VIVISUN LEDThe Complete SwitchPhoto: Courtesy of LockheedMartin Missile and Fire ControlDesign engineers in today’s aerospaceindustry are faced with the challenge ofdesigning performance oriented avionic systems with high reliability. In pursuit of thisgoal they have wanted to design out low reliability, failure prone incandescent lighting infavor of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting which has the advantage of high reliability. However, they had previously foundthat in using LEDs they had to sacrifice quality lighting and had to employ complex pulsewidth modulation techniques for uniformlow level dimming. Aerospace Optics hasresponded to this need by developing a product to help these design engineers with theirneed for quality lighting, high reliability andsimple voltage-controlled dimming in lightedpushbutton switches.VIVISUN LEDThe VIVISUN LED is an LED lightedpushbutton switch that combines the excellent sunlight readability our customersexpect from VIVISUN products with thehigh reliability afforded by LEDs. This product was developed to solve the problemsfaced by our customers who have wantedLED reliability but have been unable to getLED reliability with high quality lighting. The VIVISUN LED high performancelighting provides sunlight readability exceeding the requirements of MIL-PRF-22885F,compliance with the NVIS requirements ofMIL-L-85762A, voltage dimming andimpressive uniformity and viewing angle. These advanced technology switches andindicators are setting new industry standardsfor LED lighting and these innovativeswitches are available only from AerospaceOptics, the technical leader in sunlight readable switches and indicators.Aerospace Optics, Inc.3201 Sandy Lane, Fort Worth, Texas, 76112VIVISUN LED in Multifunction DisplaysElectronic multifunction displays are beingused in ground vehicles, on shipboard and inaircraft glass cockpits to display more andmore instrumentation and control information. This has caused a reduction in therequired numbers of individual pushbuttonswitches and indicators. However, there aremany applications where lighted pushbuttonswitches are used to enhance electronic displays as shown in the photo above. In manycases these switches need a higher level ofreliability and can be upgraded to VIVISUNLED switches which offer the highest reliability, lowest maintenance and best sunlightreadability available. The VIVISUN LED AdvantageLighted pushbutton switches and indicators have customarily used incandescentlamps to achieve high brightness and sunlight readability. Since the lighting is produced by the heating of a lamp filamentwhose radiant emissions are primarily heat, there are many problems resulting in lowreliability. This leads to high failure rates forincandescent lamps requiring constantrelamping resulting in high maintenancethroughout the service life of the aircraft. In contrast, reliability has been the advantage for LEDs making them highly desirableand serving as the answer to low reliabilitylamps. However, previous LED lighting hasbeen a big disappointment because of itsfailure to provide good lighting for sunlightreadability, uniformity, viewing angle andcould only be dimmed uniformly using pulsewidth modulation. So, in spite of all theproblems, incandescent lamps have continued to be used because of the need for highbrightness and simple voltage dimming. The VIVISUN LED lighting advantage isthat it eliminates the problems caused byincandescent lamps and it also solves theproblems associated with LED lighting. TheVIVISUN LED lighting completely obsoletes incandescent lighting and truly fulfillsthe expectations for reliable LED lighting. The VIVISUN LED is the low power, highreliability solution to sunlight readable, NVIScompliant lighted pushbutton switches andindicators. The VIVISUN LED lighting eliminatesthe incandescent problems of high powerconsumption, high heat generation and hightouch temperature by producing a brightnessequivalent to incandescent while using lessthan half as much power. The poor reliability and high maintenance relamping problemsassociated with incandescent lamps are eliminated by using highly reliable, long lifeLEDs in a fault tolerant circuit design. LEDsare not susceptible to shock and vibrationfailures and do not have the high inrush current that incandescent lamps experiencewhen energized. The VIVISUN LED lighting eliminates all of the incandescent lampproblems and still has high brightness, sunlight readability, viewing angle, uniformity, excellent color separation and is uniformlydimmable with voltage-controlled dimming.Listed on QPL 22885, ISO 9001 RegisteredThe VIVISUN LED lighted pushbuttonswitches are fully qualified to MIL-PRF22885/108 and listed