ComposableInfrastructureA software-defined approachto delivering fluid pools ofresource

The article discusses: Evolution of IT architecture The emerging need and advantagesof Composable Infrastructure Creating a software-definedinfrastructure with Wipro’s FluidITframeworkIT infrastructure ecosystem has undergonemultiple transformations around parametersthat provide significant improvements throughoptimization of applications and operations. The infrastructure evolution started fromtraditional platforms to usage of virtualizationsoftware, and progressed to hyper-convergedinfrastructure. Hyper-converged infrastructurecombined with a virtualization softwaresimplified infrastructure and businessprocesses, increases IT division’s capability tonot only become more stable but also be aprofit center.2However, the combination of hyper-convergedinfrastructure and virtualization software isfalling short of the requirements of modern dayorganizations. The new generation oforganizations and applications lay downrequisites such as on-demand availability ofcustomized hardware resources and highoperational velocity. The combination ofhyper-converged infrastructure andvirtualization software is not capable offacilitating hardware modularity and on-demandmix and match of hardware resources.Additionally, IT approach has always beenfocused on minimizing costs, but this approachis not sufficient as the new generation oforganizations are also looking for highoperational velocity. IT needs to build the abilityto meet new business demands just-in-time.The new requirements call for not only aredesign of the physical layer but also aparadigm shift in age-old methodologies of buildand management. Composable Infrastructure(See Figure 1) creates the perfect ecosystem inwhich modern organizations can thrive.

With Composable Infrastructuresoftware-defined infrastructureecosystem can avoid bufferresource in different DatacenterIslands by having DynamicResource ManagementKey points for social copy Composable Infrastructure creates theperfect ecosystem in which modernorganizations can process new businessdemands just-in-time. Composable Infrastructure enables IT withthe flexibility to compose and re-composefluid pools of compute, storage, and networkresources, based on a given requirement. Composable Infrastructure consists ofmultiple resources including, but not limitedto, compute, storage and network that canmake an infrastructure highly flexible, capable and sufficient to run applications, sothat IT can deliver services quickly forconsumption by business. Why Composable Infrastructure?Composable Infrastructure helps IT to respondto the challenges laid down by neworganizations. It can be considered as the nextphase of hyper-converged infrastructure or thenext version of on-premise infrastructure.Composable Infrastructure consists of multipleresources including, but not limited to, compute, storage and network that can make aninfrastructure highly flexible, capable andsufficient to run applications, so that IT candeliver services quickly for consumption bybusiness. It eliminates the need forworkload‐specific environments therebyeliminating silos and provides a fluid set ofresources that can be dynamically combined tomeet the unique needs of any application.Composable Infrastructure enables bestapplication performance, reducesunderutilization and overprovisioning, andcreates a more agile and cost-effectivedatacenter. It enables IT to provisionon-premises infrastructure with the speed, agility and simplicity that is seen whiledeploying and provisioning resources on thecloud.Composable Infrastructure enables IT with theflexibility to compose and re-compose fluidpools of compute, storage, and networkresources, based on a given requirement.Additionally, unified APIs fully automate thecomposition and decomposition of resources, and enables programming of a significantnumber of infrastructure elements. ComposableInfrastructure brings an integratedsoftware-defined intelligence that includesself-discovery, auto-integrate, provision andscale out. This intelligence is achieved byimplementing a software-defined approachtowards lifecycle management of physicalinfrastructure. Composable infrastructure hasthree components - Composable Compute,Composable Fabric, and Composable Storage(Shown in Figure 2).Fluid pools of compute storage, and network resources, which can becomposed and re-composed based on the requirementComputeComposable Architecture that enablesspecified system to be composed on the flyWorkload AStorageWorkload BAcceleratorsFigure 2: Components of Composable Infrastructure4

This in turn results in lowering ofcosts, improvement of staff productivity andfacilitates users with the capability to provisionsystem and services from a single platform.Benefit spans across multiple directions (SeeFigure 4).Composable Infrastructure provides a solid, yetflexible foundation of resources.Increase automationTake controlOne platformEasy maintenanceQuick deploymentGain efficiencyLower costsSpeedProductivityBetter use of resourcesLess timeFewer problemsIncreased productivityFigure 4: Benefits of Wipro’s FluidIT framework6StablePredictableManageable

Conclusion:Composable Infrastructure operates at the coreof Wipro’s FluidIT Framework. It supportsWipro’s FluidIT architecture by delivering fluidresource pools that reduce operationalcomplexity for traditional workloads andincreases operational velocity for next-genapplications and services. Composableinfrastructure facilitates dynamic configurationand customizations as per workloadrequirements. The result is effortlessconfiguration and reconfiguration ofComposable Infrastructure withsoftware-defined intelligence powered byASPIRE and Service Theater that result inefficient utilizations and reduced time tomarket.About the authorsSreenath MPractice Manager, Cloud InfrastructureServices, WiproSreenath has over 13 years’ experience inSolution Designing and Technical Delivery atWipro.
