As a pharmacy leadership society on the Texas SouthernUniversity campus (TSU), PLS strives for the betterment of thecommunity, and the pharmacy profession. The goal of this event is toprovide a hub of access to all of the resources at TSU including otherpharmacy groups, the Health Center, Recreational Center, CounselingCenter, and many other different organizations! At this event, PLSprovided free health screenings such as blood pressure, blood glucose,blood cholesterol, BMI, STD and depression. In addition to this,educational materials were displayed to bring awareness to use ofantibiotics, medication safety, breast cancer awareness, and many otherfun activities. There were 17 students, 2 professors and 1 staff person in attendance. The group washosted by Health Administration Senior and employee, Derius Davis, and the Volunteer Services Coordinators, Bianca DeLeon and Kimberly Brown. The day was filled with presentations from Mr. Chris Matthews,Administrative Director of Hospital Operations and Ancillary Services and Mrs. Juanita Al-Abbadi, Directorof Patient Customer Relations. The students enjoyed learning about sharpening their leadership skills andways that they can transition into healthcare through volunteerism. They were treated to a tour throughout thehospital and along the way learned about the many areas of the hospital and where as future administratorsthey could work. During one of the stops, the students were able tomeet Kia Ward, who is to two time graduate of TSU and now works inoperations. She gave themsome perspective of what it islike to work in an administrative role for a clinical program.Overall, the tour was a hugesuccess and each participantwas excited about the learningopportunity to interface withadministrative professionals inHealth Administration.Texas Southern University Alumna, Kia Wardspoke to our Health Administration studentsabout her role in Nursing Operations during theLBJ tour. Student HighlightsPoint of Care TestingMrs. Dorothy Cumming, Clinical Adjunct Instructor in the ClinicalLaboratory Science Program lectured to first year pharmacy students in thePharmacy Practice II Lab course on Point-of-Care (POC) Testing, alongwith two students in the CLS program.Mrs. Cumming provided hands-on training with cholesteroland blood glucose monitoring,testing for mononucleosis “thekissing disease”, and urinedipstick. She also sharedinformation regardingsyphilis, HIV testingand more.She shared theimportance of usingcontrolled measures in diagnosing in any practice setting, CLIA;the regulatory agency on federal standards on testing of humanspecimens, and accreditation through the College of AmericanPathology (CAP).“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships."– Michael JordanProfessionalism and Harmonious Relations CommitteeThe Professional and Harmonious Relationships (PHR) Committee was developed to foster greatrelationships between faculty, staff, and students in the COPHS. As a result of several meetings,the committee has developed a pledge to uphold the standards and values of the organization anduniversity as a whole. The core values are DEVELOP, FOSTER, SUPPORT, DEDICATE, andMAINTAIN. Student HighlightsTSU Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Round Table EventCOPHS students collaborating at the AMCP Round Table Event.2019 TSU AMCP/IPHO held its first annual managed care/industry roundtable event on campus Pharmacist came from several companies including Bristol-Myers, Pfizer, Takeda Shire, NovoNordisk, UTMB, Harris Health, Aetna and Cigna. Students were able to engage and ask questions aboutresidencies, fellowships, internships and careers. Faculty who had previous positions/experience in thesefields were also there to speak with our students on their experiences. Student HighlightsCongratulations Andre’ Phillips and Ka Wong for getting accepted into the Methodist Internship LongitudinalExperience (MILE) Program through Houston Methodist. The purpose of the MILE program is to providepractical experience in health system pharmacy to optimally prepare student pharmacists for post-graduatetraining and other professional opportunities. Up to four students are accepted each year between UH andTSU, and for the first time in over three years, the MILE program selected two TSU pharmacy students.Through this awesome opportunity, Phillips and Wong will spend 75% of their experience in operations anddirect patient care, and 25% of their experience completing projects, research, assignments, and attending seminars & mentor-mentee activities. Phillips and Wong will be joining Ryan Hughes (P4), Darlington FrancisKudos to Kenley MillerSangodeyi for his firstpublished article. MillerSangodeyi is a P1 studentthat worked with a teamto investigate howinterleukin-1 alphaincreases anti-tumorefficacy of cetuximab inhead and neck squamouscell carcinoma.6

ProgrammingPeer MentoringThis Spring, we offered three peer mentoring days, February 4th, March 18th, and March 25th. The first two sessionswere led by the P3s, where roughly 21 P1 students were in attendance. The P3s provided the P1s with valuableinformation on how to maneuver and be successful in the program. On March 18th, the P3s discussed professionalism, internships, and timemanagement. On March 25th, theP4s led the session with mostlyP3s in attendance on how to goabout finding the right residencyprogram. The students look forto the professional developmentand self-reflective oriented peermentoring days in the Fall.P3s and P1s, Peer MentoringDay, February 4, 2019.P3s and P1s, PeerMentoring Day,March 18, 2019.P4s and P3s, PeerMentoring Day,March 25, 2019.7

ProgrammingMulticultural DayAll students in the COPHS were invited to theMulticultural Day Event held on May 2, 2019 inthe Nabrit Science building. With the sponsorshipof Walgreens, COPHS was able to expose studentsto different cultural cuisines. Students were alsoencouraged to dress in their native attire and bringtraditional dishes as well. Thirty students acrossthe college attended the event, in addition to the 19students that brought a traditional dish. Next year,the college looks forward to seeing more studentsparticipate and present about their culture.8

Texas Southern University (TSU) hostedits third annual Maroon & Gray Affair onSaturday, April 27 at the MarriottMarquis Hotel in Houston. The galaraised a record 1.2 million for studentscholarships.Alumni Matthew and Angela Rogersowners of Power Center Pharmacy“The Texas Southern University communityhas delivered a strong helping handthrough this event to students who are ontheir way to graduation,” said TSU PresidentAustin A. Lane. “Thisunparalleled generosity means that young people can concentrate and stay on a strongacademic path to become leaders in today’sever-changing society.” Texas Southernalumni and students were honored duringSaturday’s sold-out event. “We are proud tocelebrate our students and alumni in such adynamic way,” said Loren Lane, first ladyof Texas Southern University. Message from the Interim DeanAs we close the 2018-2019 academic year with activities presented in thisnewsletter, I want to update you on significant College events that lie ahead.The Dean’s search has progressed aggressively with interviews for fourcandidates scheduled from March 6th to March 13th.The College is actively engaged in preparation for program accreditationreviews in Pharmacy, Environmental Health, Clinical Laboratory Sciences,Respiratory Care and Health Care Administration.Dr. Felicia McAdams launched the co-curricular requirements program forthe Pharmacy students. The program is still evolving with the hopes of incorporating faculty and alumni in the review and planning process. The students havealready committed to the experiential activities designed to enhance students’learning through the application of knowledge and skills acquired in theclassroom setting to activities, projects, and experiences in the community.The College’s first interprofessional global experience is scheduled for Maystth31 –June 15 in St. Kitts/Nevis.The College Culmination Ceremony, honoring COPHS graduates in all programs is scheduled for May17th in Granville Sawyer Auditorium. A reception for graduates and their guests follows on theCampus Plaza. Commencement is May 18th. The Class of 2019 has 107 PharmD candidates forgraduates and 90 Health Sciences candidates for graduation.The College Culmination Ceremony, honoring COPHS graduates in all programs is scheduled for May17, 2019 at 4:00-6:00 pm in Granville Sawyer Auditorium. A reception for graduates and their guestsfollows on the Campus Plaza.This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the College producing quality health care professionals for thecity, state, nation and the world. We are excited about the celebration scheduled for fall, 2019.
