Presidents Message.John G. Mills 2008 Tolman Family Members, The Salt of Earth At the beginning of yet another year, I wish each of you a prosperous year all year long. I've felt a sense of deep gratitude for those fine members of the Thomas Tolman Family Organization who have participated in one way or another to support this great organization and its worthy goals. I appreciate the time and means spent to reach out to find our lost family members both among the living and the dead. Many of you have contributed in a variety of ways, either through the payment of family dues, working on research projects, preserving photos and histories of our ancestors, maintaining and verifying information of our living family members, having family gatherings and reunions large and small, strengthening family ties with your own immediate family members, and the service so many of you have rendered in temple service. I have recently been drawn to studying the 15th chapter of Luke. In this chapter the Master introduces three parables to answer the Sadducees and Pharisees who were finding fault regarding how the master could lower himself to eat with sinners and publicans. The three parables are the parable of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the prodigal son. Of course, each of these parables has great application to each of us in so many different ways. It is in the second, the parable of the lost coin, that has made me think of our responsibilities as members of the Thomas Tolman Family. In Luke 15:8-10 we read "Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbors together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth." According to Robert L. Millet in his book, Lost and Found, Reflections on The Prodigal Son, "Here a precious item is lost because of neglect of the owner." "This too is a parable of chastisement, an accusation against those who see themselves as perpetually faithful." "It isn’t' something she (the woman) planned to do; unfortunately the coin was misplaced. In the same way, a brother or sister may be lost through our neglect." (pp. 23-24) David O. McKay said, "Our charge is not only coins, but also the living souls of children, youth, and adults (McKay, Gospel Ideals, 536-37)." Those of you who have contributed so much to your families, both the living and the dead, have not neglected or lost the coins, but rather have your purses full and secure. Thanks for what you have done in the past, and we need your help now to make this year even more profitable for you, your family, and the Thomas Tolman Family Organization. May the Lord bless you, John Mills President Tolman Family Newsletter January 2008 Page 3

Family Genealogist Message.Loriane T. Pace 2008 Loraine Tolman Pace 435 East 900 North, Logan, Utah 84321 (435) 753-6154 thimbles 4@msn.com Dear Family Members, Every once in a while at Christmas time I think about sitting on Santa’s lap and asking him if he will grant me a few of the genealogical wishes I have. For instance: (1) I wish every member of the family would understand the value of an organization such as ours. Some of us have recently had the privilege of viewing the 1978 dedication services of our Genealogy Center in Bountiful. The Center is such a unique possession which came as a result of an even more unique dedication and sacrifice. I hope the next generations will value it as much as those of us do, whose parents toiled and sweat to bring about its existence. Without a repository for family records, the records often end up lost, destroyed or becoming the personal possession of a family genealogist. (2) I wish every member of our family would recognize the importance of depositing a copy of their records at the family center. Every day on the news we have stories of deaths, fires and other circumstances that result in the loss of records. It is a great safeguard to have copies of your records housed outside your own home. (3) I wish every married family unit would feel the necessity of contributing their annual dues to our family organization. Research can be costly in both time and money. The dues assist us in covering the costs incurred for postage, travel, copying and compiling the records. You can’t find a better investment, either temporally or spiritually, for a mere 25. (4) I wish the members of the family would catch the Spirit of Elijah and help with the research. I have to smile at those who tell me that their family genealogy is done. I occasionally hear that statement in our family. Believe me, there is more than enough work left for those who want to be involved in the salvation of our dead and earn that salvation for themselves. 