THE HISTORY OF EDWARD WATERS COLLEGEEdward Waters College (EWC) is,distinctively, Florida’s oldest independentinstitution of higher learning as well asthe state’s first institution established forthe education of African Americans. In 1865, following the Civil War, theReverend Charles H. Pearce, a presidingelder of the African Methodist Episcopal(AME) Church, was sent to Floridaby Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne.Observing the fast-paced social andpolitical changes of the Reconstructionera, Reverend Pearce immediatelyrecognized the need for an educationministry, as no provision had yet beenmade for the public education ofFlorida’s newly emancipated blacks.Assisted by the Reverend William G.Steward, the first AME pastor in the state,Pearce began to raise funds to build aschool. This school, established in 1866, was toeventually evolve into Edward WatersCollege. From the beginning, EWCwas faced with both abject povertyand widespread illiteracy among itsconstituents resulting from pre-warconditions of servitude and historical, legally enforced non-schooling of AfricanAmericans. However, the school metthe needs of its community by offeringcourses at the elementary, high school, college, and seminary levels.Construction of the first building beganin October 1872 on ten acres of landin Live Oak. Further support for thisnew educational institution came fromnumerous friends, including railroadEWC STRATEGIC PLAN2020(rev2/8/16).indd 3magnate General M.S. Littlefield,State Treasurer Simon Conaber , andLieutenant General William Gleason. In 1892 the school’s name was changedto Edward Waters College in honor ofthe third Bishop of the AME Church. In 1902 the City of Jacksonville wasdestroyed by fire and Edward WatersCollege was reduced to ashes. In 1904the Board of Trustees purchased thepresent site of the school on Kings Roadwith the imperative from Bishop M.B.Salter that Edward Waters College mustbe rebuilt.Under the continued visionary leadershipand direction of great Bishops of theAME Church and twenty-eight focusedpresidents, Edward Waters Collegewas indeed “rebuilt”. In February 2011,the Edward Waters College Board ofTrustees appointed Jacksonville nativeand alumnus Dr. Nathaniel Gloveras President. The processstarted with a review of the College Vision, Mission, Core Values and Goals whichwere determined to still be relevant. College Unit Managers provided feedbackregarding the objectives and implementation strategies needed to accomplish theinstitutional strategic goals while maintaining alignment with the Vision, Mission andValues of the College.During the process it was determined that many of the strategic objectives andimplementation strategies from the 2009-2014 plan were also still relevant andneeded to be folded into the new plan to ensure continuity. Each Goal is thereforesupported by a series of objectives and implementation strategies which have beenassigned to the various units in order to operationalize the institutional mission. This Strategic Plan is a living document designed to guide the College through thenext five years and is reflective of its title Aspire and Achieve: Beyond Boundaries. The College’s Board of Trustees has approved the plan thereby setting the priorityof work for the College over the next five years.2020Aspire and AchieveBeyond BoundariesEWC STRATEGIC PLAN2020(rev2/8/16).indd 52/16/16 1:39 PM
