IntroductionThis course catalogue lists all courses available for the academic year 2020-2021. Class of 2023,namely the cohort that started in September 2020, may choose courses out of this list.It is important to note that this course catalogue may vary in the future and that some of thefollowing courses may change in name, new courses could be added or some might becomeunavailable for Liberal Arts and Sciences students. Also, please keep in mind that students areallowed to take courses from different faculties within the University of Groningen – those coursesare not listed within this catalogue but can be consulted through the digital course catalogue(namely, Ocasys).The Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) degree programme is provided by University CollegeGroningen (UCG) of the University of Groningen, hereinafter referred to as the Faculty. Thiscourse catalogue also applies to students of other degree programmes, faculties or institutes ofhigher education, insofar as they follow course units in the degree programme (including Minors)offered by the Faculty. Course units that students follow in other degree programmes or at otherfaculties or institutes of higher education are subject to the Teaching and Examination Regulationsof that programme, faculty or institute.ProgrammeThe degree programme is divided into a propaedeutic phase and a post-propaedeutic phase. Theentire programme comprises an Academic Core (70 ECTS), a Major (Specialisation) (80 ECTS)and a University/ Personal Minor (30 ECTS). Courses description Propaedeutic phase: the first 60 ECTS credits of the formal Bachelor’s degreeprogramme.Post-propaedeutic phase: the part of the Bachelor’s degree programme (120 ECTS)following the propaedeutic phase.ECTS credits: student workload of each course unit is expressed in ECTS credits,whereby 1 ECTS is equivalent to a student workload of 28 hours.Elective course: this is a course that a student can choose to follow on a voluntary basis.Sometimes (e.g. Core Electives) students get to choose from a selection of electiveswhere at least a specific number of electives must be followed.Compulsory course: a course that students must follow to continue with their studyprogramme.Academic core course: refers to the list of courses that provide a broad foundation foryour education. The general educational purpose of a core course of study is to ensurethat all students take and complete courses that are considered to be academically andculturally essential. For example: academic skills and research, methodology etc.o LAS Core Electives: these are some of the compulsory courses in the first year.Students must choose at least 2 out of 7 available. These electives are at theessence of the LAS curriculum because of their strong interdisciplinary nature ofanalysing topics from different disciplines and methods. For example, the course‘War’ or ‘Health and Disease’. An overview of these courses with videos is visibleon our website.o Research and Methodology course: this type of course teaches the bases of howacademic research is conducted, touching upon data analysis, building atheoretical framework and using statistical techniques etc. An example isQualitative Data Collection and Analysiso Project: this type of courses provide the context for experiential learning. Here,existing and new scholarship is applied to practical situations, using collaborativeproblem-solving skills. There is one Project on each of the three academic years.Major course: this is a course specific to the type of Major – either in the Sciences, SocialSciences, Humanities or a combination of them (Free Major).Levels: the so called 100 or 200 or 300 levels stand for the courses that can be taken inYear 1, Year 2, Year 3, respectively. Note that the minimum amount of courses at eachlevel is specifically determined in the Teaching and Examination Regulations.Minor: the space available for differentiation within the degree programme for students tofurther develop their academic profile within the degree programme. Academic FreedomEach Major offers a different degree of academic freedom. In other words, a student who choosesa Specialization within a Major will have a more routed curriculum compared to a student with aFree Major. There are, of course, choices in between as – for instance – choosing a Major withoutdeclaring a Specialization.AppendixesA. Free MajorAt University College Groningen, you make the choice to either follow one of our main Majors, aMajor specialisation or design your own Major. Do you want to combine Mind and Behaviour withHumanities? Are you preparing for an MA in International Relations or Chemistry? Is Econometricsyour main field of interest? You can sit down with your tutor and design your own curriculum aroundyour current interests and your plans for your master as well as professional future. You cancombine courses that we offer at University College Groningen with courses from the otherfaculties of the University of Groningen to fit your specific needs. All UCG students will continue tobe part of the core group and project-work together, so you will be able to bring your particularspecific (inter-) disciplinary expertise into your UCG projects.The free Major programmes are awarded the degree ‘Bachelor of Science’ or ‘Bachelor of Arts’depending on the number of credits (minimum 50 ECTS credits) collected in either Sciences/SocialSciences or Humanities.
