The course aims to develop analytical and presentation skills for use in the urban design studio by exploring everyday urban spaces. The objectives are: To learn representation of the city through sketching, drawing / mapping using digital tools (GIS etc.) and other tools of representation, including film, photography by exploring the use of post apartheid divided city space. To illustrate how everyday “in-between” spaces and ways of inhabiting space can facilitate social activation and movement in space. The course is about reviewing the typology of cities and urban design through theory and case studies. It aims to investigate the value of city design through considering performance at a local neighbourhood area / precinct scale. It is a course combined with Landscape Architecture, Planning and Urban Design students. Urban Design Studio PART B is conducted in the second term. It is a course combined with Landscape Architecture and Urban Design students. The overarching aims of the term is to introduce the complimentary and conflict dimensions of design, while, simultaneously, exposing the students to values of democratic planning and design processes. The studio also offers ways of unpacking value systems that disrupt and transform dominant - but often entrenched - ways of ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’ in the built environment. The studio will expose the students to various ‘design thinking’ and place-making tools for the purpose of engaging with creative urban form responses. The students will learn how to engage with the process of urbanism through exploring principles, ideas, models and precedent, and how to use these to guide action. Ideally this studio is based in a context “outside of the metro”, preferable in an African City - this is to be determined based on the funding and availability of time and resources by students. A local context will be developed if an international city is not possible. CONFLICTING SPACES DESIGNING URBAN PLACES. APG 5084F: UD Research Methods 5-day MODULE: Research Methods COURSE OUTLINE: 20 credits, NQF 9 The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to develop a research proposal for the Urban Design Research Project (UDRP) (SEMESTER 2), or final project as part of the MUD. This research proposal developed will include: A clear statement of the research questions, aims, rationale, including context, background information that will guide the UDRP - upfront engagement and research will be important prior to the mid-term break; An overview of literature and the theoretical framework for the UDRP; Methodologies to be used for the UDRP; Explanation and connection to relevance of the topic relative to urban design; A draft bibliography; A clear timetable for your research; Completion of the required UCT ethics forms. What makes a good research question? . link to theory, precedent or practical examples, context specific, city design. APG 5086S: UD Research Project SEMESTER 2: Urban Design Research Project (UDRP) COURSE OUTLINE: 60 Credits, NQF 9 Urban Design Research Project is conducted in the second semester. The aim of the research project is to develop and demonstrate integrated research ad urban design skills; identify and address a well-defined urban design issue or question in the context of a site; develop an ability to analyse design orientated research findings according to explicit criteria; and to present and support an urban design response to the issue/question raised through appropriate methods of Urban Design inquiry and representation. The Research Project must be original, rigorous and make a strategic contribution to the discipline of urban design locally and in South Africa / internationally.
