetime Achievement Awardfrom Hispanic Business magazine.17