2007 FAMILY ACQUISITIONS: *Journals of Benjamin Hewitt Tolman II, copied and typed by Alice Tolman Lamborn, Valmai Tolman Vaughn, Dawn Tolman Mills and Dawnine T. NEW WEB MASTER: At our October Semi-annual meeting Trent Larson was sustained as our new web master with plans to make some changes and additions to our website and give us greater accessibility of family data and keep us all apprised with what is happening in our research. Look for some exciting additions in the near future! Trent is the son of Norman Ross and Sharon Lee Gould Larson, grandson of Ross Tolman and Elinora Noble Larson, ggson of Frederick William and Mary Alice Tolman Larson, 2ggs of Joshua Alvin and Mary Jane Gorringe Tolman and 3ggs of Cyrus and Alice Bracken Tolman. We express our heartfelt thanks to Robert Tolman, who has served as our web master over the past several years and blessed us with his talents. HIGHLIGHTS OF 2007 FAMILY RESEARCH: Since September of this year we have added to the Ancestor Data Base 1,260 names, bringing the total to 59,297. The Nathan Data Base has had 84 names added for a total of 59,897, giving us a grand total of 119,194 names on the Thomas Tolman data base. Our research emphasis has been on several end-of-line@ ancestors to try and verify their parents. We are meeting with some success and will update you as those connections are verified. HISTORY OF JUDSON TOLMAN: Sometime during 2008 we will need to publish a third edition of Judson Tolman’s History since we only have four or five copies left of the second edition. As mentioned before, we are adding biographical sketches of his twenty children who lived to maturity. The additional pages could raise the cost of the third edition from 25 to 28- 30, depending on the number we print. We need to have a rough estimate of how many copies to print and would like you to indicate any interest you have by filling in and returning the following form. We could also provide the additions to Judson’s history as a separate addendum that you could place in your current copy of his history, or perhaps as a PDF file you could download and print off at your convenience. We will know more as we move ahead into these additions. - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I would like to pre-order copies of the 3rd Edition of Judson Tolman’s history to include biographical sketches of his children. Benjamin History Publications Orders: 2008 Over the years the journals of Benjamin Hewitt Tolman II were in the possession of several different family members. In the early 1960’s, the original journals were loaned to the Office of the Church Historian for microfilming. The journals were later donated permanently to the Office of the Church Historian. During the last two years, Dawn Tolman Mills, Ila Tolman Jensen, Alice Tolman Lamborn and Valmai Tolman Vaughan, granddaughters of Benjamin Hewitt Tolman II, traveled to the Church Historian's Office in Salt Lake City in order to purchase copies of the microfilmed pages of their grandfather's journals with the idea of writing a history of his life. They were allowed to order only 100 pages each at a time, so it took a few trips. It was decided that the journals would be typed for easier reading. We are so grateful for the effort made by Benjamin Hewitt Tolman II’s posterity to provide this volume for current and future generations. Many hours of typing and proofreading were rendered, demonstrating what is truly a labor of love. We are planning to print these journals and offer them for sale within the next two months. To help us know how many copies to print, we need you to please fill out the Pre-Order Form below. ---------Pre-Order Form Mail to: Thomas Tolman Organization, 2937 So Orchard Drive, Bountiful, UT 84010 I would like to order Volumes @ 27.50 each ( 25.00 2.50 mailing) Check enclosed Visa Card Expiration Name: Address: City State Zip Code Telephone Number: Tolman Family Newsletter January 2008 Page 7

More Family Happenings . 2008 Deaths Jana Kaye Tolman Fife Jana Kaye Tolman Fife God, Family & Friends Others may have plaques, trophies and worldly acclaim, but Jana has the names of those that she loved and those that loved her etched in her heart. After years of showing us how to gracefully and beautifully make the best of life's trials, Jana passed away on Monday, December 24, 2007. Throughout life, Jana thanked her Heavenly Father for all of her blessings - even the MS that made her life so challenging. Service was Jana's life. She loved and served her beautiful children. All five of Jana's children served missions: Morgan in Argentina, Megan in Oregon, Dustin in Ukraine, and Zach and Sausha in Taiwan. Jana taught each of them obedience and faithfulness, and instilled in her children a love of the Savior. In spite of her pain and health challenges, Jana continued to serve, as is evidenced by the many that love her. Primary was an integral part of that service. Whatever she did in life she did it with all of her strength and energy. As a primary chorister, she would spend as much as twenty hours in a week preparing for Sunday. There was no doubt about her love for the Primary children or their love for her. The family would like to thank all of those that helped our mom throughout the years, including the Crosswinds Second Ward, Community Nursing Services, the Spanish Fork Clinic, and, especially, Dr. Frandsen. Jana loved and appreciated each of you, and often tried to return your service. Jana is survived by her husband, Rod; her children: Morgan (Jennie), Megan (Stephen) Miller, Zachary (Meredith), Dustin (Sloane), and Sausha; her grandchildren, Dashiel, Myles, and Royal; her parents, Judson and Darla Tolman; and her siblings: Rod (Virginia) Tolman, Debi (Gary) Jensen, Craig (Julie) Tolman, Cynthia (Don) Williams, Shawn (Melinda) Tolman, Sue (David) Hannah, Yeng Lao, and Chia (Alex) Johnson. Funeral services will be held on December 31, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at 1167 South 1700 East, Spanish Fork, Utah, in the Crosswinds Second Ward chapel. A viewing will be held at the Crosswinds Second Ward Chapel on Sunday, December 30, 2007, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., and on Monday, December 31, 2007, from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
