Evaluating policy effectsquantitatively could help policymakers make informed decisions andbetter understand the costs and benefits of various policies. Zhoureceived a 2022 Hsien and Daisy Yen Wu Scholarship.Graduate School spotlightJoshua Garcia HorticultureHorticulture doctoral candidate Joshua Garcia studies how microbialconsortia in agricultural soils influence horticultural crop traits.Specifically, his emphasis is on plant-growth promoting microbialconsortia and the beneficial effects they have on crops. Rafid Bendimerad Aerospace EngineeringAerospace engineering doctoral student Rafid Bendimerad studieshigh-efficiency electric propulsion systems for small satellites. Hisresearch on electric propulsion has the potential to revolutionizespace exploration by ensuring the economy of fuel and a moresustainable system of propulsion. Bendimerad is a recipient of the2022 Africa Fund Fellowship.Graduate School spotlightSophia Veltfort English Language and LiteratureSophia Veltfort, M.F.A. ’20, a doctoral candidate in English languageand literature, studies representations of speech and thought in 20thcentury literature. Sai Pratyush Akula Mechanical EngineeringSai Pratyush Akula, a master’s student in mechanical engineering,studies additive manufacturing of biodegradable implants, in whichhe leverages 3D printing technology to design implants that willdegrade in the human body, eliminating the need for replacement orremoval in the future. His research intends to address common issuesthat exist with the current state of human implants.Graduate School spotlightSara Miller Geological SciencesGeological sciences doctoral student Sara Miller uses numericalmodeling to study oceans that exist on planetary bodies across thesolar system. These “ocean worlds” are key targets for spaceexploration in the search for life beyond Earth.
