Practical Elliott Wave Trade Strategies Course Robert Miner, President, Dynamic Traders Group DynamicTraders.com Chapter 6 Support Material Subdivisions of Trends and Counter Trends In Chapter 6 you learned Subdivisions are the smaller time frame of each trend or counter trend section. They are also called the smaller degree. Sections in the direction of the trend or counter trend should subdivide into five waves. Sections that are against the direction of the trend or counter trend should subdivide into three waves or a complex correction of overlapping sections or a series of three wave sections or into five overlapping sections. Subdivisions of a section may not easily be identified but it is usually fairly obvious if they are impulsive or corrective. If we can identify the sections of the smaller time frame, it will help us to identify the reversal of the larger time frame much earlier than if we cannot identify the subdivisions. Practical Elliott Wave Trade Strategy Course Chapter 6 Support Material – Subdivisions of Trends and Counter Trends Subdivisions of a Five Wave Impulse Trend A key characteristic of an impulse trend is the waves do not overlap before the impulse trend is complete. 1. Waves 1, 3, and 5 of a 5 Wave Impulse trend are the trend waves (move in the direction of the five wave trend). Each should subdivide into five, non-overlapping waves with one exception which is when the Wave 5 is an Ending Diagonal. 2. Waves 2 and 4 of a 5 Wave Impulse trend are counter trend waves (move against the direction of the five wave trend). Each should subdivide into a 3 Wave, ABC or complex correction. ABC corrections are more common than complex corrections. A Complex Correction may take many forms. Subdivisions of a Three Wave Counter Trend A key characteristic of a correction is it should never be a five wave, non-overlapping impulse trend. 1. Wave A of an ABC may subdivide into 5 or 3 waves but usually subdivides into five waves. 2. Wave A may subdivide into three waves. If there is a 3 Wave, ABC that does not reach the typical Wave C price target zone, then it is probably an ABC-three wave, Wave A. More about this in the End of Wave (EOW) price target zones course. Practical Elliott Wave Trade Strategy Course Chapter 6 Support Material – Subdivisions of Trends and Counter Trends 3. Wave B of an ABC is a counter trend to the counter trend or a correction within a larger time frame correction. W.B should subdivide into an ABC or complex counter trend. A three section ABC is the more common. 4. Wave C of an ABC should always subdivide into five waves, either a five wave, non-overlapping impulse trend or an Five Wave Ending Diagonal which is not common. . Subdivisions of a Complex Counter Trend A complex counter trend is any correction other than a three section ABC. It may take many forms and how the sections within the complex correction subdivide should give a strong indication is a complex correction is in a position to be complete or not. 1. Each section in the direction of the counter trend should subdivide into five waves. Those sections in the direction of the higher time frame counter trend are trend sections, usually five wave, non-overlapping impulse trends themselves. 2. Each section against the counter trend direction should subdivide into three or more waves. These sections are corrections against a higher time frame section. 3. The last section of a complex correction should subdivide into five waves. This is a key to identifying is the market is in a position to complete a complex correction. Copyright 2021, Robert C. It is a five wave trend but unlike a five wave impulse trend, the Wave 4 overlaps with the Wave 1. Ending Diagonals are the last section (“ending”) of a trend or counter trend. The most common is a Wave 5 Ending Diagonal. It is a higher time frame Wave 5 trend wave that reaches new extremes and the Wave 3:5 is beyond the extreme of the W.1:5 and the W.5:5 is beyond the extreme of the W.3:5. 1. Unlike a five wave impulse trend, Waves 1, 3 and 5 of an Ending Diagonal usually subdivide into three waves. However, contrary to the rules of academic Elliott Wave, they may subdivide into five waves. 2. Waves 2 and 4 of an Ending Diagonal usually sub-divide into three waves, but may subdivide into a complex correction. They should never subdivide into a five wave, non-overlapping impulse trend. Wave a and Wave c are constructed of five waves as Elliott originally proposed. As opposed to the five wave impulse move in Elliott’s original version that could form either a Wave 1, Wave 3, Wave 5, Wave A or Wave C the harmonic version can only f

So, the wave 1, wave 3 and wave 5 are parts of impulsive wave in upward direction. [6] Though Elliott waves follow many rules but three basic rules are followed by each wave to interpret Elliott wave. These guidelines are unbreakable. These rules are as follow: Rule 1: Wave 2 is not retracted more than 100% of wave 1.

Elliott wave triangle waves usually occur in the position of wave B or wave 4 of the larger pattern. A triangle wave is usually the penultimate move in the larger Elliott wave pattern and leads to an explosive move back into the larger trend. Contracting triangle The contracting triangle is a horizontal contraction in range of the price.

Because of that, an Elliott Wave cycle shows a five-waves market decline or advance, corrected by the other three waves. To count an impulsive wave, Elliott used numbers and he used letters for a corrective wave. As such, a bullish or bearish cycle has a 1-2-3-4-5- a-b-c count. These eight waves form the Elliott Wave Principle key to market behavior.

Applying Elliott Wave theory is the study of the stock markets price data in the search for recognisable patterns in the behavior of the markets prices. These price patterns can enable an Elliott Wave analyst to assess whether prices are likely to rise or fall - ahead of the event. Elliott Wave Theory - an Invaluable Tool for Successful Trading