on the QualifiedProducts List (QPL) 22885. Our QualityAssurance System is ISO 9001 registered andour test lab is DSCC certified. AerospaceOptics is committed to manufacturing highquality products and to ensuring total customer satisfaction by providing outstandingcustomer service and defect-free productswith exceptional delivery and product value.Data Sheet No. 12-2001-04 Rev. VIVISUN Sunlight Readable and Non-GhostingIn complex glass cockpits, the workloadand demand on the pilot is extensive and thepossibility of misinterpreted annunciators cannot be tolerated. This has placed the sunlightreadability of LED lighted switches and indicators at the highest priority. VIVISUN LEDswitches and indicators meet these requirements head on, providing unconditional sunlight readability even in the most demandingdirect sunlight conditions.VIVISUN LED lighted pushbuttonswitches and indicators are certified to meetthe strict MIL-PRF-22885F requirements forsunlight readability. All VIVISUN LED standard colors have on to background contrastsgreater than or equal to 0.6 in an ambient illumination of 10,000 foot-candles. This contrastis also certified for all glare producing anglesup to and including 15 .Another area of tremendous pilot concernis the possibility of “Ghost Legends” fromunenergized displays. Direct sunlight can causea false image to be reflected from an unlighteddisplay, thus causing possible confusion andmisinterpretation. The VIVISUN LED displays remain blacked out or “Dead Faced”when not energized and meet the MIL-PRF22885F unlighted contrast requirement not toexceed the absolute value of 0.1 in an ambientillumination of 10,000 foot-candles.DeadFaceSunlightReadableSpecifiying VIVISUN LED means combining unrivaled sunlight readability with the cool, reliable, low power operation of LEDs.NVIS Compliant and Sunlight ReadableNighttime operations are now an integralpart of military strategy. These operationshave presented many new challenges, includingthe requirment to safely navigate and selectground targets using only the availablestarlight. To accomplish these objectives, crewmembers wear Night Vision Imaging System(NVIS) goggles which greatly enhance andmultiply the effects of starlight. VIVISUNLED switches and indicators are ready to meetthese new challenges by providing advancedcockpit lighting that is both NVIS compatibleand sunlight readable.Conventional lighted switches and indicators cannot be used in an aircraft involved innighttime operations because they are notcompatible with the NVIS goggles. Light fromthese incompatible displays will be greatly multiplied and interfere with the normal operationof the NVIS goggles. This interferencedegrades the sensitivity of the NVIS goggles, making them no longer capable of starlightoperations. To address the issue of NVIScompatibility, MIL-L-85762A, “Lighting,Aircraft, Interior, Night Vision ImagingSystem (NVIS) Compatible,” was written todefine the requirements for all aircraft lightingthat is to be used with the NVIS goggles. To make displays compliant with theMIL-L-85762A requirements, sophisticatedfiltering must be used. Improperly designed fil-Aerospace Optics, Inc.3201 Sandy Lane, Fort Worth, Texas, 76112LEDThe Complete Switchters can lead to a reduction in the brightnessand sunlight contrast of the display. TheVIVISUN LED provides NVIS compliantlighting without sacrificing sunlight readability.MIL-L-85762A is no longer an active specification and in some cases is being replaced byMIL-STD-3009. Still, MIL-L-85762A is thesource for the NVIS compliance requirementsthat are restated as guidelines in the AircraftLighting Handbook, JSSG-2010-5 and theInterface Document ASC/ENFC 96-01.VIVISUN LED switches are certified to meetthe color, NVIS radiance and the minimum 0.4lighted contrast requirements stated in thesource document, MIL-L-85762A and MILSTD-3009.Wide Viewing AngleThe VIVISUN LED can be viewed clearly throughout a wide 60 cone, even when it isoperated in direct sunlight.Low Power ConsumptionThe high efficiency VIVISUN LED typically consumes only 1.18 watts at 28 volts, lessthan half the power of a typical 2.69 wattincandescent switch or indicator. VIVISUNLED switches and indicators also do not havethe high inrush current of incandescent lampswhich can be ten times the steady state current.Low Touch TemperatureLess than one third of the energy emittedby an incandescent lamp is visible to the eye.The remaining two thirds is radiated as heatwhich can cause a significant rise in the facecap temperature. The face cap temperature caneven reach a level that can cause pain or injuryif touched without gloves. The VIVISUN LED uses low power, solidstate lighting that emits far more light thanheat. This