SPIRAL WOUNDGASKETSDriven by the industry’sneed for safe, effectivesealing solutions forincreasingly demandingapplications, Flexitallicinvented the spiralwound gasket in 1912.First and ForemostThe concept of spiral wound gasketconstruction was originated by Flexitallicin 1912, starting a new era in safe, effective sealing. The primary purposefor this development was the increasinglysevere temperatures and pressures usedby U.S. refinery operators in the first halfof the 20th century.Metal StripFiller MaterialThe necessity for a gasket to havethe ability to recover cannot be overemphasised. The effects of pressureand temperature fluctuations, thetemperature differential across theflange face, together with bolt stressrelaxation and creep, demand a gasketwith adequate flexibility and recoveryto maintain a seal even under thesevarying service conditions. The FlexitallicSpiral Wound Gasket is the precisionengineered solution to such problems, meeting the most exacting conditionsof both temperature and pressure inflanged joints and similar assembliesand against virtually every knowncorrosive and toxic media.3.

GASKETIDENTIFICATIONGaskets are colour coded to help expedite the selection and identity of the gaskets you need. The colour on the outside edge of the centering ring identifies both the winding and filler materials. The metallic winding material is designated by a solid colour. The filler materials are designated bycolour stripes at equal intervals on the outside edge of the centering ring. Flexitallic colour codingmeets the industry standard for metal and filler materials listed in ASME B16.20.Metallic WindingMaterialsThe metallic windingmaterial is designatedby a solid colouridentification aroundthe outside edge ofthe centering e347SSBlue310SSNo colour304LSSNo colour309SSNo colour430SSNo colourAlloy 20BlackTitanium PurpleInconel 600/625GoldIncoloy 800/825WhiteInconel X750No ColourHastelloy C276BeigeHastelloy B2BrownNickel 200RedZirconiumNo colourCarbon SteelSilverPTFEWhite StripeFlexicarb Gray StripeMonel OrangeDuplexNo colourFlexite Super Pink StripeCeramicLight Green Stripe4. www.flexitallic.comNon Metallic FillersThe gasket fillermaterials are designatedby a number of stripesplaced at equal intervalsaround the outside edgeof the centering ring.Thermiculite 835Light Blue Stripe

GASKETSELECTIONStyle CG – Is comprised of asealing element and outer metalring. The outer ring assists inlocating the gasket on the matingflange faces and prevents overcompression of the sealingelement ensuring optimum sealingperformance. Style CG gaskets aresuitable for use on raised and flatfaced flanged connections. Style CGgaskets are suitable for use in mildto moderate service conditions.Style CGI – In addition to an outermetal ring the CGI style gasket is fittedwith an inner metal ring, constrainingthe sealing element on both internaland external diameters. The inner ringfunctions as an additional compressionstop and prevents inner buckling of thesealing element. It also creates aphysical barrier between the sealingelement and process stream shieldingfrom heat and media while preventingerosion. Style CGI gaskets are suitablefor use on raised and flat faced flangedconnections and moderate to severeservice conditions.Style R – Is comprised of a sealingelement, additional plies of metalare used at the start andtermination of the winding processimproving stability and sealingperformance. Unlike other stylesof spiral wound gasket compressionof the sealing element is controlledby the use of the correct flangeface configuration, style R gasketsare suitable for use on tongue andgroove, male and female and flatto groove flanged connections.Style RIR – Is comprised of asealing element and inner metal ring. The inner ring functions as botha compression stop and creates aphysical barrier between the sealingelement and media stream. The innerring is also designed to reduceturbulent flow, minimising flangeerosion and prevents the build updebris in the annular space betweenthe pipe bore and internal diameterof the gasket. Style RIR gaskets aresuitable for use on male and female(spigot and recess) flangedconnections.Published as an indication of which Flexitallic spiral wound gasket best suits different pipe flange configurations and service conditions.SELECTION GUIDEFlange FaceRaised FaceFlat FaceMale and FemaleTongue and GrooveFlat Face to RecessStyle CGStyle CGStyle RStyle RStyle RStyle CGIStyle CGIStyle RIRStyle RIRStyle RIRRecommendedGasket StyleFor general dutiesRecommendedGasket StyleFor high pressure/temperature duty, also for gaskets withPTFE filler, corrosiveor fluctuating pressureor temperature serviceconditions.NOTES: Where style R gaskets are fitted it is essential that the flange is correctly dimensioned to provide a compression stop, as over compression can result in failure.6. www.flexitallic.com

Special gaskets have been designed forvalves, pumps, compressors, turbines, boilers, heatexchangers, etc. Consult with Flexitallic engineersas early in the design stage as possible.Flexitallic style CG and CGI SpiralWound Gaskets can bemanufactured in accordance withall relevant gasket standards to suitthe following flange designations. Please note that gaskets for nonstandard flanges are also readilyavailable.Low Emission style Gaskets areavailable, which conform to major oilrefinery requirements in accordancewith CFET March 2013 revision. Please speak to the ApplicationsEngineering Department for furtherinformation.Note: When using PTFE filler material,Spiral Wound Gaskets shall be fittedwith an inner metal ring (i.e. style CGI).ASME B16.5ASME B16.47 Series A (MSS SP 44)ASME B16.47 Series B (API 605)BS 10BS 1560BS 4504BS EN 1092BS EN 1759DIN FlangesJIS FlangesWHEN ORDERING PLEASE SPECIFYEXAMPLEGasket styleFlexitallic Style “CGI” Spiral Wound GasketNominal pipe size (NPS)4”Pressure ratingClass 900Gasket standardASME B16.20Winding materials316L/Flexicarb (FG)Outer ring materialCarbon SteelInner ring material316L7.
