What follows is an adapted excerpt from Pius Parsch’s seminal reflections on the Liturgy of the Churchwhich are exclusively collected at Biretta Books for the first time in half a century. Make your waydownstairs to buy your copy of the first volume which guides you from Advent through Christmastide.Raised Against Rising DarknessWe celebrate the finding of the true Cross(September 14, 320) by St. Helen, and theconsecration of the church of the HolySepulcher at Jerusalem. Later the “finding” was celebratedon May 3, and the present date commemorated the recoveryof the Cross from the Persians by Emperor Heraclius inthe year 628. The king himself delivered the holy relics tothe patriarch Zacharias on May 3, 630. With special reasonthe Church celebrates the feast now at the beginning ofautumn; the Cross is “raised” against the rising darkness, asymbol of the might of Hell. The Church wishes to “raisethe sign of the Son of Man” which will appear at His SecondComing. The feast belongs to the most ancient legaciesof the liturgy and should be accorded greater attention. In the Holy Sacrifice and in the sacrificial Banquet wereceive the blessed effects of the Cross, we too are “liftedup” and share in the Lord’s exaltation. It is exceptional forthe Communion to be composed by the Church: “Throughthe sign of the Cross deliver us from our enemies, Oour God!” Sacramental strength is here attributed to thesign of the Cross. The sign of the Cross has often beenemployed as an exorcism against the demons; the LatinChurch also distributes Holy Communion with this sacredsign. We would make the sign of the Cross, the mostfrequently used sacramental, with much more devotionif we were conscious that it had sacramental power. ThePancients expressed thepower of the Crossvery succinctly bythe Greek anagramfor in the Cross is lightand life. The sign of theCross puts the devilto flight, breaks thepower of Hell; wherethe Cross is plantedthe devil does not dareto tread. Therefore, crosses on doorsand gates, and thecustom of frequentlysigning oneself. Thesacramental powerinherent in the signof the Cross shouldbe more highlyappreciated, more often used. With its sign let us protectourselves from the evil enemy (before work in the morning, during temptation, etc.). Against the might of Hell guardyour dwellings, barns, fields by replicas of Christ’s savingCross. Are you Prepared to Receive Holy Communion?eople in the pews sometimes wonder whether they are prepared to receive Our Lord at HolyCommunion—or worse, not at all. So, what is necessary to worthily receive Holy Communion? Please follow these three guideposts.1. You must be a baptizedCatholic.2. You must be in a state ofgrace with no mortal sin onyour soul.3. You must have fasted at leastone hour before receiving HolyCommunion.*Confession before Communion is not required every time unless you need to confess a mortal sin. Ifyou knowingly and willingly receive Holy Communion without following the three easy guideposts, you must confess that sacrilege before again presenting yourself for Holy Communion. The CanonsRegular encourage you to consult your confessor with any additional questions or concerns.*You may drink water and take any medically required medicines.