significantly lowers the face captemperature compared to similar incandescentswitches and indicators. In normal operation, the face cap temperature is only 48 C, whichis barely perceptible to the touch.Wide Operating Temperature RangeHigh performance military systems areexpected to operate properly in a wide varietyof climatic conditions. This is why the VIVISUN LED was designed and tested for operation from -40 C to 71 C.High ReliabilityIncandescent lamps used in lighted pushbutton switches and indicators are troublesome. Extensive research into the nature oflamp failures revealed numerous factors affecting lamp life. These factors include temperature, voltage, frequent on/off cycling and thevibration that is typical of high performanceaircraft. Individually, these factors are significant but when combined the result is oftenunacceptably low lamp life. The solid state circuitry used in the VIVISUN LED incorporates advanced design features for high reliabilty and low drive current. These advanced features result in a pushbutton cap calculated reliability per MIL-HDBK217F, Notice 2 in excess of 125,000 hours. Thedesign of the VIVISUN LED even includesfault tolerance to keep the display readableeven if an LED failure should occur.Single Common or Horizontally SplitCommonsThe standard VIVISUN LED providesfour power inputs, one for each of the displayquadrants and a single common shared by allfour. The horizontal split common option provides two commons, one for the upper andone for the lower half of the display.LED PolarityLEDs are PN junction semiconductorsthat are inherently sensitive to polarity. TheVIVISUN LED is available in either CommonCathode (positive seeking) or Common Anode(negative seeking) configurations, each havingreverse polarity protection.Reduced Number of Input WiresMany lighted switches require connectingas many as six wires to illuminate the entiredisplay which can increase wiring complexityand aircraft weight. The VIVISUN LEDreduces the number of input wires by offeringoptional interconnections between displayquadrants. For single legend displays, this feature means that the entire display can be illuminated with only two wires reducing wiringcomplexity and aircraft weight.11 Sunlight Readable ColorsThe VIVISUN LED is available in elevensunlight readable colors. The sunlight readablelegends are Type S per MIL-PRF-22885F andare dead faced in direct sunlight and fully sunlight readable when energized. Colors availableare blue, green, white, yellow and red as standard colors and NVIS blue, NVIS green A,NVIS green B, NVIS white, NVIS yellow andNVIS red for use with the NVIS goggles.Data Sheet No. 12-2001-04 Rev. VIVISUN TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONSMeasurement and Certification ofSunlight ReadabilityAll Aerospace Optics VIVISUN LEDdisplays are readable in direct sunlight.Certification of sunlight readability is performed by photometrically determining thecontrast for each legend by using the specular reflectance test method outlined in MILPRF-22885F, paragraph 4.7.36.The test method uses a light source of3000 K to 5000 K which is first placed at a 15 angle of incidence to a white bariumsulfate standard. A photometer is placed at a-15 angle of reflection to the barium sulfatestandard. The light source is used to illuminate the barium sulfate so as to produce10,000 foot-candles as measured by the photometer. The barium sulfate standard is thenreplaced by the viewing surface of the display, keeping the same incident and reflective angles of both the light source and thephotometer (see Figure A).Using this test configuration the luminance of the legend, both illuminated andnonilluminated, plus that of the adjacentbackground area are measured when subjected to 10,000 foot-candles of illumination. Three luminance readings per character are taken. These measurements are thenused to calculate the average contrast foreach character. The contrast is calculatedfrom the following equations:ON/BACKGROUND contrast C L OFF/BACKGROUND contrast CUL B2 - B1B1B3 - B1B1where:C L Lighted legend contrastC UL Unlighted legend contrastB1 Average background luminanceB2 Average character luminance, lightedB3 Average character luminance, unlightedE Light SourceP PhotometerReflectance Standard(Replaced by viewingsurface of display afteradjustment of light)Figure AAfter the 15 contrast data has been collected, the test is then repeated using a 30 angle of incidenc

The VIVISUN LED lighting advantage is that it eliminates the problems caused by incandescent lamps and it also solves the problems associated with LED lighting. The VIVISUN LED lighting completely obso-letes incandescent lighting and truly fulfills the expectations for reli
